I've been living in a metaphorical cave and have not seen the Cerra incident. My comments are not about the merits of the decision. However, there is something wrong with the system if there have been something like 20 appeals of MRO decisions this year in less than half a season of football. It suggests that clubs, coaches and players are unsure of what is allowed and what isn't.

I believe Gil McLachlan has been good for the game overall. However, he will be leaving the competition at a time when there is too much unhappiness with the game itself. I suspect it boils down to poor in house administration as seen by the protracted process to appoint Gil's replacement and, probably as a consequence, Brad Scott's replacement. I suspect, though, that Gil's not the problem. The blame for failing to appoint a CEO in a timely manner leading to so much uncertainty must be laid at the feet of the Chairman, Richard Goyder. He had a responsibility to make sure Gil's departure was smooth and the transition to a new CEO seamless. He's clearly failed at what is essentially his number one responsibility.

McVee's been good in most games and I'd have to re-watch the game to determine if he was beaten on the day. He certainly had a low impact possession game (as did his senior mates down back).

Chandler has been well down since the North win and I was hoping he would respond with a 2-3 goal game and 12+ touches. Instead he got 0 and 6 and was subbed off.

I do think Chandler is at real risk of getting dropped this week.

Yeah I agree both are down on where they were earlier in the season.

Tough ask to play every week at this level in what effectively is their first decent stint in the senior side

I've re-watched the game up to 3/4 time (not that keen to proceed). I haven't seen an issue with McVee's game other than he doesn't get enough of the footy. When he does get it, he usually does something good to great with it. He makes few mistakes, is super clean and hits targets in good positions. He's just a young player trying to play his role. With experience and confidence, he'll take on the game more.

I also didn't see a lot wrong with Chandler's game other than low impact. There was no lack of endeavour/pressure and he didn't do a lot wrong when he was involved, but he just wasn't that involved. Whether that was his issue or symptomatic of how the game unfolded is another matter.

Long bombs over his head. Downfield, a lack of player awareness.

A great learning opportunity - what to do, how to read what to do, how to get into the game and beat your opponent. what to do next time - Badloss would love it. He could add it to his list of 'learnings' for the media briefings.

Good stuff BBP, I had a few poor choices of words myself on Sat.

I'd like to see how much time McVee spent guarding Schultz as he was pretty quiet.

And WCW!

Will never forget the final couple of minutes of this match. It’s right up there with Tmac’s winning goal vs WCE 2017 and Maxy’s winner after the siren, Round 23 2021.

I had bought concert tickets for this night months before and because of the stupid floating fixture didn’t realise there was a clash. I agonised over what to attend: my beloved Dees live at the ‘G in front of a big crowd or my all-time fave band (whom I’ve seen live several times but this tour was after a 13-year break). I was still undecided 24 hours beforehand.

I finally decided to go to the match. With a minute and 40 to go, with us needing two goals to win, my DA BFF leaned in and said, “do you regret blowing off the concert?” I was already crying but told her that no, I’m not regretting it. Truth is, it was shaping up to be the biggest regret in my entire life, (dramatic much?).  We all know what happened next. ❤️💙

Look WCW that’s all nice but I’m going to ask the question on everyones’ minds. Who was the band?

Yep it's right up there for me too. Few moments of high level elation quite like it.

Was hoping there might have been an encore on Saturday but not quite to be!

I’m loath to mention that lest I be berated for derailing the thread. But since you asked nicely, an Icelandic band called Sigur Rós. The best band ever there was since the dawning of mankind and even a couple of aeons before that. 😁

How can you even put a spotlight on this? The media seem complicit as the 360 panel don’t seem to care that much. If it was me, I’d be confused AF and telling everyone as much as anyone would care to listen.

How does the collective fan base hold the AFL to account?

They are part of the money making machine. You get tossed aside pretty quickly if you dare go against it. Ask Dale lewis or Michael Warner.

Why do you think TV commentators don't criticise umpires and decisions? Very rare when they do.

Vote with their feet. Unfortunately this hurts the clubs more than the AFL but it will happen regardless.

Carlton is mangled this coming Friday night. Loads of outs even Cripps will be playing on a dicky ankle. Forget Cerra. Its Carlton Corp at work with their QC's.

If we cant beat this mob its time to pack up and leave the building.

Having said that the umpires could be a concern expecially if they catch feelings. If its close we could be done for. The AFL is run by egomaniacs and they've mupped it. Media is virtually praising the  successful Cerra appeal. Media is corporate owned. They represent corporations not the paying public. I havent watched TV or cable or bought newspapers for many years. I get all my news from independent news platforms mostly American and some are privately backed. Way to go.

I just saw this on the Big Footy forum.  They're still in trauma from last year....

"I asked for this game for a reason. My psychologist says for me to be any chance of making a full recovery I have to confront the cause of my trauma, specifically the evening of Saturday the 13th of August 2022. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was at Optus watching a dreadful derby. I couldn’t find a tv anywhere in the stadium to watch our game so I ended up watch it on a phone with a young Blues fan I met that night. We laughed, we cried, we drank and then when big H took that mark on the wing we celebrated - we were back in the finals after 9 years of purgatory - alas I crowed early and paid the price. What transpired over the next 50 odd seconds I have watched so many times - sometime I think I watched it actually hoping for a different outcome - they are now forever etched in my memory. This game was the most heartbreaking loss I can remember since, ironically, our 2000 qualifying final loss to Melbourne. That it held that title for a whole 8 days until the following weeks capitulation against the Pies captures the essence what being a Carlton supporter has become."

The post from this point on goes on and on and on.  Quite a read

You have obviously never heard or seen the Doobie Brothers, who are the greatest band ever. Steely Dan the best studio band ever.

Getting back to the thread, I would love a smashing of Carlton and see the in fighting start in earnest.

That post was made before we lost to Freo.

Nonetheleess, the downbeat mood continued albeit with less intensity.  Our loss to Freo gave them some encouragement.  I'm waiting to see if it improves further after the Cerra decision and then post the 'What They Are Saying @ ...' thread; probably tomorrow.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
