POSTGAME: Rd 12 vs Fremantle

We have a better list than most of the top 8 sides. We came into this season with the best defense in the league over the last 4 years, and a midfield with like 10 AA jackets, two coaches awards, and a Norm Smith.

Our list is certainly a LOT better than to lose by 90+ points to [censored] Fremantle!

Is It?? Really??

Today consolidated 4 themes that have emerged and been growing over the past 2 years, but on full display this year win, lose or draw.

Our kicking skills are poor. Really poor. We hand the ball over unpressured time and time again. Today was foul. Our foot skills lack penetration, favour opposition interception, but it is often covered up by Petracca or Bowey getting one right making us froth at the mouth. And we have not recruited good foot skill players in the last 3 years.

Our forward line is weak. I have some compassion for Fritsch but even he this year has had moments of disinterest and weak effort. Kozzie is too much flash and not enough result. Petty forward (which I thought was a very good idea) is an epic fail. Singe basic forward error: lack of movement. Stationary targets to create scores from stoppages. And unfortunately I think this part of our game plan. We lack presence.

Our midfield is struggling. There is a part of me that cannot believe this to be true, but the results don't lie. We often now get beaten badly at stoppages and centre bounces, and teams annihilate us by handballing forward. Gus was way more important than we thought, with Sparrow, ANB, Rivers, Kozzie and others not being given time to develop in there.

Our backline covers over many cracks

I do NOT believe it is time to sack Goodwin, play the kids blah, blah, blah. I have watched a lot of Casey games and apart from Jefferson and Verrall developing nicely, there is no-one forcing the door down for an AFL game.

I don't think there is a single answer, but I would love the boys to find a fire in the belly again, which is the main thing lacking. A John Northey rant. The aggro of Shwartz or Grinter or Neitz. No thuggery, but a fierceness, a line in the sand. Jakovich arrogance.

Sadly, the 2024 premiership is probably beyond us now.

Time to let Choco go? As you said our kicking skills are still subpar.

Worse than Josh schache. Did nothing at Adelaide. Did not get along with the medicos there. Makes me so furious we recruited him. Offers nothing, lazy, soft and weak

And you know this for a fact exactly how? Do share.

Schiiiit, you’d have everyone sacked if you could. How about that goddamn useless boot studder… off with his head.

I'm not normally one to jump on here right after a loss, but jeez, that really sucks the air out of the room.

The way we completely switched off after 4 mins and let them control the rest of the game was embarrassing. Amongst other things, we were badly out-coached.

StKilda were completely disinterested, so Im not taking much from that.  I dont think we've been competitive or impressive since the Blues game.

As for the players today:

That's the second game in 3 weeks where May has been completely outplayed.

I thought Viney, Petracca and Oliver weren't as influential as previous seasons.  Again.  Granted, Oliver didn't have a pre-season, but we looked slow and our lack of polish was really on display.  Something needs to change.

Swallow is like a mini Viney, with less polish.  I'm not sure how you can improve the situation. Nibbler had his worst game for the season, has he been found out? Salem was solid, if not spectacular.

Windsor looks like he needs a rest, but probably wont get one. Im not sure if Billings is a better option than a tired Caleb.

Kozzie completely faded out of the game, as did many.  It's like they had given up on the red and blueprint.

Our forward line was putrid today, again.  We are lucky to have TMac in the side to go forward.  I think Disco will get there given time.  JVR will help.  Petty is just awful. I dont know why everyone picks on McAdam, he's 27 and has played 50 AFL games - he's not that good and never will be.

I thought Chandler & Rivers tried.  Fritsch improved when moved down back.

The backline should get some sort of book of vouchers or a box of chocolates for the number of times it came down there.  You'd think McVee should spend more time in the middle if our skills and smarts are letting us down.

In all, some tried, others were unsighted.  It's like they all just disappeared. Did they give up?  What does that say about their mindset, preparation and commitment?

Max's shoulders must be bloody sore from carrying this team.

Other teams are kicking it about, rather than pushing through contests, which is exposing our lack of skill or ability to adapt. They are drawing out our intercept defenders, opening up the ground and delivering to their forwards. Our inability to get the ball forward was frightening.

Are Freo that good, are we that bad? It doesn't seem like a one-off.

Im going out for some oxygen.  Take care of yourselves.

I did, and feel like I have been scammed. I believed that I was coming to watch two teams play football, but instead only one turned up.

Strange you offer this. I had the same thought earlier today. Whatever he is doing is not transferring into game day.

However, beneath any coaching lies the cold hard truth that 90% of our list are average kicks or poor kicks. Bowey, McVee, Fritsch and May would probably be our only above average kicks. I'm not sure a new kicking coach would change this.

PROBABLY PROBABLY??? Mate after today, we look like a bottom of the ladder team in the Uranus League of Intergalactic footy in a one team competition!!

Think we cannot use the excuse that Oliver starting later we are in round 12 that's plenty of time to be fit.

I had a vivid dream in 2017 we played off against the peptides at some stage in the future in a GF and the game was up for grabs with 5 minutes to go as we were heading towards our goals (Punt Rd end).

With the Peptides showing something i thought it might be this season but after today....pffft

I've had that many stupid random grand final dreams I can't even remember them all.

One of them was during 2001 playing them in a rematch GF that year and I was at the game but my seat was in the Botanic Gardens.

Guess I was really in the nosebleeds..

Spending a Second rounder on Shane Mcadam
Knocking back two first rounders for Petty on the last day of trade
Trading Grundy for a future second that will be in the 40’s
Losing our backup ruckman and three inside mids and not replacing them
Jack Billings acquired
Fullarton acquired , pretending he’s a ruckman when he’s actually just another below average forward who doesn’t like contact

extending Josh Schace

bailing out of the Liam Henry trade
All in a years work for Tim Lamb

Doesn’t read well does it.
Complete Failure sadly….

I said after eagles game we looked tired. The ability to fight back from half time gone. Today, sadly was a stark revelation of this. Rebuilding this club is now the priority. And that starts with the coaches.

91 points is a shellacking and embarrasment.

We now have a bottom 6 percentage.

As @layzie said earlier, for the last 4 seasons I’ve had confidence that we can stay in any game, if not by winning then by fighting hard to keep the deficit down. Our record through 2020-23 speaks to that.

The WC loss and now today really shattered that confidence. Our percentage being as low as it is shakes me more than I thought it might.

It's plenty of time to be fit, but he's come from so far back it's impossible to get into the kind of condition to compete at an alite level, most of the time in season is spent preparing for and recovering from games, not putting in the grind it takes to develop elite fitness levels, afraid 2024 has sailed for Clayton, and I'd question whether he has the drive and determination to get back to the levels seen previously again in his career, if he has worth, id consider trading him at seasons end

At least he owned it. But we need serious action.
recruiting McAdam was a Complete bust for a decent pick.
Petty should have been sold last year when he held serious value (whilst injured)

the midfield has been stagnant for 2 years

This Loss of such magnitude may have one positive….

Everyone is under the Hammer. Coaches and Players…

The payoff for never belting teams was that we never got belted so always had a good %.. now if we’re getting belted it’s not great. Lever will at least be back in 3 or so but if the rest don’t lift things’ll be too far gone by then

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
