The opening bounce set the standard early, Cox went straight at Max knees up and he went down like a sack of spuds looking for the free kick. They out worked us and out pressured us and it was embarrassing. 

Apparently we have a game built for finals and are the toughest team in the comp yet we're about to be bundled out in straight sets for the second year on the trot.

Same boat here mate. I want to stop but can't look away as the outrage is still simmering. That fans let their club allegiances undermine human decency is the worst part of sport. 

Line up any of these 'fans', or their family members in the way that Maynard did Brayshaw and they'll take you to court (if they could afford it). 

As for the Goodwin presser, what did he say that's so offensive? The facts literally were that he left the ground and knocked a guy out? It's hard to believe that people's brains have the capacity to misconstrue such a simple sentence

Wow ... so disappointing.

A few random thoughts.

The slow starts are diabolical. It cost us the match. The filth could have been even further ahead at qtr time ... they missed a few sitters.

The filth looked more skilful. They hit targets more often, and fumbled less.

When Langdon was being well beaten by Sidebottom, the coach should have switched wingers. If Gus hadn't been assaulted, he may have been shifted onto him.

Overall most of our boys were well down on their best form. Not sure why that was. 

One thing that is apparent is that the filth are definitely 'gettable'.

Just when I thought I couldn't hate the filth more ...

I think he may have been a handy foil for Cox, but you are right: where does that leave Max? Perhaps floating around the fwd taking marks or halving contests (or drawing attention).

We got away with a couple of blatant throws but even with the frees going out way I thought there were some shocking decisions against us. That's not even mentioning the typical Oliver/Petracca getting scragged around contests, players getting blocked out of marking contest, Gawn being blocked trying to run downfield etc etc

Clubs keep doing it because the AFL let's them get away with it, then they wonder why the game looks like a scrap.

Cox literally held and blocked for a whole.quarter of footy. The we get called for blocking when our player was further away from the contest that the player we supposedly blocked!

How far will some players go to win a grandfinal.

I 100% agree. An act like that should see that player sent off.

watching Moore play on McDonald.... slow motion train wreck. He is not up to it now or in the future. Good servant though

We lost it in the first, we kicked poorly against them, but our entries into the 50 were horrible too. 

I don't see how we compete strongly next week with an even more compromised forward line against the Blues.  That said I'll be cheering for the Swans!

No, both of our finals last year were our home games. Last night was a Collingwood home game as decided by ladder position. On the subject though, their halftime, qtr time and 3qtr time “entertainment “ was as lame as you’ll ever see, especially the stupid “hot pies vs hot chips” thing. Spend some money ffs, CFC.

This was predicted to be a close one.

Strangely the first half showed otherwise with the Pies much more effective with disposal.

We had another slippery  night.

The second half wasn't close at all either. We dominated and had almost twice the fwd entries.

An experienced player down replaced by a very inexperienced kid made a big difference too.

I think we have gotten to think of tge sub as a last quarter tool to inject some fresh legs and speed. Not what it was designed for. Bad call Goody 

We had many more scoring shots and couldn't win. Goal kicking issues arnothing new for us.

Happened in KB too.

Because it was their home game.

There should be no home games in finals. You get the home ground advantage, but beyond that it should be neutral.

I hate all this pre and during game entertainment anyway. It is loud, obnoxious and completely irritating.

Please some music at a normal level, call out the players names pre-game (I do like that because it gets the crowd going), and just leave us in peace during breaks.

Selfish? Why would he play selfishly? For individual glory? Coz he doesn’t rate his teammates? Call him selfish but please explain (bearing in mind that playing selfishly is a choice) not what acts you deem selfish but WHY you think he’d play selfishly.

I had the misfortune of having to travel during the game last night, so I had to follow online and read Demonland and media articles post-match to get a sense of what happened.

There appear to me to have been two clear issues contributing to the loss - the start of the match, and our subsequent failure to capitalise on our contest/territory dominance.

Both frustrate me. In the first quarter were were -9 for CPs, -2 for inside 50s and -5 for scoring shots. That's precisely how we don't want to play, but that's what we brought at the start. It put us 4 goals down and meant we had to play catch up football, and against probably the best side in the league at defending inside 50s, catch up football is tough. 

The forward half stuff is unfortunately not going to improve personnel-wise. It just hasn't been our year for this - the Petty and Melksham injuries, Fritsch missing a massive chunk, TMac's fitness, Brown's fitness, etc. Imagine if in the pre-season someone had suggested we'd line up on 7 September in a QF with a forward line featuring JVR, Smith, TMac, Laurie and Chandler. Goodwin and the coaches did well to make it work with Petty, and then after his injury too, but we just don't have the options to plumb down to Plan D or E or whatever we're up to now.

Brayshaw's injury was hugely damaging by robbing our forward line of Trac. Sadly, at this stage, we cannot afford for Trac to not be a majority forward.

Our contest and defence keeps us in every game (what's our combined losing margin across our 8 losses this year, 77 points or something?) but this muddled forward line makes hauling in elite sides (Collingwood is elite, whether you like it or not) very difficult, if not impossible.

As to the Maynard incident - what @Binmans PA (and others) seem to have overlooked is that the table of offences/penalties only applies to reportable offences. Incidents don't get penalised if they're not considered unreasonable.

A classic example is JVR on Ballard earlier this year. Plugging it into the table gets you a suspension, and indeed that's what the MRO initially did. But he got off because it was a football action gone wrong.

The argument here is that Maynard was trying to block/smother, and it went wrong. I get that argument. I've watched the footage dozens of times though, and IMO he seems to turn into Brayshaw - this is common in players who try to block/smother on the ground, they will then look to check/block the run of the kicker to stop them linking up further. IMO, that's what Maynard does, but because of his momentum he does it with way, way, too much force.

So IMO, I think it's a reportable offence, and then in the table it's straight to the tribunal (careless, high, severe).

But I understand the argument against, which is what Collingwood will argue if it does go to the tribunal, and I don't think it's clear-cut either way.

"Bog ordinary" list? They have N Daicos, J Daicos, Moore, De Goey, Quaynor, Howe, Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Elliot, Crisp, Adams and Mitchell. The first three were All Australian this year. The next two were in the squad.

You're not the only one guilty of this as it's rampant on Demonland - hyping up our list and downplaying those of our opponents to strengthen your argument that our 2023 season (and 2022) is nothing short of a disaster.

Collingwood's list compares favourably to ours. So does Brisbane's. And Port's. And Carlton's. We aren't far enough in front of these sides for it to be "unbelievable" that two of them might play in this year's GF instead of us.

On TV it seems like a far bigger domination than it looked like in person. Pies seem to [censored] themselves at every single contest. Some of their goals... my god. They had at least 6 goals from turnovers I reckon. And they weren't even high pressure turnovers. Mostly from our F50 entries.

Goodwin says we played good for 3 quarters. I know he's trying to keep a positive face but gee whiz if we play like that against Carlton it is straight sets comfortably. They will mop us up. We quite literally dominate around the ground until the flanks at which point we become slow, unsure... every single entry seems 1-2 seconds late. We lacked dare and pace going forward and it is so evident on TV. Carlton's defense is very good, they are very well matched against us.

We have absolutely blown a home Prelim here, make no mistake. Last night was a team spooked early on, and then a team that choked late. They fought hard but that is a very tough loss to swallow.

I watched it and yes I was moore p*eed off than I was last night.

When we moved the ball quickly we looked a different side. WTF is this waiting with the ball for the opposition to flood back?

And Dangerfield (I think) made a good point that Coll would wait (if we flooded back) chip the ball around and force our players to come out of defence to man up. Their fwd line seemed so much more open.

The number of times they streamed through the corridor made my blood boil. But they [censored] their pants when we came at them in the last. Instead of 4 OOF imagine Kozzie or Fritsch goaling. The game would have turned on its head.

A very poor loss last night because it was all due to poor decision making and basic skill errors. We only have ourselves to blame. The loss of Gus cost us the game compounded by the inexplicable choice of Laurie as the sub - we were left with 3 small forwards and a lack of rotation in the midfield. Langdon’s  missed goal after taking advantage was schoolboy stuff and worthy of being dropped. Hunter has become a turnover specialist and Salem’s lack of intensity and hunger for the contest is unacceptable. He needs to have a look at the way Bowza plays. Overall we have too many fade outs during games and start poorly. Hard to see us coming back from here, especially now Gus is likely to be out for the rest of the finals - he is so important to our structure and his value is underestimated.

The “entertainment” noise was so loud that you cannot have a conversation with the person next to you.I hate it. And it happens at our home games saw well.

What gets me is the whole competition knows Gus is a concussion survivor and plays on a wing and prayer and is the one player you dont deliberately knock out. Maynard knows Gus and knows this well. 4 weeks.
