I think the Rules you are referring to have been rewritten. The Rule you quote is the 2011 version, there is a 2016 version and there may even be later that I couldn't find.

Of course, any rule can be overridden by an AFL press release at any time , retrospectively if Gil thinks it is a good idea. ( half joking )

*Management reserves the right to change the rules before, during or after each game, including in its interpretation of video footage and how it may or may not be applied, subject to the vibe.

This game should be on Friday night. Terrible scheduling again by the VFL.

You mean a Casey final at the same time as the AFLW Premiers season launch match?

Yes. Playing on Saturday means a 5 day break to the AFL final. The VFL is the competition under the AFL not AFLW.

Possible side:

B: D.Smith, Tomlinson, Freeman

HB: Buntine, Adams, Edwards

C: Steele, Harmes, Woewodin

HF: Moniz-Wakefield, Schache, Laurie

Brodie Grundy 17/4
James Harmes 9/9
Michael Hibberd 11/4 *

Josh Schache   2/15
Sestan Oliver 0/16 *

Joel Smith 12/5
Charlie Spargo 13/ 7
Adam Tomlinson 8/9
Daniel Turner 2/10
Kye Turner 0/5

Jacob van Rooyen 0/3
Will Verrall 0/8
Taj Woewoedin 4/12

Players in red bold seem to be eligible to play this weekend

Players in red bold with an asterisk * seem to be eligible to play but are on our injury list

Players in blue bold seem not to be eligible to play

It seems to me that it would make sense if players could be deemed eligible to play on application by the club if special circumstances applied e.g. player genuinely returning after an injury.

Considering we are still playing I can't see this rule being enforced. D.Turner won't play only a 5 day break. Laurie considering he only played a half may play. Wouldn't be surprised if we rested all of Laurie, Woewodin, Jordon and Harmes in the last quarter to a quarter and a half. Whoever is the best out of that 4 becomes the sub. McDonald won't play either as he will replace Melksham and it's only a 5 day break.

Reckon you may be having a lend Kev!  A HUGE NO to Fritta.  As many have suggested already.... cotton wool job till he runs out on the night!

Macca...similar to Fritta.  If it wasn't a final, possibly.  Regardless he is more than likely to get the call up to replace Smith who will probably return as the sub.

A half for Hibbo would be a handy warm up if they're looking for him to come in to cover Elliot.  If not then there's no reason why he couldn't play out the entire match.

Agree with NS re Tomo.  He's a long way ahead of Disco at this point.  His prep not great though having not played for weeks now.  Strange decision to bring in Disco vs the Swans but what's done is done.

That's probably why Disco Should play next Thursday night and Laurie also.

Don't flirt with form.

Tommo is always the unlucky one. He is reliable though and a great one on one player. Disco has pace and youth for future. Half back is his role I reckon.

Disco no doubt the future 58 but we won vs the Pies with Tomo in last time and he played a VG game.

Macca in for Joel who was pretty ordinary against the Swans for mine.  Back to sub.

Laurie comes in for Melk?

Seeing as how the game takes place in a little over 24 hours time, I can’t see why they haven’t released the teams.

This is a final that is important to the club and those playing. How do you then take 4 of your best player out and rest them for the last quarter (or quarter and a half!) as you suggest? That would mean no interchanges for that period. With respect, hopefully that is not going to happen.

Does anyone know when the teams for Saturday’s game is going to be announced?

Not 100% sure but I think 5pm tonight.

At least the match is broadcast on 7HD tomorrow

IN Bell, Valentine, McRae, Briggs, Emile-Brennan, Toledo, Farris-White

OUT Grundy, Spargo, Schache, Jordon, McDonald, Woewodin, Dunstan (ACL).

According to the Melbourne Football Club website:

“As Melbourne have the pre-finals bye, some AFL listed players become ineligible to play this week in the VFL.

“Melbourne have also decided to rest some of the AFL listed players due to the sahort break between the VFL match and the AFL final on Thursday night”.

And not naming them at all as well and pulling them last minute.

8 AFL players - J. Adams, K Turner, D Smith, J Harmes, A. Moniz-Wakefield, M. Jefferson, W. Verrall, K. Farris-White

Far out.

Like, maybe we can win it, but Jefferson probably needs to have a blinder up forward to do it. We know that Munro, White and Harmes will get it out of the centre, our defence isn't going to be outstanding, so it comes down to forwards making every opportunity count.

Ouch.

Schache out.... Seriously

Agree 100%. The Schache omission is absurd. He cannot get anywhere near our AFL finals team 🙏🏼

The interesting one for me, if he's eligible, is Salem.

If it's his health causing his form dip then obviously he gets the week off. If it's just form I'd be giving him the run at Casey. Send a message and hopefully gets him and easy kill.

Surely Laurie and Turner both play. I'd give Smith the week off, purely due to his injury history, it's too big a risk.

If it's Joel Smith he has already got a week  off as he is prob not going to play with Casey unless they drop him.

Salem's last quarter and a half was good and  he should be kept in the team IMO.

Laurie May get a run but will surely be in the 23 on his form last Sunday.

Really disappointing selections. Do we really need to hold over all of Laurie, Tomlinson, Hibberd, Grundy, Jordon, McDonald, Schache, Spargo and Woewodin when we'll likely make one change this week? That's eight players sitting around doing nothing when they could be getting a high level game in.

Not only do we most likely end Casey's season as a result, we deprive our fringe players of the last chance they have of getting game time. Do we really want to be bringing players into a Preliminary or Grand Final side not having played for a month?

What exactly are the guidelines can you elaborate please?  Does it say you just can't play AFL listed players come finals?  Surely not, I remember a few of them playing in the VFL granny last year.

The following players are being held back in case they get called up to play for the Dees 5 days later.

B. Grundy, J. Jordon, T. McDonald, J. Schache, C. Spargo, T. Woewodin (AFL)

Can't have them play a full game, a final no less, against the Bulldogs on Saturday and then expect them to potentially play in a massive final on Thursday.

As to the rules, I always thought that as long as the senior side was still in you could play anyone no matter how many games they had played.

Someone else will be able to elaborate on what the amount of games that you have to have played if your senior side is out.

15 listed WB players: Crozier, Busslinger (0 AFL games), Cleary, Gardner, O'Brien, Garcia, Poulter, Gallagher (0), Clarke (0), West, Raak (0), Khamis, Sweet, McComb, McLean - including 5 who have not played at AFL level.

We have 8 MFC listed players including 7 with no AFL experience.  White, Munro and Buntine do add something though.

Looks stacked against us.

Not disappointing. What if the club wants to play an intra club this week in the lead up to our game and would rather those guys front up to that instead of a VFL final?

Our #1 priority is our AFL side. If we learnt anything from last year, is that we need everyone fit, firing  and ready to go.

What if one of these guys did a serious injury at Casey, like Dunstan last week, and was needed in a prelim? How annoyed would you be if Gawn went down against the Pies and Grundy was unavailable because he got injured at Casey?

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
