Still in it.

[censored] these umps

Good quarter Dees. Just need to stop bombing it high in the hope Gawn magically appears on the wing.

No

HP not doing as well as I thought he would.

Needs to either jump early or really late with a knee. I’ll say it again, Draper does not protect himself very well.

Or what Grundy did opening round, charge forward and have a side by side contest but take away Drapers jump

Anyone claiming that Max's ruck work isn't very good need look no further than how ineffective Petty is as a ruck.

Getting a bath by Draper

Who is claiming that? Is that an obscure reference to the debrief podcast and that local footy "ruck expert" Scotty bemoaning max tapping it to the opposition?

Gawns problem is tapping, or our midfielders are always misplaced

WTF CLARRY ON THE GROUND FOR 1/3 OFTHE QUARTER?? UR KIDDING GOODWIN??

Why do the pessimist go quiet when we score? They need a bit of balance.

Perhaps they are in the camp of "I told you so".

Two in a row, Go Dees!

This is far from over.

We're letting them overpasses the ball

Need to stop the outlet kick

Better end to the qtr. We look like we’re always on the precipice here though because we’re not manning up and happy to give them so much possession. We have to clean up our inside 50 entries, foot skills in general, and making sure that we hold them accountable and maintain intensity.

Goal from Disco was awesome, and that 50 against Kozzie was diabolical.

Need more pressure on their midfielders, they've got too much time, creating overlap too easily

And at least try to break even in the ruck contests. Petty getting pushed around like a rag doll so far

Because our mids are working overtime for the pathetic performance is dishing up in the ruck.

Oliver is just a shadow of his old form.

On for about 13 minutes WTF

Rivers could be a midfield star

not bad for pick 27!

If it continues to rain I think we’ll win. Dons playing too much of a dry ball game.

Bloody umpires so inconsistent. Kozzy pinged for 50 with no warning to come back onto the mark, Melk about send into forward 50, Essendrug player called to stand and moves off mark and nothing is called. Ended in goal anyway luckily.

FCS what were you expecting? He has put his hand up.

If Rivers can tighten up his disposal a bit he will be bog.

We are still in this.

I don't know how.

Pickett our best.

Not good enough!

these umpires are really pissing me off with there inconsistency. kozie is getting pinged for everything under the sun. And essendon players doing the same thing nothing. just before kozies last goal the man on the mark was told to stand and he continued to move and nothing. it worked out ok but where is the constency. I dont know how many essendon and even some melbourne players have been stripped of the ball but kozie gets pinged. The essendon backs are pushing our forwards fair square in the back time and time again and marking the ball and thats ok by the umpires. i think roo was deliberately blocked in going for a mark and nothing. we have played some decent football but we have let these guys have too many players on their own especially in their forward line. need to tighten up and man up.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
