Max Gawn deserves to win another flag. He is arguably the best player I’ve ever seen play for Melbourne.

A god amongst mere mortals. His [censored] plays better football than Mason “I’m a yank thug” Cox.

100% a Yank thug and a sook !!!!

Langdon takes the easy out option now and he doing it more and more.

I am so frustrated with this loss.  Seems yet another wasted opportunity.  No real connection in the forward line and looks like we lose Roo.  But, I cannot understand why we re-signed Schache.  A former number 2 in the national draft, us being his third club, he clearly is not up to standard and as a result, we don't select him to play, when we are in desperate need of forwards.

Yet we select a bloke that has only played 2 VFL games in 4 months.  I have the utmost respect for TMac, but sadly, I think the game has passed him by.

We have seen the lack of separation in our forward line several times this year, yet we dominated inside 50's last night.  Surely our coaches can come up with a better plan that what we appear to have at the moment.  So bloody annoyed.

I can see us going with Grundy 60% of Time rucking and Max 60 % forward

I'd drop Langdon and bring in Woey!

Brayshaw - unmercifully cleaned up

Neal - Bullen - joeboy book specsavers

Nibbler was good. Not fantastic but one of the few who applied enormous  pressure throughout the whole game.

I would bring in JJ for Gus and Grundy for JVR, Tomlinson to bolster Backline and Woewodin or Spargo to replace  Laurie, Grundy CHF to ruck forward line and rough up opposition.!!

The best bit about that is that Max can play behind the ball when he's not rucking.

It's not as if he's a gun forward himself

Whoever was supposed to be anywhere near Jack Crisp for the night was our worst player. He absolutely slaughtered us with work out of stoppage and created at least 5 scores that I counted.

Rivers - Feature article curse

where was the feature - I won't have much to do by next week!

I'm jus feelin negative - Goddy's job to turn boys' attitude around and then mine will follow

I know that the Pies came out breathing fire and tried (successfully) to intimidate and rough us up but ffs, this was a QF, what were our guys thinking? We did not begin the game in a manner befitting a QF, they did.

Coaches and players were in dream land for the first 45 minutes. Inexcusable.

It was a worry to hear that Mark Williams was heard having to yell at the players to lift the standards during the open training session.  Surely this is the tine of year to be razor focused and sharp in training, warm-ups and then carry that to the opening bounce.

If Stafford had Petty and Melksham we'd be fine. We're asking him to turn water into wine.

Our fwds don’t move. They stand there like ruckman asking for it to be bombed in.

Gawn - an Herculean effort

Viney - quiet after first

Petracca - amazing second half

Oliver - many irrelevant possessions

May - passion and heart

Lever - had little input

 Bowey - an important game

Rivers - was surprisingly quiet

Salem - slow and loose

McVee - often out positioned

Smith - had limited opportunities

McDonald - needed more involvement

vanRooyen - will be suspended

Fritsch - still wearing moonboot

Pickett - an almost game

Neal-Bullen - was rarely sighted

Sparrow - better second half

Chandler - little to praise

Hunter - slow decision making

Hibberd - slow but tight

Laurie - was seemingly overwhelmed

Langdon - better second half

Maybe 6 of our players played well, our goalkicking was bad, and we only lose by 7 points!

We don’t need much improvement to beat the Pies!!

Maybe you should watch the game without the red and blue glasses on, watch the difference between Sidebottom and Langdon when caught between running at the player and allowing the overlap, easy option or Sidebottom does not go forward or back it creates uncertainty with the ball player and not allow the overlap, Langdon plays boundary side a majority of the time now, did not always do the in 2021.

Maybe you should be respectful of Sidebottom

my point is not that the red and blue can do no wrong

it’s that you have to be right on your game to beat the best and too often we here ignore the quality of the opposition and see only the faults of our players

I am not disrespecting Sidebottom I am pointing out that Langdon is taking an easy option every time now and Hunter is doing the same, cheap giveaway kicks and handballs that don't help the side and they are always playing boundary side, but everyone has their point of view and that's fine.

Looked second rate.

We are not second rate, we need to get our heads out of our bums, most of our good players didn't look that good the other night...but I'm pretty sure they still are.

I think for the most part there is a lot of accuracy here. For me Anb was pretty good. Sparrow had an absolute shocking first half whicH made his night less than average. Petracca a little similiar  but incredible second half.

Which makes it all so frustrating tHat we lost by 7 points.

Half a game by way too many and the usual rubbish kicking into 50 and at goals as well.

Maybe one day we will come out with some intent from the start and make it easier for ourselves.

Imagine if we played well all night.

We'd probably be in a gf this year.

Now just like our catch up footy we've played all year, it's catch up finals.

Of all nights for Jv to go missing this one was a bummer . But he's been incredible all year. I don't think Sparrow will ever really make it. Shows some glimpses . Chandler even less so. Kozzie is way too hot and cold. Salem is lost or sick. Lever spends too much time directing others. Laurie was a huge coaching error. Tmac well in by default.  Hopefully will retire. Langdon has done little this year.

Congrats to May, Max, and Bowey who kept us in it. I would mention Trac but there is something wrong with him lately. He's clearly a champion with 32 touches. But about 75 percent of them came in the 2nd half. Too late. It's been a strange pattern for some time now and difficult to understand why.

I guess the upside is we almost beat the minor premiers with only a few playing their best.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.

After five consecutive defeats, the Demons have now notched up back-to-back victories, comfortably accounting for the Tigers in the traditional ANZAC Eve clash. They surged to a commanding 44-point lead early in the final quarter before easing off the pedal, resting skipper Max Gawn and conceding the last four goals of the game to close out a solid 20-point win.
