Another 6 goals on the weekend for Nick Watson at Caulfield Grammar away against Xavier. No Noah Yze.

That school comp is not a suitable barometer. Who was he playing on? Some kid making up numbers ?

Mids and key forwards next draft. Any word from Casey watchers how Jefferson is tracking?

Not well.

If you go through the premiership side and see who is not playing as well now you can see why we're struggling.

Any kids drafted now will only be the cherry on top, by the time they can fix holes in our list half the premiership side will be gone. If we want to fix deficiencies regardless of where they are we have to goto the trade table. First stop is a Key Forward and another Key back, Petty isn’t the answer forward if we are aiming for a flag and May is showing his age and needs some help as he can’t go with the taller fwds of the competition.

APS football is a pretty high standard stacked with kids that are TAC Cup or Coates League Players that play for their school first. A high number of high draft picks also have come through APS football. You should go watch a game. FWIW Watson played mid / forward.

He looked good his first few VFL games but as the Casey forward line has got taller and taller and the midfield less stocked he’s dropped right off.

Yes that's a point i made in the Casey thread y'day.  Jefferson is getting crowded out by the likes of BBB & Joel up front at the mo.

Might be a bit premature to judge him harshly as he's probably being played out of position at times.

Any frequent Casey watchers able to comment on how quick Blake Howes is?

Hold on. After 2021, it was all smiles and platitudes to the list assembled by Goody, Todd and JT (and Josh Mahoney of course). A possible premiership Demon Dynasty they all proclaimed!! ....

NS i'm pretty sure nothing we say on here will ever effect the Coach & FDs management of the list in any way whatsoever.

No harm in some expressing their views as to where it's presently at and wish lists surely?

Just DL banter & a bit of fun at the end of the day

Rangey type mover  - not quick.  He’s got some smarts and skills but can be laconic at times. I like him forward of the footy.  Toughness? Not Grgic. But not Grinter by the same token.  Needs another preseason but could be handy at start of 2024

Don't see him as a line breaker if that's what you are looking for Roy.  Not slow either though.

Sort of a slightly shorter sleeker version of Disco?

Quite agile on the move.

BBB should be retired

It's only the strongest school football competition in the country.

And against Xavier, a footballing factory who are consistently competitive at APS level.

Not sure what your expectations are of a 170 cm player rolling through the midfield and forwardline at that level.

6 goals not impressive enough for you?

Edited by JimmyGadson

My question re Watson is do we want another 170cm mid/forward? I’d like to recruit 2x 196cm fast outside mid with good skills and trade in a key forward. You gotta keep adding elite mods.

We currently have one tall forward who is a kid with a handfull of games. IMO it is time to give him a spell at Casey. Only problem is the option box is bare.

I don't think it is the strongest comp in the country. I watched st Pat's Ballarat get beaten by st Bede's in the Herald Sun championship a couple of years ago. St Bede's had its first win...I enquired...st Bede's had 17 TAC cup ( nab ) players in its team. No scholarships players. I had a son at APS school at the time and nephews at 2 others. I found the aps teams to have a couple scholarship boys, some with talent and most would never make tac cup. I think that is why they duck Herald Sun playoff to find best school team.

Just my opinion.

I have no affiliation with either as I didn't go to any of these schools, (I did play at Old Scotch in the Amo's however).

But from the footy I've watched, which is a decent amount, the APS bats deepest and have the strongest top end teams *generally.

Obviously there'll be years where a host of highly talented players will come from other school competitions, as you've just mentioned. But over the journey, the APS system has been the strongest.

Xavier college alone has consistently churned out players who make the level.

25% of players drafted in 2017 were from APS schools. And 24% in 2018. That's phenomenal really.

But back to the point. Nick Watson is an out and out gun and to understate his 6 goal performance against Xavier because it was *schoolboy footy is a silly thing to do. This is especially so given his size. The guy is a genuine A grade talent and I hope we're in with a shot to draft him.

Not sure where to put this.  From fox website:

They don’t come out of contract until the end of 2024, but Western Bulldogs star duo Tim English and Aaron Naughton are already being courted by nearly half the competition.

The Herald Sun reports up to eight clubs have interest in English and Naughton, who’re both from Western Australia, some 18 months ahead of their contracts expiring.

The pair’s manager Andrew McDougall said they’d wait until season’s end before considering their next move.  “Both boys are reasonably happy but we will wait until the end of the year until picking up discussions,” he told the Herald Sun.

The Dogs are reportedly keen to lock away English and Naughton on long-time deals before rival clubs come calling this off-season.

Can anyone with access to the HS website see if names of the clubs with interest are listed?

NO, they don't mention the clubs according to the article in the hard copy of the paper.

I think '@A F' has been seen knocking on Aaron Naughton's door...

I might join him.

I think Melbourne supporters are so used to having ordinary lists that when we finally get a good list with a smattering of genuine stars we're overwhelmed by its quality.  We do have a very good list but it's not clearly the best list and expectations should be set accordingly.  I think our age profile and quality suggests we should be able to win one or more flags with this list but it takes some luck and it's quite possible we won't win any more.

It may not affect list management, but don’t believe for a second that it’s not being read by anyone other than us. Coz it is. Just sayin’

One at the G will do me fine!

I was looking at our younger brigade.  We have a nice balance with all roles covered but I think we do lack star power there and that needs to be the focus of our drafting, trading and FA.  We don't need more "good" young players, we need some stars.

There's an age gap between Schache at 25y9m and Petty at 23y6m, we happen to have 22 listed players including Petty and younger:

B: McVee Adams D.Turner
HB: Bowey Petty D.Smith
R: Verrall Sparrow Rivers
C: Woewodin Jordon Howes
HF: Spargo VanRooyen Chandler
F: Sestan Jefferson Pickett
I: K.Turner Faris-White Laurie Monis-Wakefield

And I’ve made my thoughts clear on Fritsch if we’re playing 2 rucks and 2 talls he has to provide pressure or a wing rotation to contribute to the team and not his stat sheet.

… because that’s his primary goal, right? Pfft, how little you know.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
