Maybe I've missed some of the accurate posts, that week the poster seemed a little abrasive when we were discussing possible cover for the suspended Hunter.

Tomlinson would be extremely stiff to be dropped if that's the case. We wouldn't be thinking Petty forward and Smith to take Cameron are we?

It would be very strange to bring Petty in and play him back now of all times. Not impossible but goes against selections this year.

It makes no sense whatsoever

I think we need to get our heads around the possibility that Petty won’t have a set role for the year, the backline personnel and structure will change, Hibbo won’t play every week and that Tomlinson and Smith might be in and out of the side even if they’ve played well.

In 2021 our defensive pressure and backline set up was amazing and we could roll with the same backline all year. Now teams are moving it quicker and targeting the gaps, we have to pick the right match ups.

Same for up forward where Jackson’s mobility pretty much gave us another pressure forward and Brown and McDonald could play their positions. That’s gone and we’re scrambling to create the best forward mix.

Horses for courses so to speak and I think that’s right.

My main worry is that doesn’t allow the forwards to have continuity and build trust with play and performance.

I hope that matchups issues like this is the exception to the rule - and that whatever we go with, it is given time to gel.

If May goes to Hawkins there really isn’t a match up for Tommo.

A totally subjective and absurd statement. Tommo matches up fine.  If he is dropped after an excellent game its the worst selection decision since Dunn was kept in the 2s by Oscar McD.

It would be a repeat of our silly selection decisions of 2022.

Do not believe that Mitch Cleary would have any idea who is in and not in Thursday night. Will wait for the team to announced tonight.

Would be crazy. Until the moment Petty was injured we had the best attack in the league - and since then, real problems. He creates a contest, marks well and opens space with his movement. Back to CHF imv.

Not to mention Petty way undercooked.

I just want at least one game with Smith, Petty, Jvr, Fritta, Kozzie and Chandler up forward. With a ruck popping up now and then. Some hard match ups that all show great agility and athleticism.

So who's the match up if not Hawkins?

Cameron would run rings around him. Rohan could jog away from him on a lead. Maybe Ollie Henry but Lever has to play on someone and we aren't going to play 4 talls.

Tomlinson's 2 good games this year have been on Lobb and Cox. That's the right match up for him.

I don't necessarily love the gamble of bringing in an underdone Petty, but if the coaches think he's right then he's far more mobile than Tomlinson

Really dont think Petty can play after 5 weeks out.

Langdon only had badly bruised ribs as I recall. A week out and it took him a long time to regain full form.

Years ago I had bruised ribs..... painful is an understatement.

If Chris Scott wants to move the game to the MCG on Sunday then I am more than happy to face them with Patrick Dangerfield to test out those ribs.

Paddy can test out those ribs milking a few cows..

None...

Petty to get some game k's under his belt in magoos has to be far more appropriate.

Who ever takes that defensive role tomorrow night will be run ragged.

So yeah...lets bring in the underdone guy !!!

If Joel Smith can prove semi reliable and back up his performance on KB'day (ideally with some better goal kicking) then we might settle it down. If Smith isn't the right guy for the job and Petty has to go forward then we'll try to settle that and probably give Tommo a longer run in the side down back. But it's just hard to be fully settled until we've had a look at various imperfect options.

It's a lot of responsibility to put on a kid but JVR hopefully with some help from Gawn, Fritsch and the smalls probably has to keep growing as a player and be the consistent presence forward.

We're 10-0 since round 1 2021 when May, Lever and Tomlinson have all played in the same side.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to get rid of Tomlinson.

Petty should return to the forward line.

Mmmm in Dangerfield's interview with Whateley a day or two ago on SEN you could literally hear Dangerfield suck up air before he answered every question. And Dangerfield himself said he has no idea how long he'll be out, said he wasn't even letting his kids jump all over him like usual given the pain/discomfort, etc – no chance he was playing this week.

Good call. Although Bowser will have trouble getting back in that I can't see who goes.

Could Bowser replace the perpetually unlucky JJ as sub?

Its not about exact like for like match ups its about the defence working as a unit. Sometimes for short periods McVee has to mark a bigger opponent, Hibbo has to tag resting rucks or May on a small quick player. You just dont drop players in good form & in any case Petty, apart from the odd flash, has been in average form this year.

And on a wet night.

Goody wants him forward, so why would he drop Tommo, after 2 good games that have helped Lever and May.

If it comes to pass it's because the FD thinks

Petty back + Smith fwd > Tomlinson back + Petty fwd

I'm sceptical, but others here including @Slartibartfast are in favour.

if the Whisper that Thomo will be dropped in deference to Petty is true are we so sure that Petty will then replace Thomo down back and not play Forward as was Goody's preference for him ?

perhaps they thought there was no match up for Thomo down back given the wet conditions and are deciding to go smaller down back . Bowey comes in . Use May and Lever and Hibbo and Rivers on any combination of Hawkins , Cameron , Rohan and Henry . It's a risk but so is playing Thomo . i agree though that he is stiff considering the game he played last week   .

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
