Sounds like Howes is coming along really well and, God forbid, should we get some injuries in the wing / halfback areas he could be just about ready to go. But certainly nobody will get left out of these positions next round. 1 Quote
dee-tox 4,835 Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Howes, a lazy 33! Love this. Anyone watch the game to give a bit more context? 2 Quote
spirit of norm smith 16,679 Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Really pleased to see good mix of Dees AFL listed group and Casey players. With an 11/11 combo this week , lots of good signs from youngsters at Casey. Sheridan looked like he’s going to be a good addition. 2 Quote

Demonland 74,431 Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 PERFECT by KC from Casey The conditions were perfect as the reigning VFL premiers played host to the Sydney Swans under sunny skies at Casey Fields and the Demons continued their perfect start to the season with a comprehensive 41-point victory on Sunday. On a day when the winds eluded the vicinity of the ground, Casey were quick out of the blocks with the opening two goals of the game but Sydney fought back and were more than competitive for most of the opening term. They kicked three quick goals to take a seven point lead as time on ticked by before a couple of late goals gave the home team a six point lead at the break. From then on however, it was a dominant Casey which took complete control of proceedings. They were untroubled as they squeezed the life out of the visitors who were allowed just two late goals in junk time after a barren hour of goalless toil. It was a satisfying victory for new Casey coach Taylor Whitford because his team this week was a far cry from the experienced combination that his predecessor took the club to a premiership in 2022. With veteran skipper Mitch White still out with injury and the number of AFL listed players available down to eleven, expectations before the start were tempered. Only four of the Melbourne aligned players had any AFL experience. One of the four, Bailey Laurie, has only one AFL game under his belt and he was out of this game in the second half. The pleasing side of the equation was the outstanding efforts of the team’s youth. Newly recruited forwards Matt Jefferson (4 goals) and Oliver Sestan (2) were impressive with their ability to score goals themselves as well as assist others while utility Blake Howes had his biggest afternoon yet, playing all over the ground amassing 33 disposals and taking 16 marks. Andy Moniz-Wakefield and Deakyn Smith continue to impress and rookie defender Kye Turner had some promising moments. The young brigade was not limited to the AFL youngsters. The likes of Max Gregory, Miles Shepherd and Tom Sheridan (two goals on debut) contributed to the overall effort. Casey was well served by its experienced players. Adam Tomlinson (33 disposals 13 marks) was rock solid in defence while Tom McDonald (20 touches, 11 marks and 2 goals) did his chances of a quick return to the AFL no harm and Luke Dunstan was also prolific in the middle. He was capably assisted by evergreen Jimmy Munro who was his hard tackling mean self. George Grey was busy all day and Matt Buntine was solid in defence. The Demons remain undefeated at this early stage of the season and play host to Frankston in the local derby next Sunday afternoon. Here’s hoping for another perfect afternoon. Supreme_Demon 4,141 Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Great to see both Matthew Jefferson and Blake Howes have excellent games for the Casey Demons in the VFL. Developing very nicely! If they keep it up with consistent performances they may both earn chances to debut in the Senior AFL side later in the year. Either way, there is no intense pressure on them and they can simply go about just playing footy in the VFL until they are ready for the next step up to AFL. 3 Quote

I watched the full game and Howes did play well. He was very neat, I expect his disposal efficiency was high, but lacked dare with his possessions. A lot of uncontested play out of the back half and most of his kicks would be been short chips. Regardless, it was very good signs for the future. Tomlinson was a clear BOG. McDonald next best IMO, excellent contested marking and was aggressive in playing on (which didn't always come off but I think it is how Goody wants them playing). His kicking was off early but improved. Monro was typically excellent. Typical Dunstan game (plenty of ball but wasteful). AMW and Sestan had their moments. Laurie played confidently. Great game for Jefferson but he is still a long way from AFL level due to his lack of strength. Smith and K Turner were pretty good without standing out. Adams has a long way to go IMO but had a few nice touches. 4 1 Quote

He is coming from a minor league, so those coming through the TAC system have a head start. Give him a full year at Casey and a pre season and this kid could be special. High footy IQ and a natural forward. Very excited to see how good he will be. 2 1 Quote

MrFreeze 2,055 Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 Jefferson and JVR will be a great duo in years to come. JVR is the perfect crunching forward like McKay and Hawkins. While Jefferson will replace Brown as our lanky lead up forward. Quote
DeeSpencer 26,675 Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 (edited) Had time to watch the replay and agree with others that it was a solid but unspectacular Casey performance. Probably more of a win for their system than individual player performances. The midfield was probably about even on the day. Dunstan and Munro were certainly prolific but didn't exactly break the game open. Laurie had a bit of time on ball in the first half and had some quality moments, seemed to play forward in the 3rd then leave at 3/4 time. A lot of baldy the Baldi after that. And George Gray was solid all day and I'm convinced there's lesser talents on AFL lists. Buntine, Steele and McRae the wing rotation. Buntine might be a very good coach if he's as smart as he plays. Backline were excellent. Really liked the Casey duo of Shep and Gregory. Jed Adams was tested early by Aaron Francis but battled in to it. Tomlinson wasn't perfect on McLean but he won his share of direct contests and then did very well as the sweeper. K Turner had some good moments. Whilst most of Howes' marks came from team mates I did think he looked strong in some ground ball contests especially early and he positioned well to receive the ball. His kicking was safe but quick. It wasn't quite a demand to be picked game like Hibbo's last week but it was certainly well worth taking notice of. Up forward, Sestan - classy and smart if not involved a heap. Jefferson - the 3 of the 4 goals we could actually see were as soft as they come. No idea about the 4th that occurred with the screen offline. But he had one strong inside 50 mark pinched by AMW, one mark taken by the umps for what I thought was a push in the side and a couple of nearly grabs. Speaking of AMW I thought he displayed the most talent of anyone on the ground. His ability to win a contest on the ground or in the air was excellent and he just needed to tidy it up a touch. Tommy Mc dominated Gould in the air as he should and led up well, but unfortunately his disposal was largely junk. He never takes the quick handball option and loves the big U turn or the fend and his field kicking radar was mostly absent. Good to get him some touches but probably needs at least another week to start doing something with them because he should've been dominant. Edited April 3, 2023 by DeeSpencer 3 Quote
Diamond_Jim 12,773 Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 Next week is Frankston on Sunday so we will be missing four AFL players who will go to Perth as emergencies. Should be a win but assuming Tomlinson and TMac travel it will give the young ones a chance to shine 1 Quote
