Those post game espresso martinis tasted extra good tonight. Never tire of beating that bunch of NQR's. We weren't great for much of the night but they were playing for their season and we've effectively ended it.

Had no idea at the game what this 50 was for.

apparently, there is a protected area behind the man on the mark, which Lever enters to give away the 50. 

So, is it like running between the mark, a Richmond player could have entered the restricted area behind the man on the mark?

Having just read the rest of this thread apparently it has to do with anyone moving that's within a 5 metre radius of the kicker but as Lever wasn't the person standing the mark the decision was mind boggling. You'll be lucky to see it getting paid again this year.

No, It's as simple as the protected area also extends to behind the player manning the mark. 5 metres back, 10 metres either side (so in total a box 5m deep x 20m wide).

If an oppo player enters that (unless to stick with one of the other teams players) it's a 50. Same as the rest of the protected area at any other time.

Here's the picture of the protected area again for people that have missed it.

The "No player can enter this area" is a bit misleading as players of the same team of the player who took the mark CAN enter the protected area. It should say "No player of the opposition can enter this area". I think. I don't know anymore. I've read these rules too many times today and I've confused myself even.

What I do know is that Lever wasn't allowed to. He did and in a way that wasn't subtle.

Difficult to take Hardwick's comment seriously. They've lost 3 in a row despite apparently knowing how to beat us. If they can just run a game for longer than 12 quarters maybe they'll execute enough though. Really, tonight should not have been so close but for some (or many) dubious decisions.

Interesting comment by Jordy Lewis in the post match about the rotation of midfielders very Geelong like, saving bodies of the main midfield group for the second half and finals.

Make sense on why we are losing the midfield more that we did last year.

Just watched the replay/caught up with this thread while you lot slept. Certainly share the collective disdain for the umpires. That non-50 (and likely goal) to ANB and the HTB against Gus when he got boot to ball…dearie me. There has to be an agenda, even if subconscious.

Today was never going to be straightforward against a desperate opponent and on a big stage.  Richmond have had a tough draw and they could yet see off some of our rivals down the stretch. And Freofall of course.

Today was a struggle but we ground out the win when challenged so credit where it’s due.  I’m still buzzing anyway, particularly after last week.

I thought Sparrow played his best game for the year.

Nibbler was good too.

I was lamenting our fwd line issues but I feel better now after Jvrs fantastic last quarter.

He needs another tall to help out . I don't think it's Petty and its not Tmac.

Grundy has been good but it astounds me that a man his size can take only one mark for the whole game. This stat is no outlier and it's a worrying part of his game.

Pickett needs to stop those specky attempts and get back to crumbing.

Jv is back to his best.

Loving Chandler and Mcvee.

Max makes such a difference.

I know I bang on about the umpiring but it wasn't the soft frees the tigers got time after time, it was the great ammount of frees we should have got but didn't. 

On the rare occasion we received a free, the umps blew the whistle very late, almost as if they didn't want to. Sometimes only after all the players had stopped.  It was an atrocious effort on their part.

It wasn't a pretty game but the Tigers had lost two in a row and threw everything at us. They tackled hard and played fast.  

In the end I think our fitness prevailed. It's interesting that we have won every last quarter this year. Now we just have to work on winning the first and second more often.

Obviously Max is a better mark than Grundy, but look closely and you'll see Grundy hardly ever loses a hit out, his go is his follow up ground work and centre clearance. Hopefully with more time working with the midfield we can turn that into a huge advantage. We're not capitalising as well as we should at this stage.

I'm not faulting Grundys rucking. He's very good.  I also think he's pretty good at ground level. I just think one mark for tge game isn't good from a ruckman. Even with Max out he's struggled taking marks little own contested ones. If he can be more of a successful go to target it would really make a difference.

Universal truths . . . death, taxes, and many 'Landers who:

1. refuse to acknowledge, appropriately, the good planning and play of the opposition when a game is close
2. are in denial that umpiring has been for decades, and always will be, dodgy, and that that will never change
3. forget that they have no idea of the deep inner workings of a footy club and the plans and strategies players, coaches, game strategists and fitness staff are trying to execute and implement.

Sometimes a broader and deeper perspective can be helpful.
