Of course he did.

We are having a seriously good year on the injury front.

No doubt Gawn, Trac and Clarry will somehow all fall into a well this week.

In Grundy, Jordon, Spargo

Out JVR, Brayshaw, Laurie

Not much else you can do.

What does this mean?

I'm not qualified to comment because I haven't seen the game, but my musings are:

  • If JVR gets suspended, we probably have no choice. but to keep TMac irrespective of how bad he was
  • We have to pick either Schache or Grundy to replace JVR if he gets suspended, or likely to replace TMac if JVR doesn't get suspended
  • You'd think Jordon gets Brayshaw's spot
  • I'm a long way from convinced that Laurie is good enough to be in the side and I don't think he makes a good sub. Perhaps Woey could add some pace to the side as the sub?
  • We appear to have a problem with Salem's form but the only option we had to make a change there just got concussed and can't play next week

Any chance JVR can get away with a fine?

If it's deemed careless and low impact he can get away with a fine.

If it's deemed careless and medium impact then it's 1 week.

If it's deemed intentional and medium then it's 2 weeks.

It was an in play incident so hopefully they'll deem it careless rather than intentional.

Who impressed?

Just got it from someone who was there watching.  We lost by a pt also but I didn’t really ask any other questions.  I also don’t know if Harmes injury was serious or not.

Hard to see a better team from what is left at Casey.

Next Friday's weather is showing as warm (24) and fine

If Carlton I'd be including Tomlinson. Perhaps Turner if Sydney

Forward... like the selection committee... I'm bereft of ideas

Unfortunately our first half was foreshadowed by our pre-game warmup. I have never seen our players fumble, drop marks or stuff up as many kicks in that warm up in my time watching us, even when we were really rubbish! I get that it was still fairly greasy/wet at that stage but to me they just didn't seem switched on or thought it was 23c and sunny!

Don't worry about our forward line issues. Goodwin and the team will take many learnings and work on their forward line connection. As I have heard the players say on multiple occasions, if we bring the contest and defence, the forward line will take care of itself. It's just a shame that Goodwin must have such a complicated forward line gameplan that it is taking the players the best part of 3 years now to try to understand it. Either that or his plan is to kick high to the pockets inside 50 so that we can get a stoppage. We then play 2 men back so we are undermanned in the forward line stoppage and wonder why the opposition gets it out so easy but then we get it back to do the same thing all over again. Unfortunately, we could have a forward line of Leigh Matthews, John Coleman and Tony Lockett, there is no way that plan would even let them kick goals, but hey, Goody knows best so get off his back everyone!

I just think our whole game plan which we always hear is based on repeat forward entries is flawed.

No need to get a repeat entry if you kick a goal.

Correct, what we actually need is I50 effectiveness.

Regardless of how much inside 50 we get, we must make the most of it.

Our gameplan should be to lock the ball inside 50 and generate as many goals as possible.

Out: Van Rooyen, Brayshaw, Laurie, Salem, McDonald

In: Turner/Tomlinson, Spargo, Jordan, Grundy, Schache

B - Hibberd, May, Tomlinson

HB - McVee, Lever, Rivers

C - Langdon, Viney, Hunter

HF - Chandler, Schache, Pickett

F - Neal-Bullen, Fritsch, Grundy

RUCK - Gawn, Oliver, Petracca

INT - Harmes, Bowey, Sparrow, Spargo

23rd - Jordan

IN: Tomlinson, Spargo, Grundy, Jordan
OUT: Laurie (sub), Gus, Rooey, Chandler
SUB: Hibbo

Ineffective forward entry has been our issue for years.. Long bombing into a pack needs to stop!

Goody's choice to play a unproven fifth gamer baffles me..

Salem definitely should be dropped. The game has well and truly passed him by unfortunately.

Prob a bit extreme. More so to do with his pre season illness.

I wasn't there last night (I live in WA), but your comment sparked a memory from the 2018 Prelim final vs the Eagles. I noticed this exact thing during the warm up to that game, fumbly, nervous players looked beaten before the national anthem had even been sung.

We didn't play well - and lost by a goal. Fritta or Koz kick what is usually regulation for them in the last and who knows. So, let's not throw the baby out.

Gus and I suspect JVR will go out.
JJ in for midfield balance, Turner in. Smaller forward line, partly because we don't have much else, and partly because we have to learn how to use the ball better going in.

Tracc more forward minutes. Possibly Spargo as Sub for Laurie who looked overwhelmed. Charlie only need 4 kicks forward to make a difference, and because he can't bomb it our players separate better for him.

So if games go with the favourites

We'll play The Blues next Friday

Then Lions away the Sat after?

Spot on!

Or better still, we will be playing the Semi Final next Friday night and the Preliminary Final the following Saturday twilight if we make it - both time slots regardless of who our opposition is.

Too many changes

I think Schache has to come in. At least he’s a reliable set shot. Grundy into the side and moving Gawn forward will tempt the mids to bomb in long again. We brought Grundy in against Carlton last time and couldn’t even crack 60pts.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.
