Great to witness the potential downfall of Geelong.

I didn't mind them in that 2007-2011 window but then they just never went away. Got an arrogant coach, cheating captain who ducked for his entire career, and, well, I don't know what it is about Dangerfield either, but I can't stand him!

Was hoping they wouldn't get that flag in 2022, but they did (well deserved too)... now they can hopefully bugger off... finally!

They will probably go on a 15 game winning streak now.

Donโ€™t celebrate too soon.

They have plenty of good young players including 2 good young bigs in Conway and Neale and unlimited farms to entice even more good players.

Well Scott was full of praise for Gold Coast. Suddenly theyโ€™re one of the best sides in the competition according to him ๐Ÿ™„

Letโ€™s face it.  Until they played us they had only beaten one top 8 team (Blues), and even in that win let in 105 points.  Iโ€™m not sure Scott really knows who the good teams are this year as they have hardly played any of them.

Still smiling...

De Koning late withdrawl - home sick

Dawkins - rested; on this years performance wouldn't notice

pub im at just played the full replay.

and it has now restarted

Very hard round from the what is the best for MFC perspective.

A Carlton and GWS win just about puts the top 6-8 teams within one game of each other given wins to Pies and Port

You can just about guarantee that avoiding a game up there will be on every 'big' Victorian team's fixture wish list for 2025.

Expect Geelong will feel theyโ€™ve done their โ€˜bitโ€™ for the Aussie Rules Northern Frontier. Will go to the AFL pontificate cat in hand obsequiously requesting the dose not to be repeated for another generation.

6-0 against fellow contenders is a fantastic record. Sydney deserving flag favourites at this stage

Absolutely TC. You won't see them up in the NT again anytime soon. Bet on it.

A long and well researched article on the decreasing number of indigenous players at AFL level.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/falling-through-the-cracks-afl-zones-private-school-scholarships-in-spotlight-to-stop-drop-in-indigenous-numbers-20240514-p5jdlg.html

An obvious starting point according to veteran AFL recruiters, Sydneyโ€™s Kinnear Beatson and Geelongโ€™s Stephen Wells, is to understand the scale of the problem.

โ€œThe AFL firstly has to try to find out why players are not playing in the numbers they were before, before they try to come up with answers,โ€ Wells said.

There are plenty of theories, with the list as long as Lewis Jettaโ€™s bouncing run in the 2012 grand final.

They include the depth of the overall talent pool, the effect of COVID-19 cutbacks, the lack of ownership and accountability for Indigenous talent pathways, and the impossible demands on poorly paid talent identification officials in state league clubs.

Cats have a good run and probably still top 4 side with good amount of GMHBA games so likely 15 to 16 wins at least. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Chris Scott.  Heโ€™s a sore sore loser.  Thatโ€™s a fact.

What I noted in his last three losing press conferences was that he never mentioned the opposition team by name, not even once!  (In contrast the opposition coaches all made โ€˜positiveโ€™ mentions of Geelong)

The only exception to this being that he named one opposition player (Horne Francis).

I oh so hope that GWS get the job done next weekend.  Imagine, four losses in a row. Beautiful ๐Ÿคž

This is technically incorrect as of the start of this round. Theyโ€™re actually 5-0.

Also, 4 of those 5 wins were at the SCG. The Swans are a great team but they have an awfully soft draw. They only play Essendon and the Giants as the only top 6 teams away for the remainder of the season.

They are unbelievably lucky to not play Melb, Geelong or Carlton in Victoria this season and got the Pies at the right time.

[censored] Carlton. Swans by 50 please. Who will the umps favour? They love both teams.

I know the Darwin venue and the shorter breaks will have impacted, but I think (hope?) this might be an insight into the potential cliff that actually is coming for Geelong.

Their missing players were Dangerfield, Hawkins, Duncan, Stanley, Cameron and De Koning. The first five are over 30, and there has to be a strong argument that the first four wonโ€™t play beyond this season.

Without them, they were 11 goals behind a mid-table side (who themselves had a couple of outs).

Theyโ€™ll no doubt be throwing cash to whichever midfielder is available this year because their midfield is no good.

This.

They haven't got a midfielder under 30 who likes like becoming A grade, let alone a superstar.

Long may it last.

Blues winning isnโ€™t a bad thing.

They have a hard month of footy so will drop a couple more anyway. At least by winning they keep Swans within reach.

4 goals down against a VG team... almost game over

Pressure is so important.
Carlton getting of to another flyer, why canโ€™t we do this? Getting back into games is admirable but only gets you so far.

Itโ€™s frustrating to watch Sydney do the one thing we couldnโ€™t early last week. Find a way to kick a goal.

Why doesnโ€™t opposition club get to have its cheer squad behind the goals when playing Sydney?

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, theyโ€™re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this weekโ€™s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckmanโ€™s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipperโ€™s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0โ€“5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
