Richmond lost John Northey to Brisbane Bears. Geelong lost Garfield Ayres to Adelaide.

Not relevant - Richmond had Walls who was a premiership coach in the wings so were fine with Northey going while Geelong finished 11th in 1999 & Cats rightly refused to extend Ayers beyond 2000 so he left.

Northey screwed Melbourne over and did the same at Richmond.

100% deeserved on merit and performance, and as Grapeviney alluded to, deemonstrated ability to adjust his game plan.

However I can’t help feeling with the external noise, a’la Mick, Caro et al (you know who), I think this is the perfect way for the board to back up their statement, and I applaud the presideent and dee board for this move at this time to make sure the club is focused on finals, should the noise start again as our success triggers the malcontents.

Totally untrue. Melbourne was pondering whether to reappoint him or not so he jumped ship. It was the right decision.

Richmond had a premiership coach in Robert Walls coming back to Melbourne & were keen to get him. Northey got wind of it & jumped ship.

Ridley dithered and Northey sensed Melbourne was not committed to him. Meanwhile Richmond approached Northey as their coach had health issues and was seen as likely to quit..

My understanding was that also the Dees had quietly sounded out Balme anyway .

Not true on both accounts he was holding out for money at Melbourne and Richmond approached him and did the same for Brisbane

These extended contracts are great for the coach as it means a big extra payout. Not so good for the Club.

Look how its worked out for Clarkson @ Hawks & now Footscray or West Coast.

And tell me the last Premiership coach that was poached due to the contract not being long enough ???

I suggest you think about why this hasn't happened. Just maybe well-run clubs sign up successful coaches so they can't be poached.

Jury is out on this for me. A coach usually only lasts x amount of years at a club.

What’s the jury out on? He’s already delivered us a flag and we are again in the hunt for another. What more do you expect from a coach?

Dumb idea. If he's already contracted until the end of 24 why not wait til mid 23.

12 months can be long time in football

I think they did!

So far he has done very well.  My jury is out on the future like beyond next year.

What do you think would happen in 2024 that would lead us to sack a coach who got us 3 top 4 finishes and a flag in the previous 3 seasons?
He is literally the most successful coach of the last 3 seasons in the AFL.

Why? Our list is primed to continue to challenge.
We only have two key players who I suspect will slow down significantly in the next year or two, in May and Gawn.
And we can absolutely go out and try and replace both in trades.

Possibly. Pretty damned hard to replace Gawn.

True, but I think the key to that would be finding a good contested marking CHF which could well be Petty.

I think our midfield can dominate playing with a poorer ruckman, but it’s the marking dominance of Gawn down the line that is so important to us.

The extension of Goody’s tenure is both excellent, and perfectly timed.  Huge pat on the back to all concerned.

I don't like long contracts. i think 2 years extension is the right call for all concerned.

Well done Goody and MFC. Looking forward to another flag or 2 over the next few years.

Solid point, some on here are acting as if we’ve appointed him until 2033, a 2 year extension is more than reasonable

Not quiet sure what you're saying.

I've given 3 examples of premiership coaches where the Clubs signed up the coaches for long deals and later regretted it.

If the Club had waited until mid 2024 it would have made a more informed decision.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
