Riley Beveridge reporting on SEN Crunch Time that the AFL are going to recommend an assistance package to North Melbourne of:

- End of first round pick in 2023

- End of first round pick in 2024

- End of second round pick in 2024

- No priority access to Riley Sanders

** Pick 3 compensation for McKay is a separate issue. Will “likely happen” but won’t have anything to do with assistance package.

Seems fair

A fair outcome imo - North have a great young core and one of the best coaches of all time, anything more would have been overkill

I like the fact that they won’t compromise the first round. With Ben McKay for pick 3 type scenarios occurring, I think that’s right. That’s already a big enough leg up.

The AFL also gave North the right to an additional two rookies on the list - a measure aimed at allowing the club to keep younger players while bringing in more mature talent.

Sources familiar with the AFL’s draft assistance package for the Kangaroos said the future picks had to be used in trades this year or they would cease to exist.  North Melbourne have not had the problem of key players leaving the club.

Confused!!!! Why end of first round pick in 2024 and end of second round 2024????
That’s draft help over 3 years !!!! 2022. 2023. 2024. They got picks as assistance last year ‘ 22 which they used it to get Logue and Tucker.

Agree with end of first round 2023. Okay. But not 2024

I’d also given them priority access to two players from state leagues.  Like Suns got and they picked up Josh Corbett and Chris Burgess.  It’s a help but not a huge gift.

The first round is already compromised with Suns academy players...

I know a lot don't rate him, but i'd be going for Chol, i don't mind what he brings in the ruck and i think he'll offer more as a forward than Tmac and Brown are capable of at this stage.

if we could somehow work that pick 4 into the deal by including points and future picks that'd be the dream outcome, but unless we offer overs that's going to the Doggies or North

Chol offers a unique skillset: crumbing forward/second ruck!

No worries. Why don’t they just let North pick whoever they want and then the other clubs can fight over the leftovers.

North’s young midfield stock is probably the best this century behind GWS a few years back. They need no further assistance, just time for their kids to develop.

This is hyperbole. No-one knows that. Sheezel looks a star, LDU is establishing himself but unknown how good the others will become. People go ape droppings over high draft picks but odds are pretty strong that a few won’t be as good as initially thought.

Sheezel, LDU are proven. Simpkin’s very good. Wardlaw’s proven to have great talent. Tarryn Thomas is a freakish talent and they don’t deserve to benefit if they can’t turn him around. If they can’t make a good midfield out of those 5 they’re not going to do it with more talent.

And thats already allowing for Phillips and Powell not being much chop so far but both are at least useful and could be trade assets if they wanted to get more picks in.

It’s crazy to give them future picks when they have the ability to trade future picks right now.

There’s no reason to give them more talent and allow them bonus picks to trade. Especially in to future years. Give them what they got last year to bring in Logue and tell them to trade extra picks if they need to.

2 end of first rounders means around 2 picks in the 20 - 24 range after academy picks and North finishing a bit higher on the ladder. They are okay picks but nothing special. End of second rounder will be around pick 40 which is nothing really.

I think they’ve got it about right with North. You can’t go helping GC the way they have and then leave the Vic club getting a lesser deal.

They’ll have the nucleus of side that can challenge for top 8 within 3 seasons. After that it’s up to them. Like everyone else, they will still have gaps and weaknesses on their list that they will have to navigate and overcome. To assume they’ll have a flag three-peat because they’ve got a raft of good young talent and a top coach is a bit over the top.

The Suns help was way over the top but it was justified as they were pretty much starting again from scratch as was not reigning in their academy by now.

It’s a huge slap in the face for clubs like St Kilda, Freo, Essendon who haven’t won stuff all in years that North are getting spoon fed an easy path back to finals. Doesn’t guarantee more than that but they now have an easy way to build a consistently finals side.

And these picks will help them for a decade, that’s the problem. Any help for bad teams should be based on helping them go from awful to just ok. North have barely tried to do that, they’re still stripping away veterans and not making aggressive moves for mature talent. Where’s the Vince or Tyson trades to actually get better now not in 3 years time?

Also doesn't make any economic sense to give North a leg up. They're a low drawing financially unsuccessful club with one of the weakest balance sheets in the competition. (Take out their leasehold improvement value on Arden Street and they would be in deep trouble. Want to buy some change rooms and a gym.)

Initially I thought they were going to get 3, 11 and Sanders.

Then I thought they were going to get 3 and 11.

So I think this is a pretty good result for us, all things equal.

We can draft Sanders if we want (if he's not gone already), and that pick 11 won't come before our natural first rounder.

That’s the danger of floating around mid ladder for too long and not making hard calls on your list.

Yes but that’s what North did for a decade and when they made hard calls they made too many and didn’t pay up picks or cap space to bring in any help. it was clear they cut too deep.

One of the best arguments for North getting priority picks is the draft being messed by other sides, but you can’t give North too many or you’ll just pay that pain forward to other sides

LDU is already close to brownlow material if he can stay on the park. Simpkin is very good. Taryn Thomas is a hell of a talent and impacts games. Sheezel just won the rising star and is already at the point of being tagged some weeks. Wardlaws already shown he’s capable at worst, and future AA if he continues rapidly building his body up. That’s 5 potential AA level mids under the age of 25, with three of them already impacting games at a high level.

Adding Reid or Curtin and Duursma to that is madness. They’d have more top 10 mids on their list that we have mids full stop.

They need time and mature players around them. More star youth won’t change anything in the short term.
