Penfolds Wines

Featured Replies

I noticed in an email that Penfolds has joined MFC as a sponsor.

I tried to investigate the MFC to see what are the terms of this deal, and also whether their were benefits for MFC Members.

I could find NO mention of Penfolds on the MFC website. Perhaps I missed it. Couldn't find anything on Demonland, either.

So I tried googling MFC/Penfolds and found  MFC Members  can  get a significant discount by  using the promo code "MELBOURNE". ( about 18% on certain bundles).

Why has there been so little publicity for such a prominent and desirable sponsor?

Also ,didn't we have another wine company sponsor recently.? I presume this supersedes them.

Surely we should be delighted to have Penfolds on board, and do everything possible to nurture, and perhaps upgrade the association in the future.

I just checked again, and found that Penfolds ARE listed with the official partners.   So the above is not correct, but I still think a little more exposure would be advisable.

Good call Jack!!

Penfolds make a couple of decent plonks.

Remember when Penfolds sold out and the new owners pushed Bin 389 for $2 (circa 1980 IIRC)

There were rumours that it was being used in their up market cardboard casks

Those were the days

Gave up buying my annual 6 bottles of Grange when the price hit $50 a bottle

(I'm an NZ pinot person these days)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware. Will definitely partake in this promo.

Just need a good cheese sponsor to jump on board now. King Island dairy perhaps.

I like a nice ST Henri.

Maybe the deal wasn't promoted as it could be seen as advertising dunno

Would love it if they released a 2021 red referencing the premiership.  The quality of the previous sponsors release doesn't do it justice.

Gallo Dairyland up on the Tablelands make some excellent cheeses.

Club have just announced special members offer.

Great to have Penfolds on board.  Our members’ special deal is six Koonunga Hill Cab Sauvs at $100. Or 12 for $190.

(Dan Murphy does six for $85.80.) 🤐

Thought they might do a special on the Max’s. Could do a special label with the man himself on it….

Not bad cooking wine that Koonunga Hill.

Anyone ever tried Sayv wine preserver from Dan Murphy's? Always found it a bit weird putting extra chemicals in a bottle to make it last but I hear some people swear by it.

Yes. Nice night for a Pinot.

How long do you want a bottle to last?

Maybe just a week or two. Unless it's a beauty worth nursing for a month

39% off grange would be better

20% across the full Penfolds range would be nice.

FWIW Bleasdale make some very good value wine.

(I very much appreciate - and feel vicarious pride - when sponsors choose us, particularly known and respected brands. So, thank you, Penfolds. However...)

Is the $100/$190 'plus delivery', btw?

I've found this situation - same item available cheaper elsewhere (and/or not involving delivery) - with other sponsor products, too. I feel 'doing something for members' is just seen as an obligation of sponsorship, the advertising to the wider football-watching world being the main game.

Then I guess they rely on 'emotion' to move some product to members wanting to support them for their support. There's the possibility the member will then be a convert to that product, I guess (my one uptake in the emotion/conversion regard has been (lots of!) Haymes paint, getting a 5-10% discount (probably borne by the retailer...) despite not being convinced I've got a better product or, certainly, at less cost).

That response isn't likely to 'hold' for wine, though; a highly discretionary, short-life spend in a hugely supplied market. Insurance or cars, on the other hand, might get more permanent member attachment?

Mind you, sponsors potentially lose up to 17/18ths (soon 18/19ths?!) of the football-world market.

What's everyone else's thoughts?

End of my doctorate thesis.

I've just completed a $ per second analysis on our household consumption patterns - they'd have too be giving the wine preserver way for free.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
