It is from where I sit. Especially considering how good a backman he is.

I think the beauty of Petty is his ability and capacity to be a genuine swingman, a la D.Neitz. (big call). His defensive capabilities are well known. He was doing a great job as a foil and support for JVR, and starting to hit the score board in his own right.

I'd go as far to say, considering the players in the team that we have, he is a luxury.

Tomlinson was instrumental to our win last week and cannot be dropped. Smith is improving with each game. Clarry back plus Bowser ( who was playing his best game for the season) Back means selection headaches🤯

Dare I say ‘correlation does not equal causation’? I’m sure everyone has heard all the banging on by King about how TMac’s injury in 2022 triggered the end of our winning streak and, seemingly, all our form problems thereafter.

Did he say anything about being beaten by what we knew or didn't know?

yep,   back your players in. Cannot omit Smith or Tommo after their recent winning efforts.  No change to team unless Oliver is given green light by medical staff. Petty to VFL for a game or 2. Didnt Bowey get tossed around by cats last year?

If you don't mind me asking, where is this word coming from? A few weeks ago you guaranteed us Gus would not be starting on the wing against Freo and bang, Gus started on the wing.

In fairness to him his sources has been generally very accurate.

Though, I will say I am a bit mystified that they now throwing Petty back after hearing Goody being hell bent in wanting to trial him forward over the next few months.

If this is the case then this is really strange decision considering Tomlinson has been really good since he's come back into the team.

In the game he was injured, played his forward role so well. Since we need a 2nd tall up fwd, he's stays.

Plus Tommos KB game was par excellence.

Good call. Although Bowser will have trouble getting back in that I can't see who goes.

Yes a big one Kossie please.

Can't wait for this game.

If Oliver is cleared, he's a walk in for me. Spargo out.

Yes it was one of Scotts strategies to be very physical with Bowie and not give him any time with ball in hand. Really unsettled him and he had problems for the rest of the year. They will more than likely try something similar with McVee. I'm not sure this is a good game for Bowie to return.

Maybe I've missed some of the accurate posts, that week the poster seemed a little abrasive when we were discussing possible cover for the suspended Hunter.

Tomlinson would be extremely stiff to be dropped if that's the case. We wouldn't be thinking Petty forward and Smith to take Cameron are we?

If Petty comes in for Tomlinson, it'll be because Tomlinson doesn't have a great match up this week IMV. I'd start Tomlinson on Hawkins, but if Hawkins got a hold of him, I've no idea where you'd be able to play Tomlinson.

If you take the squad mentality view, maybe next week Petty swings forward and Tomlinson comes back in?

I'd be shocked if they dropped Thommo after his best game for the club. He is perfect for Cameron as he has the elite endurance to go with him

Petty how ever you look at it will be underdone. In any case he is more likely to play fwd if he is brought in.

And May always takes Hawkins. Can't see why that would change.

I took from this that Clarry's problem is still more the hamstring than the blisters. His time in hospital affected his re-hab.

Thommo!  Don't have to be dead to be stiff!  Thought he was fantastic last week.

That's pretty tough. I would have thought giving Petty a run in the two's and giving Tommo another week to really prove himself would have been a better option.

Endurance is a factor with Cameron but he’s at his most dangerous with his agility at ground level and on the lead. Tomlinson’s big weakness is agility, and his strength is using his size and positioning on big talls.

If May goes to Hawkins there really isn’t a match up for Tommo.

I think this is more it - although Tomlinsons agility has improved, it’s nowhere near his strength - see Jamarra last season

it’s also why Tomlinson played on McKay and not Cameron against Carlton

I think we need to get our heads around the possibility that Petty won’t have a set role for the year, the backline personnel and structure will change, Hibbo won’t play every week and that Tomlinson and Smith might be in and out of the side even if they’ve played well.

In 2021 our defensive pressure and backline set up was amazing and we could roll with the same backline all year. Now teams are moving it quicker and targeting the gaps, we have to pick the right match ups.

Same for up forward where Jackson’s mobility pretty much gave us another pressure forward and Brown and McDonald could play their positions. That’s gone and we’re scrambling to create the best forward mix.

I'm not sure that Petty's agility is any better Particularly after recovering from an ankle issue...

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
