PODCAST: Rd 18 vs Brisbane

Demonland

Recommended Posts

One point up, Viney clears from Centre bounce and kicks the ball  in front of goals-20 seconds left in the game. (I kid you not I’m getTing nervous just typing this) . JVR gains possession of  the ball - it looked to me  like he is about to have a shot - but instead decides to handball a little in front.  Do you think that was tactical.  Would they be instructed not to go for goal in case it’s a point and the Lions gain possession?

In answer to Binman- best home and away win I’ve ever seen live. Loved the noise we all made ❤️💙❤️

In terms of amazing games I’ve seen live in no particular order:

Eagles v Demons (Round 22) in 2018

Queen’s Birthday v Pies in 2017

QF v Carlton in 2000

EF v Saints in 2006

This game was certainly up there with the King’s Birthday game this season👍🏻

What do you gentlemen think about the echo chamber that is the AFL Media?

Daicos this, Daicos that, Collingwood Premiers already... Very tiring and obnoxious.

By the way, David King already said that it is Collingwood's premiership to lose, so I think he has already jinxed them. 😂

v Carlton last season? (Kozzys goal).

my biggest questions are about forward line structure.

Can we play melksham and Fritsch together?

who plays forward when all fit out of jvr, brown, McDonald and Grundy?

petracca must surely play at least 50% forward after the last fortnight too.

I saw the game as about a 50/50 split. When Brisbane were on top we looked helpless. What needs to improve for us to stop them looking so good in offense as they did in the middle of the game. Ideally we need to shorten periods of dominance to less than half the game.

I really hope he has and this is what I'm doing when I talk highly of them.

At the game it was clear we lifted our intensity mid way through the third. It went goal for goal at the end and then we dominated the last quarter. Game over. What’s impressed me the most the last 2 weeks is the rise of the second tier mids under Viney. Can you see a spot for JJ once Oliver comes back? Has there ever been a more important goal than the one Viney kicked? Do you see Chandler making his way back into the side after his stellar first 10 games?

Sorry Andy, I’m fired up this morning & made a meal of the vmail service — 2m thing really threw — might be too late to work into the pod but I just wanted to say my bit to align to Binman’s 2023 rhetoric — which is spot-on!!!

Boy, how excited I am to have a coaching panel that’s being SMARTER in 2023 & fooling the moronic, forcibly vitriolic & reactive mainstream-media-bots w/their mediocrity & reactive mentality into having zero idea as to what MFC are building, not to mention the fact Clarry is gonna be cherry-ripe, that Slewyn has the boys super fit & more-dangerously the point — has them believing in that Aerobic excellence to the point where we sense we can beat anyone if in the game in last qtr!!! Buckley even tried to back over his verbal-faecal-matter LW saying for large part of the game he was right about MFC “fighting to make finals” despite us only being a victim to brilliance + some of the best kicking i’ve seen in 35+ years of footy! We rode it out & came home with confidence, belief & as Binman & I concur — this innate belief throughout the coaching & playing group is coming to the fore now, despite not having 2 of our absolute best & adroit players. That’s what concession can do (expected score has us +26 to expected btw)

So I’m interested in each of you opening up on how you sre taking that last 12m & if you see it being let-loose now or kept in the tool-kit? I think we brought it out earlier than we’d of liked but wow, what a show! DON’T SLEEP on fact we missed 4 PRIME opportunities earlier in qtr (Brown missed mark in square, Max miss early in qtr, Nibs miss, Roo chance at end of qtr & more) & the ONLY Lions goal was from a wrongly adjudicated free. All this against a team in-form, firing & playing their best footy (that won’t stand up in finals, as it needs to be too perfect to come thru).

It’ll be intriguing to see if SG locks away this beast-mode or will he now back us to maintain it for 6wks & Finals? My thought is that it’s prob still too early to let cat out of bag, as teams can study it & try to combat it & show other teams a “how-to” guide, risky! Will we go back to 80% beast-mode & only break-glass if needed?

May still a worry, back 100% worrying him & fwd-line for me still needs to be worked out (FWIW: Grundy will play 35% Ruck & rest fwd/bench 60/40 — alongside a fwd line of the following: BBB (the vacuum), JVR, Fritta, Melk, Kossie, Nibbs & Trac that’s the fwd line, (yes it’s 8 players as that’s how fwd/bk teams work in modern footy folks due to rotations (bench) & rotations (rotate on-field) before I get apoplectic induced nibbles from tribe) only other combo is Tommo in & Petty fwd, but that’s in-shed atm!

Keep up the great work. PS The Grundy narrative is just so moronic & delivered with false temerity that I’m at a loss to even begin to challenge it such is the lunacy & lack of common sense in some of the commentary. Grundy is NOT going anywhere, he WILL play Finals & the last 2-3 H&A games as it’s all sort of the bigger picture folks & shows the hegemony of our Club.

Lastly, love to know if you felt THAT coming as I did, ie you were seeing Brisbane’s fear with them locking thing a up & seemingly worried bout our firepwr & fitness knowing they couldn’t keep playing that perfect OR if — like I would of been 4y ago  — were you tossing out bubs with its dirty bath water?

@binman How much SHOULD SG let the boys go now Ala prev yrs or does he cont to hold back until its too short a time period for clubs to react & makes it less weeks we have to keep the momentum up?

Clubs need a LOT of luck to win a flag folks so it’s no guarantee… But boy, we’re loaded & ready to explode you can take that to the bank whilst picturing a non-niggle-laden Clarry (which really we’ve never seen before with the power he has now as he’s been banged up for 3 years), absolutely flying R20 onward 🔥🔥🔥

This is a special group folks, strap in!!! Yes I’m super-positive, an antidote to Andy’s MFCSS, but like Binman - it’s for a reason.. The closer I look at data the more I #believeinthedees 2023 Campaign & relish the strategy behind it.

YET not one media person outside Kornes (who’d of thought) & likely Hoyne will see it for what it is.. a scary scary proposition to handle! Mainstream media: Instead, somehow they all jump on the cats. Which I’m certain Mr Poker-Face himself, Goody — is all the more happy with!!!

Love the pod! ️. An amazing win, Max, Trac, Viney personified incredible effort, skill belief and leadership. We were clean and on early, raced to 4 goal lead and looked like we would run away. Brisbane (clearly a good side) eroded that lead by half-time before getting out to 28 points themselves several times. How did this 50 point swing happen and what do we need to improve in this middle period?

Agree with that I would like to know your comments on how it was so easy in 2nd, 3rd quarters for Brisbane to cut through our defence to score, and so difficult in the other quarters?

Fantastic and important win. I’d be curious for the panels thoughts on why and where we struggled in the third quarter. It seems we were beaten in the middle of the ground, were unable to move it forward and that we were only able to swing the momentum when Petracca moved to the middle late in the quarter.

Afternoon boys. What a weekend. Dees win, freo lose and Essendon embarrassed!

Before I get to my point,

Binman - your rant last week over comments made my David King and Nathan Buckley was music to my ears. Every weeks these peanuts in the media make ridiculous click bate comments and are never ever held accountable. Jeez it winds me up and I absolutely feel your pain.

Speaking of the media, a lot being said that the Grundy / Gawn experiment hasn’t worked and some even saying Grundy will be at another club next year which is just hilarious.

In my humble, Grundy was brought in to share the ruck load as big Maxy was clearly burnt out towards the end of last year, and also in case of an injury to max, we’d still have an All Australian ruckman in the team - as was the case in round 2 against Brisbane.

This year Max has a partner in crime to help him out meaning he’s stayed fresher and ready to explode in the final third of the season. Exhibit A Friday night.

Whether Grundy can develop as a forward only time will tell, can’t see it personally but a least it will keep the pressure on brown and JVR to perform each week.  I can see Grundy coming back into the team in a few weeks time to give Maxy a chop out again just before finals.

Over to you lads for your thoughts.

I’m sure you’ll unpack what this beast-mode looked like but to see our normal DNA in there, w/just those small —yet beautiful & largely unseen prior to now —adjustments of: creating more space in the hit-zone (where we either mark or create stoppage) w/some late, smartly held leading patterns that don’t rely on blocks ergo aren’t obvious, added urgency on Ball-carrier to be on move (w/run by bball, Shepard for man coming to contest w/speed etc that’s clearly instructed to BURST once they control loose-ball, break-lines thru halfway to d50 & look for 15-20m hit up thats designed to get deeper entry @speed etc etc — This Is what I’ve been waiting for & we got it in spades. That stuff isn’t instinct, it’s practiced & it verifies loads of pre-season focus, that’s the exciting part —- it means it’s been clearly HELD-BACK!!!

Gents, is everyone looking at the Grundy situation wrong. This time last year gawn was cooked, we get bundled out of finals with gawn looking very tired. Fast forward to 23 and we witness that game from gawn, and we are looking at finals with AFLs #1 ruck fit and firing and a top 4 finish.

Should we stop looking at it as a dual ruck set-up, and more of a support act (albeit quite an expensive investment), and a view to a replacement for gawn in 3-4 years where we will still have trac/oliver prime and the next tier coming through.

1. Gawn was able to play how he did because of Grundy’s efforts through the year. Agree?

2. Will BBB make it to finals with his dodgy knees? He seems to start games on fire then fade, possibly for physical reasons. If he doesn’t make it then it would have to be Grundy or Schache because we need the tall.

3. Will Melksham be the unlucky one come September if Fritsch comes good in time?

4. When Pig is healthy how can he fit back in? Even if Petty is out injured he must be replaced by a tall - Tommo. Thoughts?

5. Should Damian Barrett be blown up? Metaphorically of course. So predictable that he (and others) ignore the win and talk about our “disrespect” of Grundy.

As always look forward to the great Pod.

Wondering if you and the panel could analyse where Fremantle is at in terms of their final position to determine where the Luke Jackson draft picks land?

I put the question to Siri and she replied, “I am not in a position to answer that question.” So much for artificial intelligence.

What an amazing come from behind performance Friday night.

George - was our overrunning the Bears in the final quarter vindication of, or result of, our loading?  Were we just so much fitter than they were to run out the whole game.  Of course some in the MSM suggest that they just took it as a win and stepped off the accelerator, which I think is disrespectful to our performance.

It will be interesting IF Fritta gets back this year; also TMcD.  Where will they fit, and who wilt hey displace?  I was very impressed with JVR's contributions, despite being goalless.  His back up ruck work was very important and contributed at at least one goal.

Can any of you envisage Bowey going to a HFF especially if Hibberd gets back - someone will need to vacate a defensive spot.  IMVHO he could fill the Spargo role, +++.  Good kick, good one on one and wins quite a lot of ball.  Thoughts.

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
