After he said that Geelong were primed and were always going to challenge Collingwood.

 

I stopped listening to him at that point.

 

As for the game, history won't tell how good we were; how we controlled the game for 90% time, just like the Carlton game. Anyone thinking it was a close game, other than the scoreboard, didn't watch it.

 

Oh and great to see Salo back. So very calm under whatever pressure.

He is a serious unit when he plays like he did today. Which is how he plays every big game.

He would have had a jab, hope it is nothing too serious when it wears off. He was holding his kid on his left side during the team song which was great for a number of reasons

Gus then worked himself into the game and had a couple of important clearances.

The final Collingwood goal from a D50 stoppage though, Gus is again responsible for Daicos. And like the Crisp D50 stoppage goal, Gus was left ball-watching or simply too slow.

I worry about Gus, because I'm not sure there's a position for him when we have both wings covered, Salem back in the team and Oliver back in the team.

He's a good reader of the play, but he's not quick and he's not a good user by foot either. He's wonderfully courageous, but I do wonder where he fits when/if we're at full strength.

I feel the same, I can't see anything he can give to our list that we don't already have.

Our half back line looks very premium with Bowey, McVee, Salem and Rivers.

What we actually need is a player in the mid-field with elite foot skills. Gus unfortunately is not an elite kick.

Just like young McVee.

Just finished watching the game.  Fantastic stuff.  With the exception of the first 15min, we really dominated.  Suffocated their game.  Could have won by a lot more. A few observations:

• Our pressure and toughness was incredible, all around the ground. 
• We exposed them on the rebound but could have been more damaging
• Viney immense
• Gawn's marking back
• Fritsch clearly has gears
• Love having Salem back in the team
• Backline were in all in sync
• Loved Hibberd's work - clearly refreshed for this week
• Was it Sparrow who took N Daicos out of the game?
• Darcy Moore is very impressive

Did the Dees just lay down a blueprint for beating the Pies?  Will be interesting to see where they are at the end of round 19 after playing the Crows, Suns, Dogs, Dockers and Port.

When the time is right, mcvee should go thru the middle to see what he can do. Likely next season. Has speed would be suited there and give us another. And what happened to kossie having spells in the middle, he was great early in the year and helps him get into games

l felt the blueprint was laid as well - which is not to be confused, thankfully, with Schwabs red and blue print

If it was up to @DeeSpencer Hunter would be currently at Casey.

Just shows how completely out of touch he is with the game and current team dynamic. Hunter was absolutely enormous yesterday and has been great pick up this year.

 

 

Based on yesterday the backline is fixed, now for the forward line

Might have been mentioned already, but yesterday was Tomlinson best game for the club. I thought behind Viney and Salo, he was our best. 
If we can see him continue to build, he will be critical to our success.

I am a Fritsch defender now as he has lifted his defensive intensity enough to help the press. But he is frustrating me with when and how he engages in marking contests. There was one down the city end that he just had to engage the opponent and let JVR run at it and take an easy mark. Instead he had his own fly and it led to a rushed behind from memory. He did that a few times. 

We don’t have the luxury of him not knowing his very niche role anymore. He is our best forward, but not our gorilla. He could be our number one target, but only depending on march ups, he could be played out of the square but he also could be a decoy - that is the life of a medium sized forward with elite nous and skills around goal.

Offensively, he needs to take charge down there and that includes giving up his own opportunities to get others their opportunities. What he did at times on Moore was fantastic and a tactical win for Goodwin, but we will need to be ruthless in the future.

I don’t disagree but let’s just keep in mind how fickle sport can be. If Smith is preferred to petty up forward - that is it for Tomlinson.

I had to google what an ornithopter actually was. 

Biggest takeaway was we had a game plan that held up against theirs. One that shd be able to be replicated in finals. Executed it super well too.

The other thing notable was that when reading the AFL ap at half time, it said our 3 goals had all come from 40-50m, while four of Collingwood's five goals had come from 15-30m out. That obviously makes a huge difference with accuracy. 

But this is a ball movement thing that I'd suggest is also linked to fatigue. We go wider and we're happier to go wider during the middle part of the year, and then I suspect we'll start to go more central at the back end of the year.

I noticed right from the start we generally worked harder into the corridor today. It felt good!
