POSTGAME: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

@A F you are spot on with your crowd analysis.

I have never attended a game with a quieter 80k plus attendance. Mates who watched the game at home say the crowd sounded insane on TV akin to a final so I suspect some channel 7 audio foul play.

We were clearly outnumbered (as expected) but our supporters were as good as I’ve heard all year. I’m pretty vocal and emotionally invested so it’s often hard for me to personally get a gauge.

I think the Big Freeze beanies also give a bit of a false indication if the crowd ratio given the sea of blue throughout the ground. 
BUT I will say that is the best behaved Collingwood crowd I’ve experienced in years. I got the feeling they were pretty content with how they were travelling going into the game so weren’t overly phased by the outcome one way or another. Last year on the other hand was absolutely feral.

Agree on all of that. 

At one point in the second the crowd was so cagey; Melb fans because we were dominating and doing nothing, and Pies fans probably because they were being dominated. It was like a theatre crowd. Hearing coughing and the players yelling.

BUT the crowd got involved at moments and was really loud and energised - Grundy, Hunter hit, our 3rd term and the the last 10 mins both sides.

Was good fun to watch that footy game. Tough contest and reminded me of the finals in 2018. Love this team! Glad to have seen them live the last three weeks.

I think I mentioned earlier that Kozzie may have been playing a defensive forward role on Noble but watching the replay it seems it was actually on Murphy. Chandler/Spargo seemed to be matched up with Noble.

The crowd was very loud at times but at other times was eerily quiet for such a large crowd and that was down to our methodical play which took the wind out of the Pies supporters - they didn't have much to cheer about between the first ten minutes and the last 3 minutes.

May have also been where his head was at when he dropped those two marks that were all but his to ice the game but fumbled them in the dying moments.

YB after watching the replay 3 times those dropped marks by Steven and the ones dropped by Rick and Max grate quite a bit. Lol.!!!

I just spoke to a Pies supporter friend of mine who is good mates with Joel Smith.

Kudos to some of our analysts here on Demonland , Binman and others who were spot on.

When asked how did you do it and what was your game plan against Collingwood, Joel said that we had to give something away to gain something, and it was letting them have the wings to move the ball, but. Completely blocking the corridor and and have more numbers down back, which meant they couldn’t attack with that run they are used to through the middle .

Yes, they are both nice guys in that regard. They never put a player down in malice yet when the game calls for 'mongrel' both adhere to the respectabilities of the game whilst getting the job done - just because they sometimes hurt the player, we have to acknowledge that '... that's  footy, folks!' in its most subtle form.

Yep, but I think it is almost time for Spargo to be rested and Kozzie to be retained (except in a defensive forward flash) in the forward pockets or thereabouts. He has incredible pick-up skills with the ball and we all know he can run 'em down and kick reliable snaps.

One, the only thing he was asked about in relation to our forward line up until after the hawks win is what our best line up looks like. Connection NEVER came up!

Why?

Because we were a scoring  machine, having scored more than 100 points in five of the nine games we had played after demolishing the hawks (when we again broke the ton - with only 2 less scoring shots than against the pies i might add) - including scores of 115, 135, 126, 139!

Oh, he was also often asked about, and spoke to, our stunning accuracy (still #AFL 1).

Actually now that I think about it, he also spoke about our nuts spread of goal kickers (AFL#1), including our record breaking spread in the hawks game.

In his pressers since the port game, in response to ignorant questions about our forward line and supposed connection issues, Goody has pointed out MULTIPLE times that we are the highest scoring team as evidence of good connection and a forward line that is functioning well.

And again after the pies win, when asked about accuracy, he couldn't have been more emphatic - it was 'the least of our problems', noting that accuracy had only been a problem in the previous 3 games.

By the by, it is worth noting that in those 3 games (port, freo, blues) we still had more than 20 scoring shots, which again makes a lie of any supposed connection issues.

In fact the only time I can recall Goody talking about forward connection in anythimg but a postive way was in the presser following the pies game.

Having already said scoring is not an issue for us (we had just had 26 scoring shots for petes sake), he was again asked a stupid question about connection and he said something about the new mix of players and young players taking time to build synergy. 

King is not making it up or pulling it from a rabbits hat?  Of course he is. That's my point. 

When I talk about why it is an issue when the media pushes some stupid false narrative that the objective facts completely contradict, it is because it distorts fans understanding of the game.

And the problem is compounded because fans accept and then reinforce the false narrative. And in this example (the connection myth), ignore the objective facts.

It is mind boggling.

We must indeed be listening to different pressers....Nearly every post game Goodwin has mentioned connection.  You might be hearing the word and blanking it out.  To insinuate that i am ignoring objective facts is twaddle.   Maybe you should go listen to some of Goodwins talks.   i could almost guarantee you connection has been mentioned by him 100+ times already this season.  We are constantly searching for this mysterious thing called "connection".

It is pretty clear you don't like King.  You go above and aboard to try and refute whatever he has to say. 

It is interesting you talk of false narrative vs objective facts.  Who decides this?  You?

I find that interesting re the noise. I was Level 3 & the crowd absolutely drowned out the “booing” of Grundy & I thought were very vocal. However overall I don’t think we are particularly “loud” supporters. Quite possibly because we watch the game unlike Collingwood who just turn up with the objective of making as much noise as possible. There was also the odd seat free on that level which I’ve never seen at most games let alone a big game so agree with crowd size .

The rule used to be that your foot couldn't be in contact wit the bal as it went over the line. If you go back through old footage you will see players poking the ball with their foot and quickly withdrawing it so as not to have the ball connected to their foot as it crossed the line.

I'd like to know when this interpretation changed?

Max took the mark before it had completely crossed the goal line as per Rules of the Game. In fact BT even mentioned that it was sus so you know there was something there.

You are right. The ball had to be over the line and the boot still in front of the line to be a goal. I remember doing this myself on a couple occasions. It was a clear rule that every player knew. Kind of has been forgotten now at least at AFL level. Perhaps to do with e frenetic pace and pressure of the modern game. Almost impossible to pull off a delicate tap and keep the foot in front of the line under pressure. The player will be severely crunched.

The diving comments initially came from Taylor on the Channel 7 telecast, supported by Watson. BT is so far past it that it's got beyond a joke. The day he's pensioned off will be a blessing for the entire footy community

We all went up a few decibels on Monday against the Pies to support our team and Brodie Grundy, the cheek of those fools booing their former two time All Australian was more than we could bare, particularly when they forced him out I loved those moments and you are correct D9 we are following the game rather than booing every oppo possession. We were right on on Monday.!!!
