I was silly enough to involuntarily volunteer myself to put up the bones of what will hopefully one day become something useful, on this forum. Yes, a comprehensive list of the nicknames of those players who occupy a position in the 2024 Players List. I’d like to see this pinned to the top of the forum, and not just for this year, but to go on for years to come.

I cannot take all of the credit for this (in fact, I can take very little credit), as the list that has passed to me for the compilation of this final list, was created by the hard work of @WalkingCivilWar … I have rearranged it to be in alphabetical order and added the players numbers in brackets next to each name. EZPZ. Thanks WCW!!

Anyone who knows the nicknames of players without one below, please feel free to pass it on or mention it in the comments, for inclusion.

Marty Hore doesn’t have a nickname? I have a few ideas I could pitch, but I think the best one is…

Martin.

Verrall’s is ‘Anchorman’

Lachie Hunter is ‘Hunts’

Marty Hore is ‘Marty Hore’

We have a huge Marty Hore fan in the DA. She has a jumper with his number on the back and above the number is the word ‘Dirty’ making it Dirty Hore, with a silent W. 😅 idk if Dirty is his nickname, but it’s funny.

Are these, well, Verrall’s genuine, or made up by yourself? 😉

Not a particularly creative set of names. And now I've gone on the internet looking up creative nicknames and will have nightmares tonight.

Keep it simple. Keep. It. Simple.

I made up Will Verrall’s.

Nobody inside the club calls Melky by Milkshake. I think it might have been coined by the deebrief boys along with the equally embarrassing Spargypants.

Matthew Jefferson is also nicknamed 'the magician'.

Tom Fullarton's nickname at the Lions was 'fullcream' however I have no confirmation that it has carried over to the dees .

Thanks, @hardtack!

Dem bones (dem bones, dem dry bones 🎶) could be enhanced - calling all 'Landers, not just you 🙂 - by signifying which are the names the boys use for eachother and which are 'ours', e.g. BBB, I think?

And who'll step up with a girls list? 😮

Does #5 ever get 'Truck'?

friends of mine have specialised nicknames for some players...

judd mcvee - chris (although apparently he doesn't like it)

tom mcdonald - plugger (cos of his kickin action for goal and cos he can 'plug' any hole)

taj woewoedin - woey 2.0 (for obvious reasons)

ben brown - sideshow bob (cos of his former hairdo and the resemblance with a certain simpsons character)

Gussy was calling Jud, Knives McVee

Although it hasn't caught on (yet), I've been calling Matthew Jefferson 'Starship'.

You’re right. I added Milkshake because some folks on DL call him that. That’s the only time I hear it.

As for Spargo, you’re right again. Nobody calls him SpargiPants. Except for me… to his face. 😅 I greeted him with “how’re going, SpargiPants?!” a couple of weeks ago and he was chuffed. Well, the corners of his mouth turned upwards about a micron (one 1-thousandth of a millimeter) which by his standard means he’s deliriously happy. 😝

Knuckles is way better. Although neither nickname suits him imo. He’s sweetness personified.

Yay!

I have heard the players and coach refer to Viney as just VIN many times. Sounded funny to hear because he has just always been VINES to me.

Are these nicknames in the OP confirmed as official nicknames and not just fan assumed nicknames?

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
