Improved their draft hand slightly in the latter half of the draft to increase their involvement without losing a lot. Jay Rantall represents strong value as a basketball convert with elite endurance who does his best work inside winning the contested ball, distributing by hand and moving through traffic. Oakleigh premiership captain Trent Bianco is a second selection who represents strong value as one of the best kicks in the draft and the most advanced outside player in the pool. Trey Ruscoe at 192cm with his versatility to play defence, midfield or forward, is a third solid selection with his skills, mobility, ball winning capabilities and the way he reads the ball in flight and takes marks. Though the question of whether Collingwood should have retained pick 51 to draft key forward Jake Riccardi rather than trade it to GWS who used the pick to draft the VFL's Fothergill-Round-Mitchell Medal is a question that will be asked given Collingwood's lacking key position stocks.

Grade: A

None of those 3 players are today on an AFL list.

In the same draft he gave Melbourne a C for drafting Jackson, Pickett and Rivers, which was his equal worst ranking.

Outside of the Suns, who had picks one and two, Melbourne clearly were the best performed club in that 2019 draft.

Picks (at start of draft): 9, 43, 57, 70, 85

Selections: Brodie Kemp (17), Sam Philp (20), Sam Ramsay (47)

Stephen Silvagni was making plenty of moves on the opening night of the draft, with a bidding frenzy causing Fremantle and GWS to move on Liam Henry and Tom Green respectively. Brodie Kemp was the big steal for the Blues, landing the potential top-five prospect with Pick 17. They added more midfield speed with the selection of snubbed Vic Metro prospect Sam Philp. Calder Cannons midfield Sam Ramsey rounded out their selections, with the inside midfielder averaging 25.2 disposals this year.

Grade: A
 
Only the 23 gamer Kemp remains in the system notwithstanding the A they were given.
 
This is supposedly a ''shallow'' draft, but to me, albeit a novice, it looks as good as just about any year and the top end talent better than most.

    How can they call themselves a Draft expert if they aren't across the players? Do they just have really in depth knowledge of how the draft works?

    Pick 2 comes after pick 1, but before pick 3. Oh my word, I'm a draft expert!

    all draft prognosticators seem to read each other's coverage and fall into confirmation bias

    Here is another scenario.

    If Curtin is there at 6, we trade it for WC F1 and it would get us Ben King, if he left GC next year.

    Then if possibly Petty insists on a trade home, we pick up a couple of first rounders to go with our own and we are back in next year's draft in a big way, or in a great position for further trading.

    Fun and games coming up over the next 24 hours.

    If we are keen on Reid and Windsor, could we give all our picks and future 1 to WC, who give their F1 for 7 and GWS F1 and we get 1 and 7 and get Reid and Windsor and then we delist say Woey and Laurie if they are agreeable, who go to WC in Pre Season Draft and/or Supplemental draft. Woey goes home and is probably a certainty for a rebuilding WC and Laurie gets games. Jed Adams or even Spargo could come into the conversation.

    That would mean for example we get 1 and 7.

    WC get 6, 11, 42, 78 and MFC F1 and GWS F1 and say Woey and Laurie, who would both be starting 23 for WC immediately. 6 appears certain to get Curtin, a future Captain by all accounts.

    Yeah. 1, it's draft tampering. You can't delist guys just so another team can pick them up for draft picks. That's what the trade period is for, and there's no way the AFL will let it through.

    2, no way do we get 1 and 7 for 6, 11, 42 and our F1. And WC won't give up 1 and their future first for 6, 11 and what are likely to be 2 other late first round picks next year.

    3, Woey is a father/son. You don't do that to F/S picks

    Missing your meds?

    We’ve offered everything we’ve got for Reid and it’s been knocked back.

    Delisting 1-4 fringe players to get pick 7, apart from being completely infeasible is not something the Eagles would be interested in. If they’re trading their future first it’s to get Curtin for themselves.

    Curtin, Sanders, Windsor, Leake, O’Sullivan and Watson

    At pick 11 (13/14). Preference remains 

    O’Sullivan, Windsor, Wilson, Tholstrup and Murphy

    Current plan appears Windsor (6) then Tholstrup (11) but I wonder if we look at a different type of player with pick 11 if we manage to get Watson in earlier?

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
