A lot of people seem to have missed that the umpire, who sees thousands of ‘football acts’ a week, and was the closest official to the incident, immediately reported Maynard.

The bloke whose job it is to oversee the rules was 10 metres away and reported him. That tells you everything.

I think the MRO was going to be overhauled anyway, and this will give them the impetus to do it. I’d be shocked if Christian is in that role next year.

Can't believe Christian didn't refer it to the tribunal, he obviously can't be neutral when it has anything to do with Collingwood.

Ex-Collingwood player trying to look after his own.

Makes me sick the number of Collingwood people standing up for the thug. Buckley comes to mind. What would he be saying if Maynard played for another team?

And all of the Collingwood 'friendlies' - a fair portion of the media that have been sucking up to Collingwood for the past 12 months and continue to do so.

Yes! This is the first time that I have heard that Maynard was reported. Why has this blindingly obvious piece of evidence only been revealed now?!?!

Channelling my inner BBO: you mean Burwood? 😄😆🤣

@Redleg 'So despite a report on the ground by an umpire, close to the incident and the fact that a player had been knocked out for 2 minutes, with his career and health impacted, Christian attempted to whitewash the whole incident and not even have it tested by the Tribunal.'

Spiking the umpires report is the deal breaker for me, the MRO is supposed to be for incidents caught on telly. An immediate direct report by the umpire carries serious weight, the fact that the media was overlooking this with all the commentary from former 'thugs hard men', goes to some serious jury tampering. The umpire being close and with a good view is highly relevant.

Have seen some media is starting to pick up on the shoulder as a separate action to the smother.

So seriously, MC can really GAGF, don't want to hear from him again, and the MRO needs to be rejigged.

And serious props to Laura Kane, past her 1st test in the big chair, stone killer to face down the pressure around this.

Agreed!

Sack him now!

Disgusting Collingwood bias!

I want Michael Christian's head on a [censored] plate! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

I have had an enlightening read on some bikkie club up in the Hume region tonight . I am happy to transport Mr Christian to this club for his deeds this past week. 😂🔫🛵🧑‍🦼

Surely the MRO not being trusted with a decision and being immediately overruled should be enough for him to be sacked

Christian - for crimes against the AFL, and general incompetence, you are sentenced to 5 years out of the game. The MRO will be disbanded, to be replaced by the psychic octopus from the World Cup

Psychic octopus is sooo 2010s.

Replace him with an AI bot.

Michael Christian's position as MRO is completely untenable now, I expect him to have his desk cleaned out by the end of the week.

It was said on couch that he would put his job on the line and it took 5 hours of discussion to reach a compromise.

I highly doubt he will be there next year.

So he was willing to quit rather than apply a suspension? He knew how this would look so what was the compromise, the referral to the tribunal? This is just amateur hour, the fact the AFL let one buffoon control the decisions for so long is farcical, especially when he has a clear club allegiance. Now, all in football will but you mitigate that by not having a sole arbiter.

Can you imagine the outcry if Viney had done this to Nick Daicos?? He would be looking at 6 weeks.

It is has been accepted fact around ethics for awhile now that even a perception of a conflict of interest is as much a concern as an actual conflict of interest, that he doesn't get that is a serious red flag.

I think the fact Laura Kane’s name is included in the statement is telling and add to that it took hours, until after the nightly News opportunities for a decision to be announced. I suspect Laura put up a very strong and long argument for the decision against significant opposition from the usual old guard.

yes, it got explained on fc tonight in so much detail it couldn't have been guesswork

gill, dill, and laura forced it, though whether their motives were pure or just optics was unclear

what a hopeless, compromised lot.

Not in the match report on the AFL app either

Yes, Laura is a breath of fresh air

And Christian putting his own job on the line is weird.  What was he worried about?

Is he that biased towards Collingwood and if so, how on earth can he hold such an important position for so long?  Bizarre

Caro mentioned that Gil & Dillon wanted the case to go straight to the tribunal as well

What compromise is there? It’s not some political legislation negotiation. That’s bizarre.

To allow just one individual to wield so much power reeks of bad governance in the first place. The AFL board needs to be held accountable for allowing this to happen.

Because it was unhelpful to the Pies       ( footy act ) media narrative.

Contrast this incident with the Hunter suspension, where Hunter just stood still and Butters went low, sliding into his hip and the Tribunal said he should have jumped out of the way and then Butters continued on playing, to get 43 possies, in the best game of his life.

It’s like a scratch compared to a nuclear blast and people are actually suggesting the scratch was worse.

If you were really channeling your inner BBO you’d say Borewood 😁

Imagine if May crashed into a Nick Daicos calibre player and knocked him out cold well after kicking the ball.

Christian would  go ballistic.

Severe impact High Contact. Straight to the tribunal for May.

Maynard?   "errrr   nothing to answer for ". Next case  JVR youre a Melb player, 1 week.  f  you.

No coincidence she is a lawyer.

And leaving the legal dimension aside, as football manager she knows that the white noise of ex footballers and media that only care about numbers (viewers, listeners, clicks, mentions etc etc) is a dangerous furphy in terms of the future of the game.

The 'optics' on this could not be worse. Particularly given the success of the Matildas at the world cup and the buzz they will generate at the Paris Olympics.

How many parents of young boys and girls will want their kids to play a sport that gives short thrift to serious head trauma?

Kane has earned my respect that's for sure (not that i didn't respect her before).

He's no Christian, fancy not referring this to the tribunal, should have fallen on his Sword the second Laura came off the top turn buckle and stamped her authority.

Complete biase shown toward his former club.

AFL step in and sack the sorry💩.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
