Maybe Goody is going through an experimental phase.

We shouldn't mix experimental with bad management!

Might be fairer to grade his management after the game.

As BDA notes his selections last week, much ridiculed on here, turned out to be very good decisions.

We have 2 games in 5 days coming up. In no world can Petty and Ben Brown play both those games. It makes sense to play Petty and sub him off for Ben Brown or vice versa. Also possible that JVR will do more rucking this week to help Gawn and keep him fresher and that means we can play both JVR and Ben Brown together.

I can only see Petty being the sub. He’s barely match fit, so I’d guess they’ll want to use him as an impact player where he can run hard for half (or less) of a game.

Good to see him back though!

I feel he might start. Can’t ever remember us using a key tall as a sub before except the Shack, but that was only to cover the ruck position.

What if someone gets injured in the first minute? That's a full game for Petty whether he's sub or not.

I obviously don't know his fitness levels or how his injuries are tracking but this all feels rushed and sketchy to me.

We’re playing the 3rd worst team in the comp. It’s a training run

Sure. Last week was good. The week before playing an underdone Spargo with Billings sub was not so good!

With due respect, I think there was just one selection last week that was questioned and that was the dropping of Tomlinson for TMac.

Welcome back Petts.

Maybe Hore the sub.

Never in my life have I seen a player statless in the magoos promoted into seniors. RUBBISH on any level! Hore the sub?? HE WAS PHENOMENAL last week

last week's selections were heavily criticised. As it transpired they worked out well.

maybe the FD know what they are doing and we should back them in. If they reckon is good to go then get him in is my view. no point in waiting.

Agree with this, not many thought TMac and BBB were going to get through a game and they did. I’ll be shutting my eyes anytime it looks like someone’s stood on Perry’s foot but I don’t think it’s worth panicking over picking him.

Doesn't make sense for this week however my guess is this is a long term view over the next three weeks. Next week's game against Port is now an 8 pointer. Then only a five day break to what becomes another danger game v Crows. You'd rather manage Petty's reintroduction against one of the bottom teams where any issues with subs should be manageable rather than leave it to the following week in such an important game against Port and then the Crows.

This^^^, is a selection committee, last week was 5 changes, (Melbourne has changed the paradigm on how many changes you can make in a team, used to be 5 was a kiss of death) Spargo may not have worked and yes the Semi, but overall club has been getting it right for awhile. I have faith.

Billings and Langdon on the wings.

Windsor as the starting sub.

Petty to be subbed out late in the third qtr.

Going on performance you'd probably pick Sparrow as the sub.

If not they might give Ben Brown a half and Petty a half .

But, who knows goody might start him and say have windsor as the sub as part of managing his program and making sure we don't burn him out (he's played all of the 4 games thus far).

Windsor was subbed out for Woey last week, (assuming he/ him is Windsor)

Who got subbed off against the Dogs?

Im still bemused, Petty in on almost zero disposals!

Petty, Wow

Suggest he's massively underdone

I just hope that this sent a repeat of the Spargo fiasco - hopefully the FD will have had "learnings" from that.

Maybe Sicily will give it just a gentle kick - that is OK now it seems.

The Duke

I thought so, just wasn't sure

Fits with the idea they might be managing him?

Starting as a sub, or coming off for the sub, would support that theory.

Would be smart given he is only playing his third game in his first season of afl footy.

The sub has to come from the 5 players named as interchange. That is Ben Brown cannot be named as sub.

The sub has to come from Windsor, Hore, McDonald, Petty or Oliver.

I think Petty.

Petty back early to make sure if he does go to Adelaide his foot is well and truly fkd

100% about getting some senior time in before the Adelaide games - subbed in or out with BBB opposite

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
