Thanks @goodwindees, great mail!

Hard to see how they wouldn’t, but would be interested to see how the deal effects any Ben McKay deal.

Both sides widely reported as being well into McKay. Does Sydney still offer enough to trigger band 1 compo? If Essendon lose Parish, but get McKay, will they still sign as an FA and dilute any Parish compensation?

If they lose Parish and get Ben McKay you can gaurentee they will trade for him, especially if they get band 1 comp. No way they'll want to dilute a top 10 pick

Parish is a low damage accumulator for mine that I wouldn't be paying 5 x 800k for. Maybe he's valued that way by some clubs. Perhaps I have a biased view with self interest more at heart and don't want any further dilution of the draft pool and competition for GCs pick 4. Bombers will have picks 8 and 9 and arguably better placed to get that pick.

I agree - looking at their last few games, they are in a world of pain: shocking effort.

Looks like Tommo, Harmes, Grundy and maybe Jordan will be finding new homes next year.

Yes and the reality is that what we draft in from other clubs will probably be not as good but this is what happens when you have a relatively closed first 22/23.

Not sure how it could be better handled but 4 cusp players leaving other than by retirement seems high.

Throw in the possible retirement of Hibberd, BBB and even Melksham and TMac, you have big turnover

it's a disaster for them if he stays

zerrett and ellen don't work particularly well together, and their next emerging mids - see tstatas - are also very small

they've already got mids playing half-back (mcgrath) or vfl (shiel) who are also on the smaller side

it'll click occasionally, but they're all ball-hunters and none of em work hard enough defensively nor - with the possible exception of zerrett - have the footskills to be damaging with the ball in hand

i heard a good comparison the other day, that flagmantle with serong and andy brayshaw are at risk of having their best two mids being the equivalent of zerrett and ellen - really good players who just don't do enough damage and are too small to compete against the bigger bodies that command most powerhouse midfields in modern football

Agree. Futures to be considered for fringe or older players … Dunstan, Laurie, Hibberd, BBB, Melksham,TMac, Tommo, Harmes, Grundy and Jordon.  Can’t see all going but probably half of this group will be traded, delisted or seek better opportunities elsewhere

I'd forgotten Dunstan but you're right.. that's another as is Laurie.

I rate Parish. I think he's been poorly coached and developed.

A bit like Merrett actually. They're both low damage accumulators. But they both need to develop their intercept and defensive game. Very doable.

Essendon are an interesting watch for mine. They could well have a resurgence next year, out of nowhere, if Scott gets the coaching right.

If they lose Parish and he goes to a better system, I reckon he'll become a gun that he showed glimpses of in 2021.

Zero chance Laurie gets delisted, shows promise and will develop further next year IMO.

Hopefully BBB retired, Hibbo likely also.

Yes agree. Laurie was more in the “looking for opportunities elsewhere” category . I think he stays. He showed his skills and footy ability in 2nd half v hawks and was unlucky to be omitted imv.

Would North have any interest in Grundy?
Goldy, is 35 and slow.
Could we offer Pick 5, 16 + Grundy for Harley Reid..?

Ask yourself this: Would Grundy have any interest in North?

The answer is NO

Good luck to Geelong who have next to zero trade currency

With LDU, Zuurhar, Wardlaw and McDonald back in and more young talent drafted and Brayden George to come they will improve rapidly.

Grundy would be number one ruck and they have super coach.

He has apparently bought a new house in Melbourne and Arden street would be a lot closer than Kitty Litter stadium.

He might be interested if asked.

Pick 8 is a good start.

Not really, because they won’t want to give that up and it may not be enough alone.

More importantly, they’d be mortgaging their future on a player that will flame out brilliantly.

I hope they go for it.

You said they have nothing to trade with, “ next to zero trade currency” and when it is shown they do , you then say “ oh they won’t want to give that up”. Pick 8 is not next to zero

They do have something to trade with and Dogs would want 8 and Cats can do what they like, keep it or pay for Smith.

Yeah, cool pedantry.

Beyond pick 8 which they obviously won’t want to give up, they have zero trade currency (without mortgaging their future, which I didn’t think needed to be pointed out).

Would love to see the cats get Smith, but can’t see it happening.

He is 29. Chances of him winning a flag with North are close to zero.

Might need to do some work with GC first to facilitate the trade. Just assumption on my part.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
