If Goody was to get sacked after the Carlton game (purely as a hypothetical) and the interim coach said “ok we’ve got the pies this, let’s play them at their own game, let’s play with pace, run in numbers, hunt the opposition when the have the ball. Let’s play a smaller fwd line, let’s get it in quick, low and direct, let’s change the way we come out of the back half. Let’s leave Kosi / Fritsch isolated at times in the goal square and kick it to their advantage, let’s leave JVR one out and kick it in front of him instead of on top of him whilst Kosi and Chandler steam in from opposite pockets to anticipate the ball drop”. etc etc….

We’d almost wipe them and everyone would be saying where’s this been for the past 12 months. Goody is the coach and yes he built a lot of this team but we have a very stale feel about us currently.

So who here remembers the tone at the start of the 2021 season, when we'd missed finals again in 2020 and St Kilda were closer to a premership than us?

Sucess and failure are on a knife edge in the AFL, but I think we've got more to be hopeful about than pessimistic.

Sounding a bit like a Goodwin clone here, but we nearly won yesterday while playing badly and I'm sure there were plenty of lessons for us to learn.  ...just like we did post 2020.

Out of all the teams currently in the eight we have by far the most upside to our game. And we are fourth, we just have to find that connection again.

And lost 3 of those games (two finals and lions this year). And only scraped past the saint and the bombers.

So the supposedly unbeatable pies are not much better than 50 50 against top 8 sides in that period.

Some of the worst non calls from the umpires were right below me on the members wing.

Noone call tell me the pies or tigers would have not got some of those frees in front of their home crowd going bannnas - hell, they would get them when we are the home team.

I might have scared some kids too. Also told myself to pull my head in.

Disagree, they’ll murder us if we continue what we’ve been doing. We’ve got a defensive unit that can stop them but currently we won’t hurt them on the scoreboard.

Nothing gets the blood boiling like umpiring when at the ground (or elsewhere for that matter).  I've begun sitting with the Demon Army recently and my barracking has become a lot more positive, bar booing the umpires

The beauty of being interstate and having the house to oneself is that I can swear and rave at the TV all I like with no one being affected... then I log onto Demonland and try to be calm and rational and to hopefully learn something about the loss.  Perfect Jekyll and Hyde scenario!

This was the worst game I’ve seen melb play since 2019. We played with no dare, fluffed kicks all day and we’re absolutely hammered in the ground ball and clearances. 
 

Which has been consistent for a month!

Wholeheartedly agree. I went on my own and was alternating between yelling my guts out and being quietly incensed at the silence of supporters who were sitting in groups around me. 
 

I do often wonder if our players have genuine issues with their supporters, and the lack of support they offer compared to other teams.

Binman I have said elsewhere that we don't give enough credit to the average member / supporter. It was obvious to me that we would struggle yesterday. I think a lot of fans thought similar or thought we would straight out lose. Unlike Pies supporters who turn up no matter what because of belief after many years of winning seasons. I think Demon supporters are not wedded to footy in the same way, we are also conditioned over decades of loosing seasons. The old Here we go again rises to the surface. Having said all that I was surprised it was more than 20k. I was bitterly disappointed  yesterday the train marooned me at Sunshine and I did not get to the ground, returned home to watch the last three quarters on Kayo. The upside to yesterday was my GD won their Basketball game and she hit one from just inside the three line. four wins and a draw from 5 games this season.

I am surprised you are surprised MB. In my 63 years of following the Dees i see this every week. Dees supporters are conditioned and accepting of loosing, it is has been burned into our DNA. It will take decades of success to change.

BM is one of our senior members who lives in WA Doug I can just about guarantee he was not there. He is however a passionate member over many years.

I was on level 4 in a sparsely populated bay. There were no shouts of encouragement or any vocals at all from the Dees in the bay. I was probably being a bit of goose but jesus you can show some emotional investment. Get off your seat and cheer/vent once in a while. Way too reserved and timid.

My point is we can’t go gung ho immediately because the pies are much better at the attacking brand than we are. They’ve be doing it for 18 months now.

I reckon we should try to pinch Leppa off them or hire a similarly minded assistant to join our coaching team. I’m not sure we have the skills to execute like the pies do but that’s the way the game is going. We have to move with the times.

In terms of what to do in the immediate term I’d bring BB in and drop JVR (he needs a spell). Bring in a 3^rd tall defender which might help Lever regain his form. Maybe get the ball into Salems and Bowey hands and ask them to hit the corridor more. Put a rocket under our small brigade and tell them to get their collective finger out, including kossie.
