Farewell James Harmes

Maxy swings down back sometimes… does that make him a backman?

The definition of a Tagger has changed over the last 20 years. Let’s call him a Nagger. A nullifying Tagger with the option to provide ball getting ability.

This is exactly how Harmes was played over many games.

Teams play to their structure these days. Tagging is outdated.

It’s an easy concept @beelzebub.

Go onto an opposition player. Stay close, block him, stop his running ability and running patterns, be physical, stop him from getting the ball. If he gets the ball, nullify his possession output by putting pressure on. Create turnovers.

When we have the ball. Provide an option, make him accountable, make sure your possessions hurt and turn his focus from attack to make him accountable. Putting him off his game.

A Nagger…. Harmes was good at it many times.

Haha this is gold.

We officially have a forum [censored] who thinks he understands an AFL players role better than the player themself. Harmes is quoted in an interview as saying his role is a tagger. But @The Jackson FIX knows better than coach and player.

You can’t make this up.

Take the L from the earlier debate and move on. It’s over. You lost.

You consider i don't understand the role of a tagger ?  Curious

Or you think i don't understand patterns?  Your prerogative.... i guess.

I "pondered" because i get Harmesy is multifaceted...capable of roles. Also Goody doesn't like tie down roles.

I'm "perhapsing" he might guard players in areas .He..being SG..maybe...hard to know

Footy is not one dimensional...and players must adapt and do their job.

I think ...tbh.. Mr H simply found his job replaced.  He's a club Premiership Champion.

I wish him luck and happiness.

He has done a number of effective run with roles over his career.  My personal favourite was the 2018 final against the Cats when he played on Selwood and drove him completely insane.  Probably one of Selwood's most undisciplined games in what was a very disciplined career.  Played well on Libba in 2021.  Has done less of it more recently.  I wish him well wherever he ends up and will be eternally grateful for his important role in breaking the drought.  He got to live out a boyhood dream.  His dad was president of the junior footy club I coached at before Jimmy got drafted and the family are Demon mad.  Will be an adjustment for them when he changes clubs!

I don’t know if it’s a problem on my end but I’d take Menegola > Harmesy every day of the week.

What are the other clubs seeing?

When Harmes is up and about, he has more strings to his bow IMO.

Can win his own ball, can spread, is good overhead and can kick a goal or play a shut down role. Sadly we just haven't seen it as much as we would have liked the last 2 years.

I'd like to know why we haven't seen his best recently? Does he lack motivation after the flag, or injuries? he has some great weapons which elevate him well above VFL standard...

What else could it be... your playing for a team you supported your whole life and got a chance at another flag, prove the selectors wrong and have the best preseason of your life and get back to being best 22. Would love him to stay and give it a red hot go..

Harmesy admitted he wasn’t in his best shape in 2022 but I think he gave it everything this year. Injuries played a role I’m sure.

But the motivation to back up when you’re stuck in coffin corner playing defensive half forward is hard to find.

Adams is VC and best 22 at the Pies and he’s had enough of it. He knows he plays another year, gets injured again and he’s on basement 1 year deals. So he’s off for 3 in Sydney.

Should we have made Harmesy a wing? Maybe, I always liked his potential in that role? Should we have prioritised him over Gus or Sparrow as on baller 4 or 5 as he was in the flag - possibly. But every chance we did the right thing and it was time for him to have a fresh start.

they tried him on the wing and half-back. and it just didn't work - on-baller rotating forward is his best role

and absolutely gus and sparrow are superior in the role over the last two years as 4 and 5; gus arguably was starting rotation in 2023

Harmes played the 2 finals last year on the wing but didn’t have a sustained run there since about 2017, I’m not convinced it would work, but I wonder if a team will try that with him next year.

Agree on the others but we never gave Harmes a string of games as his form and fitness never demanded it.

After their trade today, the dogs have 4, 38, 46, 51, 67, 70, 73.

If they want Harmes they might need to find something a bit earlier, unless we’re desperate to get him off the books. 38 feels a bit later than I’d like, but might be about correct weight.

The problem lying therein is that they’ll need points to match a bid on Croft.

Maybe it’s a F2nd, if they need 38 this year.

I recon 38 will be about right for Harmes, Don't think we will get a second rounder for him unless we pay some of his contract.

As much as I love Harmes he’s an inside bull. He doesn’t have the running capacity to play the wing in the modern game against McCluggage, Daicos, Bailey Smith, Walsh and players of that type.

About on par with Jordan, which 38 is

Jordon was compo though.  Not an offer from a club.  He is also 6 years younger than Harmes which changes the compo considerably.

If Harmes were to leave under free agency we wouldn't get anything.

I know. Leave aside the details and finer print, I'm just saying they're probably worth about as much as each other. Harmes at his peak probably had more strengths than Jordan who's relatively vanilla, but Jordan is younger...

Maybe, would be around correct weight for mine. But I’d rather it this year, as I expect we’ll get 10, then send 5, 10 & 13 to WC for pick 1, leaving us with precious little else.

Brown & Andrew with later picks, maybe an SVR to make up the numbers. We have a good few spots to fill.

Currently we have 5, 13, 26, 34, 40. I think we should expect 24 for Grundy.
A combination of 3 of 24, 26, 34, 40 & F1 should get us pick 10, maybe with change.

A decent return for Harmes would be helpful, but wouldn’t hold my breath.

Yeh, unfortunately he isn't at his peak.

Id be very happy if we got 38 for him

Geez he was a player in 2018 and 2019.

Not sure what happened. 9 average game this year. He decision making and skills at times are horrible but then he turns it around with something good

I hope he gets decent contract somewhere and maybe he can reinvigorate his career.

3rd rounder would be fair imo

Pick in the 30s is fair for Harmes. 38 would work. He’s 28 and has played over 150 games. He struggled this year due to personal reasons which saw him away from the club and football for a period of time. He’s not some no name who can’t play. He’d be in nearly every clubs best 22. I’d rather keep him as depth as he wouldn’t be on a big contract now, but if he wants to leave then pick 38 is fine.

Harmes for Toby McLean?  Very rare we see pure player swaps these days but id be happy with this.

No not needed we will only have one or 2 draft picks then. Tomlinson and Schache as required players baffles me. Doesn't give us much to play with.

McAdam for Jordon's pick and Fullerton for Harmes pick. Rookie Melksham. That leaves with Grundy's pick, pick 13, 26, 34 which we can package for pick for pick 10. In the draft we have picks 5 and 10 and K.Brown as a late pick and we'll have 1 rookie pick.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
