I think Lever is probably too settled in our structure but considering his limitations as an actual defender, he inflicts no damage as an offensive weapon either. Very prone to brain fades too.

I think he gets a very cushy ride

Right, okay, thanks for that.

Happy to agree to disagree.

Noughton's a hard worker and leads well but his accuracy is questionable the last few seasons.

Good discussion. Whateley has a very sound footy mind.

If we do go down this path then Tom Lynch is a yes for me. Of all the suggestions it just makes sense given our unique draft hand and Richmond’s need to regenerate their list. We would also be able to keep pick 5 in a Lynch deal. He’s not costing more than a mid to late first round pick.

Harry McKay is a no. The Blues would absolutely demand our two first rounders (5 & 13) straight off the bat. If it was Charlie Curnow sure you’d do it but not for Harry. He’s just too shaky in front of goal. Not at that price.

I also like what Gerard said about Mabior Chol. “Melbourne already have a few of that type of mediocre forward. That’s not what they need. They need a game changer.”

Will be so interesting to see what we do. They even mentioned shaking Jeremy Cameron out of the final three years of his deal at the Cats. That was really left-field but I do hope our FD is having these serious discussions. Whately is correct in his assessment that we’ve probably got two more seasons, two more cracks at winning another flag.

Petty & JVR as your twin pillars. It’s a concern. I’m just not sure that’s going to be good enough.

It's good enough, but my key concern is Petty's body as a forward can it hold up?

We need a Key Forward now, Oscar Allen is just the ideal candidate 24 y.o just entering his prime for a 5 year premiership onslaught.

Surely he came to the 2021 Grand Final and thought I'd love to play in a team like this.

Send Gawn, Goodwin, Chocco, Richardson and Perty over to WA to reiterate he is the missing piece.

Sell him the dream of 90k plus crowds during finals, Marquee games v Filth and Tiges, marking bombs into our forward line from our "elite" midfield and creating a once in a lifetime dynamic forward line trio of JVR, Petty and Allen.

We have the draft pick arsenal.

Did you miss the sentence that said “I’m not saying this is the scenario……

I’m with you. We need to be bold. There is one condition and it’s the game plan. I highly doubt we will see much change in the plan and atm Lever is intrinsic to it.

We are stacked up on inside mids though. You couldn’t trade Viney - he is hear and soul. Brayshaw, like it or not is now a liability and will not likely get much on the trade table. Sparrow is a 2nd rounder at best. JJ and Harmes are gone. Which leaves Oliver and Trac. I fell dirty even considering it but either of them will get you 2 top 10 picks or close.

If North came knocking would you consider Pick 2 and McKay compensation (Pick 3) for Oliver and Pick 15? The cost to North is essentially one pick as they are being gifted the compensation.

Let GCS keep pick 4 and bundle our 2nd and 3rd rounders for a F1 and give that to them for  their first round pick they’ll receive from the doggies(10) for pick 4 when they exchange trades.

Take 2,3,5 and 10 to the draft and take Reid or Curtain, McKercher, Watson and Caddy (and Brown F/S)

Now that would be something. We may not make top 4 or a PF for the next 2-3 years as they mature and we’ll lose May and Max along the way. But we’ll have the list required to keep pace and remain relevant for another decade.

Now, back to reality.

I’d trade Oliver for the right deal. The club would never do it, not sure any club would. There’s others I’d trade in a heartbeat though

I get it, it’s shocking and I get why it won’t happen and I’m fine with that. If we don’t nail this draft……

Have heard a rumour, probably not breaking given where our list is at compared to that of the other clubs that could take him. But he's keen to get to us if we can make it happen.

Which worries me slightly as I've changed my mind on nabbing him. I just can't see how we don't sell the farm to land him and shoot our future-self in the foot whilst doing so.

Plenty has been said about trading and deficiencies in our existing players. Every player has strengths and weaknesses and I wouldn't trade them just on that basis. Barrassi always said that each season you have to find at least 5 % improvement in yourself just to stay at the same level. Trading out isn't solving the problem in some instances it is bringing in an unknown problem. Remember that quote about known unknowns etc.

As I see it we have lots of contested beasts who aren't really good kicks. Hawthorn stacked their premiership teams with left footers down back who could lower their eyes or kick long to position. We are deficient in that area. Buddy was never very good over head so they didn't bomb it to him but kicked it out in front or to space. We don't do that or when we do we look a million dollars. May is a great kick out of defence as is Bowey, Salem used to be. Lever isn't a great kick but is a superb interceptor. I hope Turner comes on as he looks like a great kick. The sort of player who would lift us is Kelly at GWS that is the prototype player we need to get.

If we cannot trade for no 1 get 3 first round kids in and develop them. Don't forget this year Roo, McVee, Laurie & Woewodin all played their first game and Chandler was like a first year player

What position does he play?

Nor should they

That’d make Grundy worth 10 top 10s

The dude is perennially injured. Glad we're not in the mix of clubs needing a big backman.

He’s the one we missed and I still don’t get why else didn’t go hard but it also makes me wonder why.. there’s something brewing that’s for sure but damned If I can find out this recruitment team are extremely tight lipped right now, perhaps we didn’t envisage the cap space and Grundy going but mud suspicion is if he’s not signed 4-6wks later than he was. We’d of come hard!

Great news 4 us.. laughable he’s getting that money w/o injury concern, NOW it’s beyond laughable if he does.

Fact we showed NO interest tells me all I need to know, Lamb, Taylor and co if they don’t like you I rkn that’s a big sign for any club to be worried!

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
