Exactly.  The "...medico's a good bloke..." defence.  Howwould Cornes have any objective knowledge was what makes a good doctor -except the above statement. A good fireman possibly.

The hypocrisy is huge when compared to the outrage on Oliver and medical management.

This is far more a case of "bringing the game into disrepute" than alleged tanking without tanking.  Far worse, especially given the current (entirely correct) emphasis on concussion.

Sounds a bit like the usual AFL, outrage without major consequences.

Yes. Damage to the frontal lobe causes impulsivity and poor decision making. Look at the instances of boxers, MMA fighters and spousal abuse. These people have suffered multiple concussions and direct damage to their pre frontal cortexes, which is the thinking centre of the brain and helps us to self regulate, problem solve and provides us with a capacity for reflective thinking, thinking before acting etc.

There's also a great doc on Netflix about NFL player Aaron Hernandez called 'Killer Inside'. He had repeated concussions that led to brain injury, that then led to dark outcomes. You get the picture, but it goes into all this stuff.

David King on Sen just hauled Cornes over the coals for his comments around this incident. Said if it was any other club Cornes would have come down on them like a tonne of bricks (100% true imo). Went hard at him. Well played Kingy.

Turns out the club doctor is a close friend of Cornes. All he had to do was state this upfront and decline to comment on the matter. Nothing wrong with standing by a mate. Nobody expects an objective comment if talking about personal friends so best not to comment at all.

The league has fined Port Adelaide $100,000 for breaching AFL concussion protocols, with half included in the soft cap.

What a total joke. Port should have started next year on minus eight points as a minimum.

Furthermore, that $50k hit is probably most of the doctor's wage. So he moves on and they're back to square one.

I was thinking of working with the AFL on one of my next films, but they're a completely corrupt corporate believe in nothing organisation.

Their legal advice must be, don't give the current complainants any ammunition by coming down too swiftly.

I don't think that's necessarily correct. If they do it again before the end of the 2024 season, I believe they would be penalised for that breach specifically AND fined the suspended $50,000.

In my view, they are very lucky this time not to have also been penalised 4 or 8 Premiership points, although also fully suspended until the end of 2024 or 2025.

No mention of the Doctor so I'm guessing he is still there this week. The Lawyers will be taking note of this and it will be used as proof the AFL do not care about player welfare.

I know Kingy irritates a lot of people but he's not afraid to call BS when it's there. Those two have worked well together on radio and there is mutual respect but when things need to be called out King shows good character. 

And it absolutely is true, the volkano would have gone off. 

He should have stayed out of this one and if he was pressed on one of the TV shows then maybe a brief defence of Fisher's character in general and that's it. He's commented too much on the incident itself, talking about how hard it is in the moment for doctors and tending to a million things through the course of a game. 

And while we're on the topic of 'good clubs sticking by good people' Kane, why is your club so hesitant to give the coach a new deal?

And they've probably gone, great, no worries. Kane gets to protect Port and King gets to bring balance to the debate.

It really is that cynical the way some of this stuff plays out and SEN are real bottom feeders...

Disgraceful outcome. AFL continues to protect its brand at all costs. Forget player welfare.

Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me. I've never felt more of a 'scripted' feeling about the media more than this year. In wrestling terms this would be known as a 'work'. Guess it is sports entertainment after all!

I want to hear about what needs to happen, what needs to be different about processes, protocols etc. I don't want to hear Kane Cornes saying how doctors have it so tough and have to tend to so many things in the moment and could easily make a mistake by missing a potential concussion and requirement for a SCAT5 test, because to me that just means there is scope for another mistake to be made in future. This is absolutely not a time for the old "You wouldn't know because you never played or worked in a footy club, you don't know how hard it is" routine. 

No excuses, we need solutions and we need the select few people who actually know the subject back to front to come up with these. Not people with a conflict of interest or sticking up for mates. 

 

Agree, but Kane was defending the character of the doctor as he has treated his family members in crisis situations. I do not think he was generalizing or making excuses for this person, just defending their character and integrity.  

So basically a $50,000 fine, what a joke. The AFL continues to deliver incompetency.
