Judging from the comments I have read today it appears that Turner should get a go in front of Tommo

I think it depends on who's out from the Seniors. Tomlinson is a lock-down defender. He's a naural (although clearly inferior) replacement for May. The problem last week was he was brought in as a replacement for Lever and he can't play that role. So Tomlinson for May, Turner for Lever.

Thought Dunstan deserves a go espcially if Sparrow is underperforming. Brown and McDonald looked average, is a problem we need to get sorted going forward as both look a bit old. Tomlinson needs to see a psychologist, he is shocking out there at the moment.

Sparrow should stay in ahead of Dunstan imo. Sparrow has continuing upside and Dunstan is pure depth.

Went along today and all I'll say is that as disappointing a loss as today was for Casey, it was as equally an impressive win for Richmond. Winning at Casey Fields is not easy, and they ran and spread really well from contest to contest while nullifying our run. They were also very accurate in front of goal, at one stage being 14.4 while at one point we were 2.10. That there was the game.

My take outs from this week.

1. James Harmes has given himself every chance of a recall. He was clearly our best and competed all day.

2. Casey's senior players are very important. No Munro, no White and no Buntine today and Casey lost. There should have been enough AFL experience out there to cover, however you could tell that senior core was still missed. Especially Munro.

3. Top heavy Casey. Today Casey went in with Bell in the ruck, Farris-White 2nd ruck, Brown, McDonald, Jefferson and Sestan forward. As a result Richmond ran the ball out of the back line with ease and got to 28 points in front. Casey started to get back into it once McDonald moved into the ruck  and Casey ensured they always had at least 2 of Bell, Farris-White, Brown, Jefferson or McDonald on the bench and improved their run across the ground. This could mean we won't see Bell with Casey for a while.

4. Bad kicking = Bad football. Casey had more scoring shots and could have easily won had they converted better. Mean while Richmond converted most opportunities and deserved their victory.

Until next time.

I think Demons supporters are overreacting. A 12 point loss is not a disaster, given who we were missing. The top level VFL players are crucial as they actually care how Casey perform, they're not playing for their future in the AFL system. Jimmy Munro for me is the most important player in the Casey side, ahead of any Melbourne-listed player.

Early days but I'm not seeing much to enthuse from Jefferson.

Just doesn't really get involved.

I agree. Clearly after 5 games in the VFL we should write him off as having no future. Seriously!

I've only read your "fire back", as a challenge to debate. Haven't read a word where you do personal attacks.

Some are very defensive/protective of our players, and know many players families read demonland.

My advice would be to do twice as many positive opinions as honest negative one's. WCW is a sweet person, if you also show the positive, I think she would be more supportive. Her feedback showed that, when you were positive about one of my posts.

Thanks Kev, and I certainly do appreciate when 3165 posts an opinion without being overly negative. I hope it can be the rule rather than the exception. 👍🏽

Dunstan missed some quite simple hit ups. Those turnovers will kill us at AFL level. Sparrow has a good kick, and is getting better the more his confidence rises. Agree, that he appears to be struggling, but he may be playing his team role well. At the captain's run today, they were using Tom as an outside runner/ball receiver (unusual, as he is usually in and under/around).

Dunstan is good for the development of young players, like Woey and AMW, at those stoppages.

Dunstan has a solid body of work going back to last year. I reckon he should get 2-3 games on the trot.

Sparrow (along with ANB) seems to be a protected species.  I like him but he is one of the " second stringers" that always goes missing when we play poorly.

This was a big problem today...with BBB and Tommy, the Tiges just walked the ball out with ease.

There wasn't much forward pressure at all and it needed to start with the senior players.

And this is why I think we’ve seen the last of BBB and Tmac in the same forwardline. With how fast teams are moving the ball now, we cannot have two lumbering forwards. I will continue to favour BB over Tmac because he is harder to defend aerially, but Tmac does give us more flexibility.

If you want a less athletic tall forward, then Gawn at FF is it. At least he won’t ever get out marked.

It would not have been easy with BBB and Tmac, as it seemed they wanted to play through them a majority of the time and as a young player he might have been a bit intimidating in not wanting to get in the way, so to speak.

Of course you are right there...and that's part of what bothers me.

To make it as an AFL KPF you really have to back yourself in. You really need that confidence that you are the man...

Senior player or not, he is playing for his football life and needs to take the opportunity otherwise end up like Lucas Cook...nice guy, could play a bit but not cut out for it.

He's going to be an interesting watch.

I think that was pretty obvious today...JVR already gives us a better aerial contest and is better defensively.

Looks like Petty might have the forward gig until we can find someone else.

Turner would be the next up after today I would think, probably would have played if the Tiges didn't have injuries to talls.

How true, and that is the coaches job to instill confidence, back yourself in, but you are right  a football career is a very short one for a lot of players.

If JVR can fix up his marking technique, he will be one fine player for us, because he has good follow up and likes the contact and that's what's needed in the forward line.

Watched the game today.

I made comments after the Essendon game that the likes of McDonald and Tomlinson should not pull on the red and blue jumper again unless we are depleted with injury.

On today's performance I'd be happy for them to stay at Casey for the rest of the year regardless. For senior players that was pretty woeful performance on their standard.

They've given us great service especially McDonald, but they honestly cooked.

Not many winners there today. Dunstan and Harmes the only two that can hold their head up high. Dunstan needs to be rewarded for form. Absolute joke that Sparrow has done nothing since 2021 and gets a free ride while guys like Dunstan and Laurie are putting on consistent performance at VFL level for little reward this year.

Missing the likes of Buntine, White and Munro will always cost you at VFL level. These guys are the absolute heartbeat of the team and drive high standards.

I counted 3 AFL listed players for Richmond today compared to ours which had 14 AFL listed players. So yes, very embarrassing loss. Hopefully this doesn't flow onto Tomorrow night.

My problem with Harmes is his decision making, he has a habit of trying to take everyone on or gives it to a player who is in an even worse position, runs hard when he has the ball but not so much when he doesn't, as for Dunstan I actually thought he would add value but seems to have lost a yard and his disposal has only been fair.

My thinking is we have to many one sort of paced players in the guts, Trac, Viney, Sparrow are all one pace players, Oliver has decent pace, kossie is not a midfielder in my opinion yet.

Yeah look maybe, but at the end of the day someone like Dunstan has been performing week in and week out. He deserves too get rewarded for that alone.

I'm sick to death of the same blokes getting rewarded at AFL level for sub par performances each week.

I mean I look at Laurie and just think the poor bloke couldn't have done any more to put himself at the front of selectors for his performance on over thr past few weeks but yet he's been pushed aside once again.

This is my line of thinking also.

As in, aside from teams that have talls missing up forward, we will be robbing Peter to pay Paul by playing Petty forward without an in form Disco coming in ASAP

No fair point, sorry Turner was good as well and another who's been pushing for selection for the past 3 weeks.

He was one that was really missed today as he does use the ball well.

Not yet, but needs a bit more time in there to develop.

I hope they push his midfield minutes up a bit as it gives us some more versatility.

Looks like a sub option but I would have brought him straight in for Spargo. Plays half forward but another player that can go into the midfield and give us a different look.

Terrible commentator. I think her elocution teacher may have been Kellie Underwood. Grey has played almost every game for 3 seasons...one of the better players today, but called seston the whole game. Similarity nil.

Tmac and Brown are both contracted until the end of next year so whilst they are both on the list there probably isn't room for another forward.

Depends on who and when - Georgiadis from Port has been talked up a bit (though there were also some rumours today that he could have a serious knee injury).

easier said than done - he would, if he put his name up, go into the draft and we have no special claims on our VFL team.

"...Sparrow has done nothing since 2021 and gets a free ride...."   I think that I a bit over the top.  He is a hard worker, strong tackler, and is the future, unlike Dunstan who is definitely a back up.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs.
