Welcome to Demonland: Luker Kentfield

Pleased to read the FD see some potential in this young bloke and signed him for another season. Admittedly had little impact coming in cold last season. Admire his grit and determination after being hospitalized with a serious illness in the pre-season. Has an athletic presence and that huge grab at the Whitten Oval announced his return to the playing field. From invisible to visible in the blink of an eye. One to watch with interest.

More than happy to see how he develops given another season. Nice hands and comfortable overhead, go get em Luker.

Lad hasnt had a full AFL pre-season yet, would be premature to cut him, no issue retaining him for another year to see how he goes.

Like you tc I hope he can be a part of the senior team. The is plenty of room for another rags to riches football story.

Happy to see this. Was quietly impressed with his game against Essendon. Strong overhead and good by foot

I see its going to be another one of those years when we don't make nearly enough changes to the list.

I assume Kentfield gets another year on the back of his nine disposals over the past two Casey games - if that doesn't scream future AFL player, I don't know what does.

For a young tall like Kentfield it's not about dominating games it's about attributes. He's got them. One grab mark, lots of athleticism, professional approach, good hands and adequate pace. Rookie. A one year contract.

Sometimes you need to look beyond the stats sheet.

A mere six months ago Luker was gravely ill, double pneumonia with multiple complications. He was bedridden for weeks. He lost a third of his body weight and all his muscle tone. When he returned well into the preseason MOST OF WHICH HE MISSED OUT ON he was unrecognisable, literally unrecognisable. He was so weak it was an effort for him to PUT HIS [censored] SHOES ON. Yet you’ve no qualms about bagging him? He’s a kid ffs. Considering what he’s been through it’s a huge achievement he can play at all.

Really went to see him forward for the next few weeks at Casey. He’s a more natural forward. I’m not seeing him as a key defender. Let’s see him as a big marking forward. That’s why we drafted him.

He is named in the forward pocket tomorrow.

So, he’s a Paul Callery type?

Couple of cms taller and less barrel chested.

He is one of the most underdeveloped kids on the list. he has good attributes, like contact, good football brain, good kick and has a good bit of dog in him. If you watch Casey play good sides with our delivery, Jesus wouldn't get a kick there.

Well said people forgot about how sick he was and as we all know if you miss out on a fair chunk of pre-season it puts you back a fair way.

3 goals for first game forward all year.

Well done.

Looking forward to him doing a full first pre season.

He is one of our better chances to become a senior player.

Well in Luker keep on putting your best foot forward young man.👏👌

Thought he played very well today, took some good marks, fought hard, and kicked some nice goals as well for his effort. Glad we have him signed up for another year

Kentfield was recruited as a key forward. Guess what? He showed he’s a key forward. Not a CHB. Keep him forward and let’s see what he delivers over the next weeks. Not beyond getting a debut in the last few weeks of the season.

Sometimes it's about longer term development. Time in defence didn't/doesn't hurt him.

Took some nice grabs down back, one would be in the running for mark of the year a few weeks back.

Has to be good for his confidence.

Forget about a senior debut this year, let him get a full preseason under his belt first.

Yep and in the mire I see LOTS OF UPSIDE!

Imagine Luker after a full preseason… you’ll see nothing but upside!

BTW, I sat next to a lovely couple on the plane home (just landed). They had also come to the Gold Coast from Melbourne for the game. Turns out they were Jeffo’s mum and dad. I told them about you and how you’re a dedicated fan of his and how you’ve had unwavering faith in him from the beginning*. They were genuinely happy to hear this. I got the feeling they don’t hear stuff like this often.

*I left out the bit about you being unhinged and how you type in capitals too much and that you’re like a broken record

You’re welcome!

It’s always nice when you’re struggling as a KF and you get to play back for a few weeks. Your head feels better, less punches to the ears and the ball isn’t just dumped on you.

I've liked what i've seen in the VFL games. He's always been the 3rd tall either forward or back, so you don't get the bulk of the possessions. I don't believe he is tall enough for a key position but because he is so mobile, takes a good mark and is a good kick, I'd like to see him as a tall wingman that most sides now invest in. If we go down that track he is the most eligible on our list to do it other than Langford who will put on size and become an important midfielder. A tall wingman who drifts forward to take a mark and kick a goal would be very valuable.

It was strange we had 9 talls in the VFL on the weekend (without Johnson) and only 5 in the main side. It says a lot about the 9 either not tall enough or not good enough. Gold coast had 4 over 200cm.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
