FWIW I agree with the sentiment but I just can’t see a way it can be done.

Firstly, we didn't have the draft capital last year.

Secondly, the silly part is to think that one of us should be able to see how a move up the order can be achieved as Demonland posters.

Our chances are moving up are much higher than last year, given our hand. And I'm hoping we can move into the top 10 and see a very real possibility of that happening, without knowing all avenues.

I don't think for one minute it is silly to assume this, especially given our track record.

And how successful were we in moving up the draft last year to get into the top 10.

Cobblers need tools and suggesting they should do something without them is silly. Why suggest something when you don’t seem to know how it might be achieved?

Unlike last year we have the draft capital, our future 1st pick in 2024 included, to go after higher picks - this year's 7 and 10.

Bringing a wave of 3 talented top-end players into our list now sets us up for the remainder of the decade.

You're suggesting we upgrade 5 AND get 2 more top 10 picks with 13, a F1st which should be in the teens, and a bunch of 2nd and 3rd rounders. It's just not feasible IMO. @Slartibartfast is entitled to an "how?"

Give us a scenario ...

Well, I think we threw 3 first rounders at Suns but they didn't bite.

To me saying "I want three picks inside the top 10" is the same as "why don't we go and get Bont".  Nice sentiment but it's just not going to happen.  And saying we have the draft capital this year is a bit of a guess as we don't know what we'll get for Grundy or even if he'll be traded.  I doubt the trade for Harmes will help us.

As I said, like you I want as many low picks as possible.  Why not make it 4 with pick 1 thrown in for good measure?

Let the cobbler's cobble.

Both those players are as good as any. Sanders uses the ball well. He is class. O’Sullivan is a big athletic key back, with sticky hands. Any of those guys could get top 5

We need more of these....

It's really annoying me that North got these late 1st round picks as part of their handout. It's going to be difficult to match what they can offer in terms of moving up to 10 or 7. I would've thought receiving pick 3 compo was more than enough.

Damn right. The AFL have royally stuffed up here.

I saw Will Gould was delisted by Sydney.

I remember looking at him as a later pick in his draft year until Sydney nabbed him.

Was in a man’s body playing at U18 level, so don’t know why he didn’t go on?

Maybe just a good SANFL player now.

So far we should save around $1.6 in wages across Grundy, Hibbo, Harmesy, Dunstan and JJ leaving, with circa $500k in spending in prospective McAdam and Fullerton.  Probably $1.1m salary cap space by my calculations.  Given cap is rising also, Dees must look at 2024 Free agent list and start talking to managers as soon as they are allowed.

The departures of Hibbo, Harmes and Dunstan would have been factored in when we re-signed our stars. We probably factored in Melksham leaving until he had a resurrection.

But unless our cap is really tight, we should be in the market for a free agent next year.

Yes,

AND Brown, T Mac and Tomlinson come off the books end of next year.

So, could we go hard for GWS Pick 7 and Haynes in a salary dump deal now?

I don’t think JJ, Hibbo and Dunstan were sharing $450k. Grundy $650k and Harmes $500k. So saving greater at this stage I would think.

Melbourne next could have Daniel Curtin and forward Nate Caddy in the mix. Tall defender Connor O'Sullivan is expected to be in the next group and could be an option for Greater Western Sydney with its top-10 pick

Cal’s been with McKercher and Duursma to North for a while.

And the Hawks linked to Duursma or Watson chasing forward half talent.

Which then leaves Sanders to the Dogs.

The ‘could’ means he’s probably not as sold on our intentions yet, but I reckon Cal is starting to piece together the top 5 barring trades.

I've said this somewhere perhaps a few pages back but happy to repeat.

We have 6,14,27,35.

25 - Grundy trade (TBC)
51 - JJ comp
52 - Harmes trade

1. 14+25 to Cats for Pick 8. They have one whole pick for the draft with a list that is aging chronically.

2. F1 (~1000 pts) + 2nd rounders (35,41,52 - 1180 pts) for GCS Pick 11 (1329). given them silly points, but are competing with Norf atm.

At this point we could have 6,8,11,27

Additional Considerations/Options

3. Chase Nick Haynes and take full salary (1.2-1.5M) for their Pick 7. Or take a portion of it for Pick 16 or as much as GWS is willing for their Pick 42.

4. Package up any two of 6,8,11 to move higher into the draft. Given the current run of play, I think its pretty set and nobody would be willing to do anything their.

5. Split Pick 27 if required when matching any bids for Brown for a F2 and 3rd rounder (and split again until Brown is matched)

Trade for gc pick 11

get in curtain or O’Sullivan pick 6

Darcy Wilson pick 11

Throlstrop pick 14

powerful big halfforward types who are aggressive and good kicks.

And a big defender to take over from may and let petty go forward for good

Sanders and O’Sullivan. You’re right though, despite having a high pick we look likely to miss out on the elite crop unless we can trade up further. Mckercher is exactly what need in our midfield now.

Sanders would be great but won't he be gone by our 7?

Nice try but it's way short of Jimmy's dream.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
