Nic was on a footy show on Thursday night that l don’t normally watch. He said that he was one of the top draft pick and thought he was going to be selected by Melbourne. But we picked J Watts. He was glad because he got to stay on Perth with the Eagles.I wonder what would have happened if We picked him first?

Probably would have run back home to Perth at the first opportunity

We would have cooked him. We won the flag in 2021 because we didn't pick him.

If we had tanked properly that year we could have had Watts and Nic.

But seriously, things panned out okay. Nic would not have taken us to an earlier premiership.

Darren burgess would have got him into shape

We would have become a quarter of the player he turned out to be instead of half the player he was.

Agree. He’s one that to me always seemed like he was well short of having a good tank.

Seriously opened this thread expecting something outrageous like we’re gonna rookie him next year.

Clearly I have over-indulged myself this afternoon.

I know a bit more about this from an insider, someone who lives in Perth and is close to the Naitanui family. I was reliably told he was desperate to be drafted to an interstate / Victorian club because he wanted space from those around him, and ideally, Collingwood. if that's the case, i'd say he's saying this to suit the situation.

A lot of talk about him being out of shape and/or unfit during his career, some even suggesting he was fat. But I think it’s a genetic predisposition, and is therefore unalterable.

I don’t think he was too fat, I reckon he was too muscular for the position he played. Like Trac was earlier in his career, in order for him to become the midfielder he is now he had to shed some muscle mass.

I don’t know about the interstate/Victorian club rumour but I know he told Melbourne that he wasn’t interested in playing for us at all and if we picked him, he would have come back to Perth at the first opportunity.

(also, TF this thread wasn’t someone suggesting we rookie him).

We would have taken Patrick Cripps in 2013 instead of Christian Salem and BT would famously say "Nic Nac Paddy Whack" during a centre clearance goal.

I’m glad we didn’t take him. He would have been just a prequel to Scully. Stay for 2 years then leave.

We all know Watts never lived up to his potential, but I’ve often wondered if shipping him off due to his lack of professionalism sent a message to the group which led to mass buy-in from this group on professionalism. I also think with Watts’ lack of competitiveness, the recruiting staff made that a real focus for future picks. So all in all, I wouldn’t change a thing as we might not have had the 2021 flag.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
