What did he have to say?

From 13:03 of this link:

https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/best-of-abc-sport-podcast/lingy-the-legend-will-may-be-fined-for-staging-/104012664

Key points:

  • 'Look at the results this weekend' - it's a tough comp
  • Focus when Roos were closing in - addressing some of the poor posture and body language in last couple of games
  • If you look at the vision 'id hope you'd see' some improvement in that space
  • 'They got within a kick with 4 mins to go (actually was 4:35), we were able to hold up in the last 4 mins' - good 'defensive actions'
  • The Roos attacked and we were looking to 'score too much' in the last
  • The Roos 'brought a couple of numbers to stoppages late' which we 'probably didn't react quick enough' to
  • Clayton has been playing a defensive midfield role this season - 'people don't see that', but he has been 'playing a completely different role'  which frees up other mids and explains his drop in possessions
  • He was freed up to be more attacking this week, but got tagged
  • Handled it ok after the first 15-20 mins
  • Clarry tried to go to Davis Uniake, freed up Jack to play his game
  • Clarry working super hard and hopefully will get back to his best 'in the next few weeks'
  • Next week's game - 'i left last night really, really pumped' to play Brisbane
  • 'I'm really pumped' for Friday night (he said this twice)
  • We have a rivalry with the Lions
  • He's 'set it up so well, Goody, that i think we are going to see a strong effort from our club up there'
  • 'I can get a bit too personal' in terms of focusing on his ruck battles
  • Winning clearances critical at the GABBA
  • Not 'concerned' about our forward line
  • Still haven't seen Tracc - still in isolation
  • Where do you see this group in terms of playing your best footy in the back half of the years?:
  • Love to be where the Swans are but 'we've been there, in 2022 we were 11 zip and went out in straight sets'
  • Its all about being in form in the right part of the year, referencing the Blues and Giants last year as examples of teams hitting form at 'the right part of the year'
  • Excited to try to get there - 'not there yet, but hopefully with a couple of little tweaks and we keep smacking in on the contest and our defence side of our brand and hopefully get there by the back half of the year'

Why Goodwin would even play Oliver as a defensive mid, when clearly we have Viney and Sparrow to play that role. We have clearly struggled in the midfield as well this year. Also, Oliver is one of the best mids of this generation and considering we have had to play Petracca forward (and now injured), it’s Oliver who should be taking games by the scruff of the neck. Just odd coaching imo. Actually I call bs.

Yeah I'm genuinely perplexed at this.

This coaching group never cease to amazing me of late with some of the more bizarre coaching decisions they pull out of their backside.

I actually don’t believe it tbh, just an excuse for poor form and attitude IMO.

It's no defensive in terms of tagging or not hunting the ball, but more so in terms of positioning they've asked 1 midfielder most of the time to hold out from forward 50 stoppages and to set up in general player closer to the backs in more of a sweeping role.

Collingwood do it with Pendles. Richmond did it with Cotchin. The point is you have an extra defensive sided player if you turn the ball over (taking more risk going forward) and you have someone in the corridor ready to counter when you do win the ball back.

It wasn't going to be Tracc, it wasn't going to be Viney (has been at times but generally he's better with the freedom to follow the ball).

It's been Salem at times and was Rivers on the weekend which is more logical. But if we don't have a defender spare because Howes isn't trusted or injuries it's reasonable to use Clarry - particularly from the big 3. Saves his legs a bit too. And sets him up to charge the ball back the other way which has always been his greatest strength along with winning the ball.

Almost all the moves the coaches have made this year can be explained by the lack of any kind of options and the adjustment to a new game plan that will ask different things from different players.

Good explanation. It also highlights how much we miss Gus and his role.

Classic case of "Damned if you do and damned if you don't".

Posters bemoan that "stubborn" Goodwin won't try new things but, when he does, he gets potted for doing so.

Come on D, we need something to moan about. What would DL be like if we couldn’t moan, groan and complain?

Very true. He's so stubborn but a total nitwit for changing the gameplan this year. You'd think he wanted to evolve or something.

@DeeSpencer also explains above why it was hardly shocking. And given Viney played his best game in weeks/months, some part of it worked well.

Sadly DJR a Lot on here seem to miss that point. it is not as though he was a average player who is now gone. he was vital to our team. if anyone doesn't  appreciate  this just watch the GF win again.

I totally agree. It is so sad to lose a player / teammate of that calibre in the prime of his career. As you have said, he was an integral part of not only our midfield but also our overall game plan. I feel certain that Gus would have been earmarked for that key midfield defensive role that Max spoke about.

Without it we would've lost the game, pleasingly and sadly at the same time.

According to expected score, we should have lost ....

PS.  whatever!
