As a tool to enhance entertainment and atmosphere it certainly has the opposite affect. There was nothing quite like the feeling you get at the 'G when the crowd noise exponentially rises at the first bounce. That has been largely killed off as we are forceable silenced with inane music and countdowns.

I also wonder if it has some impact on the players mindset as well. The crowd is a powerful voice that can act as a 19th player. One moment that sticks in my mind is being at the ground for that great come from behind win against freo in 2008. It was only a paltry crowd, and I believe they even closed off the third level to keep costs down. We ended up chasing down a 50-odd point deficit after half time with the crowd going absolutely wild with each goal, as sadness and disappointment melted away to excitement and celebration. Each goal we piled on, the noise seem to go up a notch to almost sound like a full house.

It felt like we willed the team onto victory that day while no doubt sowing seeds of pressure and doubt into the minds of freo players. I hope these moments aren't drowned out by artificial noise pollution.

I understand that “game day experience” may need to be enhanced at NFL and NBL with extraneous sound effects and shouted commentary, but Australian Rules Football is exciting in its own nature and doesn’t need this.  Dimitriou and Gil seem to have an obsession with all things American.

Gawd, I still remember brief visions of that absurd preseason charade they tried a decade or so ago with the flares and loud  “music” and other “special effects”  - I endured a few minutes of it once when the TV remote had an unexpected problem delaying my finding something else to watch.

PS do we still have to endure the “air raid siren” at EssUndone home games when they kick a goal?  Even more incentive for our defenders to keep them goalless.

It's a win for the attention span society..

It goes down well with the all the other antics at the bog bash t20 games so the crowd doesn't realise it's not as interesting as Afl.

Well I don't know what the song is called, but I just heard someone say it was hells Bells a long time ago.

I prefered it when we ran out to either cheers or the grand old flag. Not a song trying to sound scary and foreboding!

I guess I'm getting old now!

You do know our nickname is the Demons, don't you?

Seriously, though, I liked the Hells Bells, I thought it was a great level of intimidation to opposition fans.  It set a great atmosphere.

I think they need to bring in the player introductions like they do with the NBA, that would be so awesome and we wouldn't have to shout go number 7 coz there'd be no excuse to not know the players names! 🙄

There's some clubs that do this, I think the Doggies did it at Marvel last year from memory.

As long as each intro doesn't take as long as NBA for 22 players then I'd be for it 😄

Dundee's nickname is the Dees. Aberdeen takes it's name from the river Dee but they are known as the Dons after the river Don. Both of which run through the Granite City.

BTW I also hate the music played after a goal and between each quarter.

I seem to recall when this issue was in the media last year, no-one wanted to own the decision as to who decided that music was a good idea. I think the AFL said it was the Ground Manager (ie, the MCC) and the Ground Manager said they had outsourced the match day ground management to an outside company. In short, no-one likes it and no-one wanted to own up to authorising it.  Nothing's changed - it's still a lousy idea.

As an aside, the AFL has allowed breaks between goals to extend from 30 seconds to about 40-45 seconds, presumably to satisfy Channel 7 so it can run ads and replays of the goal. I wouldn't mind bringing the break back to 30 seconds. After all, everyone seems to be saying that games go too long and if a game has, say, 27 goals, that's an additional 6.75 minutes tacked on for no good reason.

Yes we are but the Dees has become common usage on the street.

True fact ... When I see someone wearing a Demons cap or other garment (not at the footy) I usually say "go Dees" rather than "morning", "g'day" etc to that person. It is invariably met with a good response.

Exactly, happened this morning in a local supermarket when I saw an old guy wearing a 2007 Demons jacket. He responded to my Go Dees greeting to tell me that he had been a member for 70 years.

Sad times Ernie

Imagine how sad if we had merged with Hawthorn to become The Dawks.
Guard your history, traditions and culture closely. Without it we are nothing. Which would have been the case if we had merged. That time in our history must never be forgotten.

I doubt I would be a Supporter of the Merger if it had proceeded.
I definitely wouldn’t have been financial. I would never give a cent to Hawthorn.
I would have checked the scores to see who won and no more

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
