PRESEASON TRAINING: Wednesday 7th February 2024

Why was he unfit to start with? I’ve heard (from several people including a relative of his) that Shane and Burgess didn’t work well together.

You hope he’s improving? In early December he was bent over, hands on knees, sucking in air after any exertion. It was a conspicuous sight. He’s currently so much fitter, the difference is huge.

It smacks of poor attitude? Maybe it appears that way to you, but I’ve spoken to him a bunch and his attitude is great. I’ve spoken to Kozzie about him, and Chocco and Perty as well as his relative whom I met last week. They only have positive things to say about him, that he’s determined to do well, he’s happy with us and with his training regimen.

Perhaps his demeanour and/or body language belies his enthusiasm and dedication. That, along with the fact that he’s a quiet, unassuming person might explain why you’d think you’re seeing a poor attitude.

Thanks WCW for clearing it up.

Re the bolded bit - it does strike me as odd that if he did have an issue for Burgess as a few have said, why would he come to Melbourne who would likely have the closest fitness approach to Burgess (of any club outside of Adelaide) given the influence and success he had only a few years ago with us.

Selwyn has a very different personality and approach to Darren

Definitely! CONTROL is boring. KAOS is fun. But I’m not sure I’d last long working under Siegfried, whereas the Chief is cool af.

Vee do not panic about pre-season injuries at Kaos, Shtarker!

I can’t believe he cost us a 2nd rounder and Adelaide used his defection to turn the heat on Petty, but his talent has been evident when he’s been training, which has been most of the time.

He’s not the first MFC recruit to struggle in their first preseason with us. Happened with a much bigger name last year

I can't believe Adelaide wanted Petty or Clarry for him!

Selwyn certainly does have a different way of working with the players, in particular, the indigenous boys. That’s not something I’ve noticed, it’s something I’ve been told.

Overall, Shane is happy to be living in Melbourne because his uncle and cousins - with whom he’s very close - live here, as well as his brother, Ash Johnson.

I believe his partner will be relocating across from ADL and has been spending a lot of time here in the meanwhile.

McAdam will be a brilliant player for us this season. He's not here for his endurance, he's here for his freakish talents inside the 50. Appreciate your support of him also WCW.

With Salem running laps with Oliver, I wonder whether Salem is really rehabbing something or just being used as company for Oliver as he continues with his re-integration. It would make sense to me if the club was helping Oliver by making sure he wasn't always doing the boring stuff (running laps) on his own.

It might be the company thing. They went overseas to Europe together at the end of the 2022 season, so they must get along ok.

This wouldn’t surprise at all. Salo is hands down the most popular amongst the players. He’s much loved and deservedly so since he’s a genuine good guy. I don’t know if this is how the new guys regard him but the old firm definitely do. I’d hazard a confident guess that the new guys feel the same way, and if they don’t already, they soon will.

PS: it’s not just the players. At our premiership reenactment I met a couple whose son had just started working as an analyst for us. I asked them which of our boys (if any) he had befriended and they said, “Christian Salem, from day one.”

I wouldn't mind either attending or taking part in a faithful reenactment of our premiership a la Civil War Reenactments where people dress up in period clothing to reenact the event.

The period clothing.

Thank you Dz. Totally agree with the reasons he’s here, as stated by you.

Also, I think oftentimes folks forget these are human beings, no two are alike, and when they come to a new club, a certain amount of nurturing is needed, as well as the cutting of a bit of slack. For mine, if he’s putting in as much as he possibly can - and he certainly is -  I’m in his corner.

100% has some awareness in the legs. I’m no sports injury specialist but if his running today was solely a fitness issue as has been suggested then he is a long way off from playing.

I don’t believe that to be the case. Whilst his conditioning when arriving at the club probably wasn’t up to scratch as has also been hinted at he has shown some impressive moments on the track that I have witnessed and I would still have picked him in the opening round given that Kozzy is out.

Today he 100% looked to be carrying something and did look uncomfortable at times. Most likely hammy awareness. Again I am not qualified to make that assessment but I wasn’t the only one to observe that.

If that is the case then he may be pushing up hill for opening round but I am choosing to start the year positively and hope he can play in one of the practice matches and then tear the SCG apart.

Burgo would have told McAdam to run it out

178 comments?! Did they train in the nude?

Believe me, had they trained in the nude there’d be 178 comments from me alone. And that’s just in the first half hour. 😂

LOL: imagine poor Clarrie. I regularly remind him to re-apply sunscreen, which he does. But there’s no amount of SPF100+ that’d protect his bits that never see the sun. Ouch! 😅

Yeah you'd imagine that he will get his opportunities if, in the absence of Fullarton, he is regarded as the next best ruckman (JVR to preferably take a few forward line ruck duals only)

Question for you PF (or anyone else)

What's Schache like in the ruck at AFL level? His hit out stats on AflTables aren't all that startling

In match sims he has held his own vs Max and I mean if Max is no 1 Ruckman in the league, that should be a pretty glowing endorsement! Plus he plays forward BETTER than Grundy could ever do!

Ok, that's good to hear, picket

The way things are going with injuries to our forwards and without an ideal 2nd ruck, it's hard to see Schache not playing in some capacity against Sydney.  Not that I would be looking at him to stand out though

On what we've seen, not much can be expected (Schache)

But calf complaints for older players can be notoriously difficult to shake off so it may well be Schache's time

The MC will be in his ear about getting to the front position as a KPF and if can do that, half the battle will be won (on his own part) But I wish him well if he gets a guernsey

We might even have to look at Turner, Adams or Jefferson if Schache is the only genuine tall forward available (apart from JVR)

Remembering that he'll need to be doing the 2nd ruck duties as we don't want to be overdoing it with Max as he enters his 33rd year

It's one thing going medium-tall but you don't want to going medium-small

Jefferson is miles away from AFL footy, Adams needs 10 really good games for Casey at least......Turner is the only one and I believe he's injured. I'll be shocked if Schache doesn't get a guernsey. I really hope he can clunk a few, bring the rest to ground and maybe kick 1 or 2.......

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
