Hope he takes the AFL and Maynard to the cleaners, it won’t fix what happened but it’s the only way they can send a message this can’t be accepted

The AFL needs to get up to date with all major world sports and implement an order off rule for serious violations. The pseudo legalistic AFL tribunal is an anachronism and time and time again we have seen high profile players from influential clubs get away with murder facilitated by legalistic mumbo jumbo. The system is set up to be scammed. This can be done by umpire consultation on field and off field with supplemented video evidence. The cynic in me believes the AFL only prefer the current system because it generates media attention to keep the game on the sports front pages just about every week.

Totally agree with your last sentence.

Captain courageous Angus! That ever so brave diving mark in the GF was so typical of Gus. The perfect shot for goal and unbridled celebration was the catalyst for the burst of goals which followed. Thank you Gus and we hope your enforced retirement will spur the rest of the team to a premiership with a goal after the siren to beat Collingwood by a point. This was from a free kick following a Maynard indiscretion. Wouldn't that be absolute perfection?

Thanks mate for all you did for the MFC and for your loyalty. You were a true champion.

So sad for Brayshaw.

He will be massively missed by us.

Wish u all the best Gus.

U were one of the best players in our 21 Premiership.

3rd best behind Trac and Fritta.

Slips catch in the pocket diving full stretch in front of himself where angels fear to tread and kicks truly at a crucial stage in the 3rd quarter to put us in striking distance then bang, bang, bang, bang!

Absolutely classy and courageous till the end Gussy!

Thankyou!

Mixed emotions. A naturally gifted footballer with a footy brain. However, definitely the right decision given the importance of his health. I think we were all worried about the prospect of another knock during the season. Even a minor knock. I don’t think I have ever felt as sick as watching him knocked out during the QF. I remember muttering under my breath, “please move Gus, please move”. One can only imagine the horror for his family.

Despite the sadness of his forced retirement, he leaves the game with an impeccable record as a player and and a reputation as an outstanding person.

He will be missed. A heart and soul player. He will be remembered for his outstanding service and passion for his club. Who will ever forget that courageous mark and goal, and his emotional reaction with his teammates and Demon supporters.

Thanks for the memories Gus. You are a star.

If anyone outside of football attacked anyone like that, they would be subject to massive penalties in the form of compensation for work lost or jail for assault.

I think that Collingwood player needs to be sued for loss of income.

Yes mitigating circumstances but it would be supported by all the other players with concussion problems.

The degree of responsibility for that action was Maynard, within the rules or outside, he chose to do it.

The AFL would mess their collective pants,  The bump would be banned very quickly.   Just my view.

Good on yer Gus !

A point? i want blood, another 70 pointer will do me.

Thank you Gus for your outstanding contribution to the club. You retire with the admiration of all Dees supporters and no doubt the whole AFL community. Almost won the Brownlow (you were robbed), won a premiership and made a stellar contribution on that day and every day you were at the club.  You always put the club first and now its time to put yourself first. Great BBQ Onion tips btw.

Whilst we are sad, we are very proud of all you have done in your career and know that you will continue to succeed in whatever comes next because despite the hurdles life has put in your way you have shown a unique ability to jump right over them.

All the best to you and your family.

The helmet must go in the Demon museum surely?

Gussy's choice obviously.

Treasured piece of Demon Memorabilia.

Just like the Gus bobble dolls    will not be anymore

So sad Gus has retired. He's a supremely talented footballer and great leader at the club. His selflessness and versatility set him apart from other players. He could play on every line and be close to All Aus level anywhere on the field. His 2021 playing as a defensive winger was the definition of being a selfless team player. He could've run around picking up 30 touches a game, but instead took on an unglamorous defensive role and nailed it. He was a key part of our game style and premiership. It sucks we'll be without him this year and in future, but his health is more important. I was surprised he wasn't forced into retirement after the Maynard hit. The AFL and Maynard need to be held accountable for that sham, and I hope Gus sues the absolute sh*t out of them.

I wish Gus nothing but good health and a lifetime of happiness. He'll always be remembered as a legend of our club and a ripper bloke. Thank you Angus.

I truly hope this isn't the last we see of Gus. A development role at the club must be created for him immediately.

Justice has been done!

(not)

Eat your words, McGuire.

The limp jellybacked AFL and their "toss a coin" approach to the head being sacrosanct have contributed to this.

Head high, Angus, you will always be a flag hero. That gutsy mark in the 3rd quarter will always remain a highlight. All the best.

It’s the right call. That night was sickening and he should never put himself in that position again.

LOVE YOU GUS.

As for Maynard, I look forward to warmly welcoming you to the MCG Kings birthday.

...Where were all of the complaints about the AFL being too slow to act on changing rules relating to smothers, prior to this incident?  The fact is that the AFL have now acted and have made changes to those rules, citing the players duty of care etc.

...

If you believe that Maynard was genuinely attempting to simply smother, you and I are on different planets.  So I think the quesiton you posed is irrelevant.

Just because you can reasonably argue (as you did) that Angus' condition had a long history, says nothing to absolve the AFL and its sychophant/gravy-train media of the shameful outcome of the 'trial' of Maynard.

Thanks Gus, yourself and family always come first ❤️💙. You’ll always be a legend of the MFC family.

A door closes and that means a door opens for someone, if this gives the lads some more fire in the belly, good, Gus was, sorry is, a real team player ❤️💙

After the disbelief and the anger and the visualizations of revenge on Maynard, I want to say cheers to Gus for all the guts and effort. Wish him all the best.

Best to Gus.

Can we sign someone else to the list or too late?

I think its too late until Mid Season Draft.  with Gus retiring and I presume Smith on Inactive list, does that mean we now have 2 spots available to fill at MSD?

Heart break for Gus.

His teammates too.

Super brave decision - but obviously the right thing for him though.

CTE is a nightmare. Hard not think it will ultimately change the sport.

Fir one thing, I'd go with goody's take, and flat out ban the bump.

People will say it would change footy too much - but would it really?

I mean how often does a bump actually achieve something other than rattling someone's cage?

Tackling is almost always the better option than a bump in terms of say winning the ball back and/or preventing an opponent disposing of the ball.

Thanks Gus for all you've given the club and fans.

The Only thing about banning the bump, what happens when 2 players are going for the ball and the second player is half a spilt second late, and bumpes him, Pandora box you don't want to open, also this wasn't even a bump, this was a player who chose to go with his shoulder instead of his hands when falling to The ground

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

  • PREGAME: Geelong

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
