any reports on how it went?

Stats wise: 5 disposals, 2 marks. 2 tackles and a goal.

Country dominated the inside 50’s and scoring shots and kept Allies in it with poor conversion.

Been a while since Ricky Mentha's come up anywhere. Gippsland have moved him to half back and looks like the switch paid off last weekend:

Stats: 22 disposals, 5 marks, 7 rebound 50s

Mentha had perhaps his best performance of the season to date for the Power, constantly providing dash and drive coming out of his side’s defensive 50. On numerous occasions he showed great speed and composure under pressure to get the opposition off guard on their transition. His silky skills, pressure acts and decision making were all features although at times his disposal by hand missed targets. Mentha showed great pace especially when it came to reading the play with loose ground balls and at times stood at the last line of defence where he saved a certain goal in the second quarter getting a hand to it before going over for the score.

I'm beginning to get very excited over this coming draft.

It feels like 2014 all over again!

"Silky skills", yes please.

If he continues that form he looks like a lateish pick. I expect Yze to be a very late pick or rookie.

Should be a few spots available on the list.

Great report. Some superlatives through the summary.

showed great speed and composure under pressure

His silky skills, pressure acts and decision making were all features

Mentha showed great pace

If he continues that form we may have to cough up a pick in the 40's.

Unlikely. He’s a rookie pick. Cat B rookie most likely.

We’re going to have an awful lot of half back flankers.

We'll need a couple more if Rivers and McVee move into the midfield. Nev Junior with speed would be a very welcome addition.

Biffen jnr is in the NGA at the Dogs.

From what I saw Carlton and the Dees have the best bunch.

Biffen Jnr does not need to put on any weight-hes got that covered.

As does the tree from which the apple made its rapid descent.

Disagree

Hore 27 and only got a spot coz seemingly we didn't have a clue what else to do with it

AMW and Howes do nice things at VFL level but have yet to prove to me they are consistent afl players.

Howes is a nice kick but defensive 1on1 ability, intercept marking, toughness, and burst/drive are all huge queries for mine

AMW is tough and can tackle but again i havent seen any linebreaking and has been fumbly in the 1s too, also doesnt get enough of it or in the right spots to use it like he does at Casey

Salo cant trust his body long term, Rivers is a mid which leaves Bowey (can't kick beyond 30m) and McVee (no notes)

Feel like we're actually really thin here, not as thin as the guts but not flush with options

Coates round 19 Rookie me scouting notes. Defender. He seems to have some of the spark and swagger of his vbottom age season. Showed composure and delivered the ball efficiently. Repelling attacks with sharp intercepts.

20 disposals. Likely rookie pick on potential.

#29 Ricky Mentha
Defender | 179cm | 04/09/2006

Stats: 20 disposals, 4 marks, 3 rebound 50s

Mentha has been recast as a defender during the back-end of the season and continued in that role over the weekend. He seems to have some of the spark and swagger of his bottom-age season back, with the Alice Springs native contesting the ball confidently and showcasing composure in possession. Mentha was involved in plenty of slow play across the backline and distributed the ball efficiently, while also repelling attacks with sharp intercepts and spurts of run.

Love to see Ricky Mentha on board with the Dees. Hopefully he can be a Cat B rookie under NGA Program.

I see Lindsay did his PCL over the weekend and may not take part in the combine. If we got a second first round pick I’m hoping we pick him up.

Mentha made the Rookie me central team of the week this week too

That is why you play them when you cannot make the finals so they get more experience.

Yes it helps, but it doesn’t always work.

If I was holding a football, you could rightly say, “he looks like an old, bald, unfit man holding a football.”

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
