D'landers, as you may remember I am a foreign supporter and still wrapping my head around all things footy.

Can you help me understand the influence areas/zones of the Victorian teams? 

I know of course there are some straightforward answers like Collingwood, Essendon or Richmond. 

But , is the west really a Bulldogs only area?

Where are most Dees supporters located? Perhaps I should move there 🤔

They used to be called Footscray and along with Essendon are really the only true western suburb teams. 

A lot of these teams used to have their own footy grounds outside of the G / Marvel in their respective suburban areas. So the fans were really based in the respective areas / zones. Nowadays i think most of that is all but disappeared with exception to Geelong and the interstate teams. 

As for Melbourne supporters, i'd love to know as well, but i suspect you'll find a concentration in the South East to bayside suburbs.

Supporters are scattered all over the place. The old days of class distinction linked to geography, industry and residence have long gone. When I worked in the West I was surprised how few Doggies supporters there were. It seemed that Locals were more likely to follow Pies and Bombers. As you say the Cats are the exception with its inbred following. Interstate clubs another case in point. Dees supporters tend to congregate in the leafy suburbs SE and East. In central and north central, Tigers and Bombers proliferate but there are still plenty of grey haired Demons.

Tram and train lines were important as Melbourne grew post the two world wars. The inner city areas emptied out as the residents of the time  moved further out with Carlton and Fitzroy becoming home to the immigrants from Italy and Greece.

North Melbourne was an exception in that it went industrial so it did not really benefit from the influx of migrants to the extent of say Carlton.

MFC arguably were hampered by the concept of MCC membership and its waiting list. Why did we not attract the new immigrants from the surrounding areas. Fitzroy was only a short walk.

Big post war numbers came to Dandenong to work in the car industry. Wonder who they ended up following

The older suburbs in the West are really only Footscray, Maribyrnong, Seddon, Sunshine, St Albans and a few select others. As well as Yarraville and Williamstown but they had/have VFA (now VFL) teams. 

Many of the western suburbs you see today: Taylor’s Lakes, Caroline Springs, Point Cook are modern inventions and people there are less likely to support a team based on location. Though the dogs will still be well represented.

For other teams it’s mostly self explanatory how they grew but it’s certainly changed now.

Collingwood has huge support through the Mernda and Hurstbridge train lines as they went by Vic Park. You can trace those trains on Google maps.

Hawthorn capitalised through the outer east for similar reasons with Glenferrie and Waverley Park. They also had a recruiting zone in the Mornington Peninsula.

The Saints bayside.

North were landlocked by Essendon. Fitzroy surrounded on all sides.

Carlton and Essendon do well in the Northern suburbs.

Richmond went a bit everywhere. North, South East.

But Brighton, Glen Iris, Malvern, Camberwell are some of the areas that represent our wealthier fans. Some of that is stereotyping but the MCC, top end of town aspect of our club is real.

The other major area that we are well represented in is in and around Bentleigh. We had the Bentleigh club, the local team is the Bentleigh demons and many of our players did live in the area.

I live on the western side of town and there's definitely a high proportion of Doggies supporters here. I used to work in Armadale but the office moved to Malvern recently and there's a lot of Dees bumper stickers on cars in both areas. There were also a lot of houses decorated there during GF week in '21 and a digital billboard put up by the local council I think wishing us luck so that's probably our heartland.

Most of the original clubs were founded in the late 19th century (either VFL or VFA) when mobility was limited and footy grounds were in the heart of each suburb/team and within walking distance.

St Kilda - Junction Oval; South Melbourne - Lakeside Oval; Fitzroy - Brunswick St; Essendon - Windy Hill; Footscray - Geelong Rd; Richmond - Punt Rd; Coll - Victoria Park; Hawthorn - Glenferrie; North Melbourne - Arden St; Carlton - Princess Park.; Geelong - Kardinia Park. Melbourne were the only exception to the suburban link presumably due to the influence of the MCC.

In time, the geographic connections were stretched and broken as the population expanded and moved further out. So in time the direct connection between supporters and suburbs became less important.

Basically every logo in Victoria should be smaller and closer to the Melbourne logo bar Geelong

The last time my car was stolen it was found by the police sitting in the driveway of a house in Melton. They told me they just happened to be driving past and suspected it was stolen since it was plastered in MFC stickers. 😂

Mount Baw Baw, Toorak, Kew, all the elite suburbs, only joking mostly white affluent suburbs, not really mate, a long time ago clubs were aligned with suburbs because the used to get players from there area that played in the their thirds side the U19's.

The night was going swimingly, alot of fun was being had by all.

Romsey's local country girls were quite hospitable to say the least.

A few more frothies later and before i knew it it was almost time to hit the road (designated driver had seen enough lol).

However, just as i had finally worked up the courage to ask for her number, she decided she had downed enough amber fluid herself.  So much in fact that she kindly shared a massive projectile vomit with anyone close to her.

And that ladies and gentleman was the end of that little escapade.

My introduction to footy was at North Williamstown State School circa 1962 when Wednesdays in the footy season saw everyone roll up in their team’s jumper for afternoon PE.   Everyone except the dumb pom, that is.  Anyway, the playground was an absolute sea of Footscray jumpers, with a smattering of Seagulls and a few others. There was just one Demon jumper despite Melbourne being very good at the time.  At least there were two the following week. 😁

I think now days it's more about who your parents support or who is winning. My 12-year-old stepson was a Collingwood supporter when I met him, as that's who his dad supported, then changed to Richmond while they were winning. He had a brief stint with Carlton last year as his school teacher was a huge Carlton fan and now he says he doesn't support anyone. My stepdaughter on the other hand didn't support a team when I met her she was too young and now she is in love with Gawny, and my 2 year old son is a baby demon in more ways than one and will forever be a demon.

I actually started life out as a Fitzroy lions supporter as that's who my dad went for but didn't really follow footy at the time and then they were merged with Brisbane I lost all interest for about 5 years. When footy started getting my interest again, yze, Robbo, neitz and the like we're playing and I really liked the cut of their jib, so I started supporting the demons. My mum and sister are Essendon supporters for life, hence why I have a soft spot for the Don's.

I grew up in Bundoora so no ties to any club, support in the area was a massive mix of every team.
