Another shoutout to my boy Chin Chandler. His 3rd bag of 3 goals now. 13 for the season. A goal in every single game. 2nd most goals for the Dees. 3 sausages behind Fritsch.

We had the luxury this week to experiment with a lot of different players running through the midfield. Do any of you have the stats ie: % of time in the midfield?

Gents

Can you discuss some of the experiments we saw on Sat night?

Did I see Clarry in defensive positions?

Trac as 'resting' forward, Bowey pushed forward (ala Brayshaw 2022).

We seemed to give us a chance to throw all these exotic strategies.

What are your thoughts on JVR 4 games in? Personally I like what I have seen so far, granted he still has room for improvement.

This is a bit of general question not specific to this game, but which of our players do you guys think gets the most out of himself with the least natural footballing talent? (I mean this in a complimentary way!) Thought this might generate some discussion from a different angle. Keep up the great work.

Is there a time and place for handballing along the ground?

We spoke about it last week. Hunter added a new trick to his arsenal this week; the underground kick.

In our losses (and the first half against Richmond) opposition mids seemed to sit outside our mids, waiting for us to get first possession and then scragging/tackling us to cough it up and ultimately lose the clearance. With such prolific ball winners like Oliver, Trac and Viney whose instinct is to get first hands on the footy what can we do to combat that when we come up against the better teams? We dont want to give up front position at the contest but we don't want to be sitting ducks either so how do we maximise the talent we have in the middle? I have no doubt we will see similar tactics used when we come up against the Pies, Saints, Crows and Cats.

Good pick up!

Nibbler must have our tackle of the season to date with that run down of Luke McDonald in our goal square - it was a thing of beauty.

I want to know whether the boys think that Collingwood's (one point) win was more meritorious than Melbourne's 90 pt effort, whether North should go south, and is there finally a case for Mud Island to have their own team - provided that they can achieve an AFL standard field. More seriously, is the current mis-match of teams going to seriously compromise this year's finals series?

Guys, I'm trying to get my head around our stoppage clearances. We have arguably the two best ruckmen in the game as well as arguably the best midfield yet we are ranked last in stoppage clearance. I feel this is more of a tactical play rather than a flaw with the gameplan. Goody, in my opinion, is more concerned with how we set up post clearance and is comfortable with allowing the opposition to bring extra numbers to the stoppages.

Although Clarry, Trac, Viney, and Sparrow are having fantastic seasons and are contested beasts, their stoppage clearance rankings are significantly lower this season. Clarry was ranked #1 last year and is currently ranked #32 this year. I have also noticed with interest that in the Tigers' premiership years of '20 and '21 they were also ranked last and second last in this metric. What is your take on this?

I'm positive Binman will have an answer to this. @binman, save it for the podcast. 😜

Lovr the fast moving game we are playing as well as the control we are showing under preasure.

Will there be changes to the main squad this week?

Im a little worried about Harmes did not get a lot of time on the field but what i saw he was not quite 100%.

But then played a good game for Casey the next day.

Great poddie guys keep up the great work.

This week on Choco Watch we were once again very accurate in front of the big sticks. Love this from Wheelo Ratings.

Need to get Big Maxxy back in the Academy. He's the only one that is regularly letting us down in front of goals.

As always loving the podcast boys.

I was on Steven May niggle watch again this week. Thought he was moving a little bit better this week but there were a couple times I thought he had trouble bending over. Other than that he was simply superb in the air. Such courageous marking. If there is an issue with his back he certainly won't shirk going back into a contest.

Another quality podcast last week guys.

With Petty and Spargo presumably out of concussion protocols, TMac & BBB another week at Casey under their belts, Melksham kicking a bag of goals who would want to be a selector?

Who's coming in and who's going out?

Loving the question and answer format of the podcast this season. Kudos to all involved.

I'm starting to get the same annoying jibes from workmates that like last year we simply haven't beaten anyone yet and have lost games to our contenders. Are you worried about anything you've seen from the side. Does our game stack up against other teams particularly those of Collingwood and Geelong who look like the sides to beat? Or will we not know until Kings Bday and our annual fun trip down the freeway to Kardinia Park.

I think there is a feeling that we will just rock up and roll the Suns but I think this could be a danger game if we don't come switched on to play. The Suns have taken it right up to a few teams and have fallen away in the last quarter. Miller is a massive out for them but we should not take them too lightly. What do you guys think we need to do to bank the 4 points.

No question from me this week. Just want to express my enjoyment of the pods, and my strong appreciation of the time and effort that you guys put into making them so good, week in, week out!  Go Dees!

Main comment from me... KOZZY!! 🥳💙

Any comments on how we have most of our stars locked into contract and a beautiful premiership window sparkling ahead of us for the next few years?

Love your work, guys!  Missing the live poddy as I'm on the train back to Sydney... but I'll listen tomorrow!

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
