ND to be told this week his contract wont be renewed. No exceptions. This should be made public. If he chooses to see year out is up to him. Club should contact Guy Mckenna. This is a man who has had premiership sucess as a player and has spent time under a first rate coach. Credit where credit is due, Malthouse has always got the most out of a `suspect list`. Yes J.Longmire also fits that criteria but would he bring the right game plan? Anyone can drop numbers behind the ball, but that should not be our first option. One on one is crucial, long kicking built on the back of a strong defensive unit. Miller is constantly under seige on this site. The bloke can play football. His shooting for goal is no worse than Roo, Tarrant or the whole Richmond forward line. Before Lethal went to Brisbane there was a redhead running around the forward 50. He was quickly moved to CHB. Could Leppitsch play.... yes, could he cut it as a forward... no. Maybe not this year but in recent times we have all seen him give Hall and Pav spankings. His move to the backline should be a permanent one. Allowing him time to settle back in. With Miller, Rivers, Carroll and Wheels as the core, things start to look good. Our flankers/runners should be given equal time to prove their worth for next year to fill the remaining two spots. Newton should be given his chance. Tell him he will get eight to ten games in a row regardless of form. Taking the pressure of him, letting him show us what he can do. Offer Pav 800000. For this to have any chance we must have a new coach. Who we give Freo with a draft pick is debatable. Time will tell. If we are to chase a player of his callibre, we must go hard. Should we not get him, all is not lost.

I like your style. Welcome to the site. I have enjoyed my time reading and contributing.

Some comments ;

Whatever happens, ND should be treated with respect.

Good point about Malthouse, and I too am concerned about Longmire. Some of these candidates seem to get a life of their own as the 'next thing', and mainly thanks to mentors, eg Carey's support for Longmire, Roos support for Lyon talking them up.

I hate to say this but Grant thomas has been very impressive in the media this year, and he built an excellent team from the ground at the saints and got them into succcessive Prelim's.

Millers last chance is as a backman. He will never cut it as a forward. Another stat-less game last week.

Yeah lets boost club morale by sacking the coach after round nine that would really help! As if the guys arent feeling crap enough! Just because someone can play football does not mean they can COACH. It is a different kettle of fish. I am dead against losing ND but if we are going to I want someone with experience, not some hack who thinks he can coach cos he had a reasonale career playing

How many more years do you give Daniher to get the list right, clear the deadwood, recruit the personnel with the physical and mental toughness to win a premiership? Why don't we give him another 10 years. You must be kidding DB!

I have said it on this site before. If you want to get fair dinkum and win a premiership back a truck load of cash up to the Matthews front door in Brisbane and do whatever it takes to convince him to make Melbourne his next project! He has all the credentials, experience, unwaving commitment for success, uncomprising discipline and a little bit of mongrel. He won't take any crap from the players and football department and the rest of the backslappers around the club. Hell he kept a lid on Collingwood in 1990 to win a premiership. No one else before or since him has been able to do that in 50 years!

Matthews may want to retire or finish his days at Hawthorn but if we really want success we need to go after him with every resource we have available.

Give him another year after this year, we can hardly judge him on this year

Of course we can. It's his football department. He's responsible for the staffing. He's responsible for our pre-season. The current list has had 10 years of his input. It's his game plan. It's his strategies. It's his management. If not, then what the hell is he doing as the coach?

OK, injuries don't help, but either does coming out and getting belted by over 10 goals by the yardstick team in the competition. These are the games that tell where we are really at. And that's second bottom on the ladder. Just.

We got smashed by them last year too and we were a top four team then! He cant do anything else unless he is going to go out there and play with them as well. Geez its easy to blame the coach isnt it. The fact is the team just dont have it right now ND is doing everything short of pulling on a damn jumper get off his back

If my memory serves me well, we only lost to the weagles by 20-something points.

we weren't smashed, but lost by 12 scoring shots, their kicking was a joke. we kicked the first 3 before they'd even woke up as well, and then i think they kicked the next 4.8 or something.

So let's sack the players instead! As I said "The current list has had 10 years of his input." Your blind faith in a coach who will leave the club soon is admirable, but the plain fact is that his best year was 8 years ago in 2000 and second best year was 10 years ago in his first year at the club. But sure, keep giving him an extra year and by the year 2017, things may have turned around for us. Problem is we'll probably be playing in Auckland.

'ND to be told this week his contract won't be renewed'.

A thread on Demonology, 'It could be this week', is worth reading.

Either way, if the board isn't considering options right now it's being derelict in its duty.

If ND turns it around this season and we win the flag next year, fantastic. But in the eventuality that doesn't happen the board simply has to be looking hard at options.

why do people think that because the coach/entire coaching panel hasn't been sacked then the whole board must be doing nothing?

it's a ridiculous thing to say, clearly the whole club is working to get out of this trouble, but i for one am glad they're not throwing us back into the mess of 96.

Settle petal. Read more carefully.

I'm assuming the board is being pro-active given the current circumstances and I have no doubt it is. This board has been the most effective since your low benchmark of the mid-nineties. I agree entirely.

How this board could throw us back into the mire still confounds me however.

Round 1 against the Saints summed it up. All pre season we heard about the hunger after being knocked out by Freo last year. What garbage. Two easy losses to Carlton last year costing us a top four spot. Players under achieving. Some peoples logic would say only the players that are injured know how to tackle, sheppard, man up and pressure the ball carrier. No ND is not totally to blame, the players must share some of this. It takes a bigger man to walk away.

Cant wait for ever.Make some real decisions.Lose a few non performing players who have had more chances than they would get at any other club.Thank Daniher for his efforts and get a replacement organised.Players to be told they will not be guaranteed a spot for next year and if that means paying a few out ,so be it.If any player cannot kick accurately over a 40 m distance then sack him too. There are too many soft people who keep saying we cant do this and we cant do that-Bulls*@t.Most of these people are also not super successful in business and cannot take criticism or deal with change. For this club to become the strong club it should be, it needs someone with balls to make some unpopular decisions. We cant sack every one in the middle of a season but we can prepare for a resurgence. Mr. Gardiner do something now and let all Demon people know what the plan is,because without a change of plans we are up sh*% creek. "Stop the Rot"

I share your naivety.

It's hardly being naive. I think the "merger" days are well and truely over for any club, including the Kangaroos. It just won't happen anymore.

The Football Public will judge the demons over the remaining games, As we get all our players back from injury, and being in the finals last year if we go down without a yelp, I imagine Daniher, Staff and players will come under the microscope.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
