What's perplexing about it? He is coverage and on low $...and has a contract.  It's not even slightly perplexing.

You can't delist everyone you think is a bit average every post season.

Sometimes you keep people on, because they have been in the system for a long time, they know the grind, they adhere to training protocols and they're good club folk.

Did you watch him play this year?

Interestingly we have freed up a $mill in CAP space.

Its been mooted by posters that we may make a play for GWS pick 7 and Nick Haynes.

Nick Haynes? He's. 31 and what would be for us ? Third tall behind/ in front of disco and thommo can't see why unless he's free

Wy did they give away 14,27,35 for 11 … must be working on a trade offer?

Must be. Interesting to see how it plays out. Personally I'd prefer the picks we have done well in the mid to late second round with bowey, rivers, petty, sparrow recently

He will come with pick 7 from GWS

Interested now?

Will he actually though? Haven't heard any noise about this.

He is more than free, if he gets us 7 for a GWS salary dump.

If we got him, I could see us floating Tomlinson to North, who have lost McKay.

It’s been discussed numerous times. It’s essentially a replica of the Bowes trade.
Who the hell would pay Haynes $1.2mil if it didn’t come with perks?
GWS needs to get him off their books.

I don’t get when people say pick 5 becomes 6 & pick 11 becomes pick 12 who will be available?

To me pick 5 is still pick 5 because we don’t have access to other teams academy selections or father sons, so we should know who will / should be available come our selections. Pick 5 of available players….

I presume this is an attempt at sarcasm. If not, it's one of the worst takes I've read on this site in a long time.

It’s already 6 and 11 due to McKay compo.

It might be 7/8 and 12/13/14 due to academy or father sons and you’re right to say that’s not often relevant.

I think there’s some small relevance to it because it reflects where the pick is in the overall draft.

Its been discussed numerous times by hopeful fans wanting a free early 1st round pick.

I haven't heard any genuine media speculation that suggests GWS are actually willing to put up 7 with Haynes.

Is there anyone still saying GWS have to do it?

By all reports the Suns cap was stuffed and they couldn’t afford to keep all their players. They had to trade Bowes.

GWS aren’t bringing anyone of note in and have seemingly carried Haynes and other big deals for years now. What’s one more year? They might only offer Haynes and 500k for a 2nd rather than paying a big pick. If he really was available with a top 10 pick for a fire sale I’d imagine North or some other bad side would’ve done it by now.

Actually GWS don't need to get rid of him, as they have said, but imo would be very happy to.

You’re right. Their need isn’t dire but it’s certainly present. They have a lot of players they need to re-sign. $1.2mil for an average 31 year old is not gonna help them do that.

That we know of. If they can keep a lid on it they try to control the state of play. If it got out, then nobody touches it without pick 6 on the table.

I think I recall hearing that they would be open to covering part of his salary already. So I think this is one which will become more interesting as we approach the deadline and GWS position becomes a little clearer.

Curious - what happens if the trade period ends and GWS have overextended?

Bowes went to market last year for pick 6 or whatever it is.

The Haynes mail has always been that he’s available for no draft cost with GWS paying down his wage.

I’ve never seen anything linking Haynes to GWS’ first.

If they’re over the cap they’d be in big trouble. But their cap was fine this year (that we know of), no reason it shouldn’t be fine next year.

Neither have I but I was just saying if I was In their shoes, I wouldn’t advertise the state of the cap as GCS did. The precedent of a salary dump is now there.

Nobody needs Haynes at that figure. Hell, not many clubs would go near him for even 500K pa. Can GWS cover 750K+?I’m guessing probably not, so their real position will become clearer the closer we get to Wed. If it’s not dire as they intimate, then he probably stays. If no picks are involved clubs would expect GWS to cover 900K minimum.

Nick Haynes could sit the year out, he's the plus one. You pay the million to get Pick 7. Add that to what we have and we could really do some damage draft-wise.

Anyone see Clarries latest post. Is there something cryptic in the comment to JUH? It’s kind of odd. I can’t post the screen shot, as it says file is too large

They're from the same management group.

with the reports that we only intend to use two 'live' picks in this draft i think that fairly neatly summarises why we're happy to trade out of excess picks

think of it as 11 for 14, with the extra picks given away as they're worthless...to us

You would hope it's being used for something though...would hate to miss out on a player that 'pops' up because we no longer have the draft capital

The Haynes thing makes sense to me although I'm confused there's no media noise around it.

Given the cash we've freed up, surely it goes to Haynes for one year and then we have some big money to throw at Ben King, JUH or Logan McDonald as they're all coming out of contract at the end of 2024.

It gives us GWS first pick which would increase our chances of getting Reid or at least moving up to the top three of the draft?

Genuinely hoping this happens now. Haynes is a super smart defender and the perfect hybrid. Would be a great fit imo.

I just found a very reliable source (cannot name) we are going for pick 1 to get Reid. I was not told what we are giving, just that we’re trying for pick 1.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
