Two of the most important recruits for Melbourne were Bernie Vince and Jordan Lewis

They were at a time when Melb was crud for years and no gun player wanted to come near the club

We were in a critical part of our building phase with numerous young players and no one with Premiership experience on the field. Vince was a two time B&F winner and a great teacher 

In fact there were very few at the club with any Premiership experience until Roos came along. No one knew how to win.

And Lewis, with 4 Premierships was possibly the most important because of his stature in the game. Players hung off every word he said and followed has advice.

These two with Roos (and Peter Jackson) rescued the MFC.

Totally agree. I would add Daniel Cross, for the training standards he brought, to those two as well.

Shaun Smith. Mark of the century but in hindsight a bad taste in mouth for other reasons.

Jordan Lewis. Helped us get out of the doldrums.

Wayne Gordon coming from Collingwood played in 1980 and 81 for us. Tragically he got cancer, had to retire and passed away in 1983 aged 29.

Joel McDonald was arguably the biggest "howler" we made in recent history.

For some reason bizarre PR reason the club was telling its members what a coup it was recruiting Joel when in fact he was a plodding journeyman.

Anyway we took him & next pick Tigers picked Dylan Grimes (whose brother Jack was already at the Dees).

Probably the crime of the century.
