Whats the point of the Gather Round?

In a parallel universe that didn’t have Gather Round this year, we finish second and play Brisbane in a week 1 MCG final.

Great. I’m flying to Melbourne from Alice the same weekend of gather round, hoping I could see the Dees play in Melbourne, something I haven’t done in about 10 years. Thanks AFL FFS. Even any game would have been good…

Hope we play at home the following weekend when I fly home.

CEO Dillon knew you were coming.

One day someone will be able to explain to me the point of the "gather" round.

The point is to get a tourism department to give the AFL heaps of cash for the honour. It works.

In that Parallel Universe we play one less game during the regular season and Melksham doesn't do his ACL

Again ...WHAT AN ABSOLUTE FRIGGEN DISGRACE!

The fixture list is always going to throw up challenges. If we are good enough, we'll win the flag. If not, we won't. That's all that matters, not who we play, where or when.

Exclusive: The Crows will again open Gather Round next year with a blockbuster clash at Adelaide Oval, facing Melbourne on Thursday night.

Yes we drew the short straw next season but that is so predictable. I said on DL a few months back we will play Crows or Port next season in Gather Round. Its so predictable.

Last year Collingwood got 10 days break before Gather round. We got 6  and we lost.

Will lowly Hawthorn play at the Cattery. Theyre well overdue but will they?  We'll know soon enough.

Dees to the Gabba again and Norff in Tassie- our injury graveyard?

I think Crows will get  red carpet service next season due to AFL making amends for the Swans debacle.

Just eyeballed now. Gather Round,  Pies v Hawks  AO

Hilarious.

A FESTIVAL OF FOOTY  (Afl)

Morons

They could screw is more by deeming our gather round v Adelaide to be our home game 🙄😮

Honestly I agree with this.

I don't love them from an attendance perspective, but I was a big fan of having Monday and Thursday nights on tv.

I found it very hard to follow when some Mondays and Thursdays had games and when the start times of Friday night games kept changing around.

Having a consistent product is so important for tv.

That’s a great post Deb.

Probably your most positive one yet.

You are becoming the most negative poster on D/L.

Always looking at the negative side of any thing the AFL and sometimes very often the Dees as well.

Dare you to change at least now until the season starts!!

As mentioned above, Carlton and Bulldogs drew the short straw in 2023.

Us and Essendon have drawn the short straw next year.

Two other clubs will draw the short straw in 2025.

I personally don’t see the issue.

Some posters can’t see any thing positive at all.

Wait until he sees we play the Swans in Round1 in Sydney as well.

As a result we should probably expect Rounds 2 and 3 at the G one at least a blockbuster!

Dare the AFL to send us to the Cattery instead to take on the Cats in front of their 40,000 sellout crowds now achievable!!

AFL 2024 Fixture out this Thursday 16th. All our fears will be revealed!!

At least Jackson avoids the Boo Boys again

Round 12
Sunday, June 2
Melbourne v Fremantle
TIO Traeger Park

Like others I'm getting a bit over the Alice game, but obviously the club needs the $750K or whatever it is these days.

Pleasing that we have an 8 day break into the following week as opposed to the usual 6 day break we have after Alice.

And given how we've fared against Freo the last two year at the MCG, it might be a blessing to play them in Alice rather than at the G.

I have no problem with 1 game a year in Alice. Quite like it in fact. We have a longish history there now and a growing fan base as well. We have done some good work there of which I'm proud of the club for.

Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and applaud the club for instigating projects like the Santa Teresa Oval Project as well other positive community work.

I hate Thursday nights. If we’re playing it’s tough enough to watch it on TV, let alone get there if it’s in Melbourne. I’m sure ratings were solid, there’s nothing else to watch, but the question IMO is whether fans like it when their own club plays on a Thursday.

Couldn't agree more.

Most people I know like Thurs night footy for the TV aspect and something to do but very few of them are prepared to go to the G on a Thurs night and do the whole nine yards with transport, crowds, expenses etc.

I'm sure there are people here that are happy to go on Thurs night and the TV ratings are great but I personally don't like it.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
