I like Laurie, give him a bit more time I think he’ll be very decent. Had a better game than Woey I thought and only got half a game too!

Lay off the kid, he’s a kid, he didn’t get an extension for nothing have a bit of faith.

Kynan Brown, AMW !!

Sorry I meant during the draft we took him. I know it's a moot point today, just wondering.

Showed more than many others last night. He's been treated poorly by both coaching staff and fans.

Should have played the entire 2nd half of the year with our midfield out.

He was not the only player to turn it over kicking to Petty, who consistently runs to the wrong places and is continually out of sync with the rest of the team. Being able to take a contested mark does not make you a forward.

Everywhere you look this coaching staff has players out of position, square peg round hole stuff.

Totally Maddening

Does anyone remember what better players we could've picked instead of Laurie?

It’s not the drafting.  He had skills and evasive qualities in his under 18s year and fair call by JT.  Tough draft year 2020 due to limited games.

It’s his extension that was the issue.  Showed zero.  He looks to have lost pace.  Doesn’t work hard defensively to get back.  Kicking is okay but not anywhere near a strength.  Lacks the tools at AFL level

Footnote …His turnover last night was horrible … when running free with 3 free demons players , he kicked it straight to Pies player (they went back up the field to kick a goal) !!

Underwhelming news

seen it a lot recently. like Cast? Krypt?

Maybe Mr Fence doesn’t want to be labelled a blasphemist.

There is no way Laurie is quick enough. Small players almost always need either elite pace off the mark and/or high top end speed. There is only a handful of players that are top liners without those traits (Sheezel, Tim Kelly, ANB, Liam Baker) and Laurie is not as tough or skilled as those players.

It wasn't a deep draft and there's not a lot of talent taken after him.

McCreery probably the pick of them.

1. We sold our future pick to get an extra pick in that draft.

2. We re-contracted Laurie before the season, which was totally unnecessary.

We had every intention of using that pick on Max Holmes, but were gazumped by Geelong.

Shame we weren’t after Gulden.

Gulden was a swans academy player. He wasn’t going anywhere else.

We have bigger problems.

Laurie, unfortunately for him, is the reflection of our poor recruiting and list management of late.

A NQR player that the club expects to become the second coming of ANB.

Showed more intent and willingness then say Bayley Fritsch who could not look more disinterested and lazy as the night went on.

‘Sold our future’ what a wild statement

Laurie had only 26% TOG and ended the night 7 disposals, 5 contested, 4 clearances, 3 tackles and going disposal efficiency of 71% in the pouring rain.

He's not the problem most think he is, particularly as a depth player.

He also scored top 5 for speed in attack showing he's got good repeat efforts. If he spent more than 5 minutes in the team I suspect his defensive running patterns and positioning would improve.

I'll drop it for now as most don't want to hear it and seem to have made up their mind about him after last year.

He's earned his spot on the list as a depth player.

Read it again.

We traded our 2021 pick for a pick in 2020.

We effectively traded pick 20 in the 2021 draft for pick 22 in the 2020 draft.

Our future is ruined

We ended up getting that pick back and drafting JVR anyway… the horror…

For another future first round pick. JVR wasn’t free.

You’re right - but if I remember correctly that would have been pick 14 or 15 the next year

Which coincidentally we got in the Jackson trade anyway thanks to Freo finishing just below us

Trading future picks is fine when you’re in the window and finishing higher up the ladder, which we’ve done for the better part of four years now

Having said that I reckon we need to keep our 2025 pick unless it somehow can net us a top 15 pick this year - no guarantees we’re not in for another rough year…

You pay a steep price to do it and it worked with Kossie because we selected so well. But the other similar trades have been costly (although we have still selected well with JVR and Bowey and so they haven't ended up so bad). I would prefer we go the other way and trade our picks into the future (and earn the steep interest rate) but the people in power have too much career risk and this conflicts with the long-term interests of the club.

Obviously the trade into the 2020 draft would have also been a spectacular win had we netted Bowey and Holmes.

Not a fan but thought he played ok for half a game.

Looking back, not a brilliant draft overall.

As for the other comments, he was better last night in the game.  1 terrible turnover but he composure seemed better than in previous games.

If you in and out of the team its harder to really settle mentally as when you play you also thinking if you screw up your out the next week.  That pressure often results in actions and decisions that is not how a player would normally play.  When you have certainty in your place, you see players develop a lot faster has they'll take risks and put the team before themselves.

He should have more regular game time post Kings' birthday to develop at the top level.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
