More like 3/4 * $250-$300.  Usually, the longer the term the less money.

Freo offered Acres about $150-200k, grossly undervaluing him (to help get Jackson).  They upped it a little bit but he went to Carlton anyway:

"Acres is one of a number of Fremantle players who were offered below-par contracts to stay at the club, with the Blues pouncing on the chance to secure the 26-year-old on a three-year deal at around $350,000 per season".

Just can't see Rivers who is still only 21 and yet to cement himself in the best 22 getting the same as Acres.

I think as fans we tend to overestimate what players get paid especially those outside the top 5-10.

I thought the AFL minimum salary for senior list players was 300k +. As a premiership player with a solid future i reckon he'd look elsewhere at 250-300k.   Hope he stays. Maybe 350k more realistic if Acres went to Carlton for about the same.

Given that Freo first offer to Acres was in the range I mentioned there  doesn't seem to be a minimum.   Rivers would have got a bonus for winning the premiership but not sure how much that affects future contracts.  But who knows what his figure is and would we meet it?

As an aside, if every player earnt a minimum of $300k that would take up about 75% of the salary cap.  Doesn't leave much for the stars.

I love Rivers but he's a 12-18 ranked player. He'll get a decent offer but it won't be great. His reward is longevity in the game at a reasonable remuneration.

Not too sure about 12-18.  More 16-24

Probably not the right thread but this might be of interest to posters: https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/average-afl-player-salary-rises-to-over-400000/news-story/dfbef989ad02b5f36dcfe04f87d25316

For the average to be just over $400K a lot of players are earning much less, even allowing for rookies (if they are included) dragging down the average.

and

 https://www.afl.com.au/news/874936/million-dollar-dozen-stars-cash-in-player-pay-hits-new-high

Only about 25% of all players get over $500

Fraught exercise, @Lucifers Hero

Just so hard to know market value for players like Rivers, Sparrow, Spargo, etc.

They haven’t shown more than role player ability and consistency but that is valuable for winning flags.

We have such a good list right now, we will continue to lose good players for moderate contracts…

You could be right. His 2022 season was not stellar and he needs to be more damaging with his disposal.

There was much debate pre covid on how teams best allocated their salary cap. IIRC the suggestion was that your top 5 should take up around 50%. It was thought provoking

Agreed.  I usually don't indulge chat about player salaries but I could see the Rivers numbers could easily become a DL 'truth'

o I was aiming to bring a bit of realism into the figures for him and put in some in perspective of the overall AFL cap allocation.

You also have to add that not all players are on a fixed salary. Rivers more than likely as a only a second contract may well be on a low base with high match payments and bonuses. I would think only the top 10-15?? would have no match payments??

His cameos in the midfield if ground breaking he will get about $100,000 per year more by seasons end as a star.

He has enormous upside in the Yeo category if he succeeds . Tall quick big kick talented and team orientated don't underestimate him jumping into our top 10 if he gets enough time on the ball.

He will end up a better player in the midfield than Harmesy Sparrow ANB, that notnunderestimating the above 3 who are all deserved AFL players in their own right albeit at  different stages of their careers . All are great Clubman to boot.

I asked Trent Rivers about Kozzie at the season launch last Wednesday, he told me the whole team is working on him to stay.  He seemed pretty confident Kozzie would stay, he said he loves it at Melbourne.  Hopefully Trent was right!

If that's the case then Kozzie must have thoughts of leaving, and there is an element of truth in what Cornes is saying.

And no offence KDF, but the old "he loves it at Melbourne" was said countless times in respect of Jackson. The players aren't likely to say that player X is likely to leave.

A noble ambition, young padawan.

What would be a fair deal for Rivers as a 2nd level defender in one of the AFLs best or the best defences?

4 x 450k  ---1.8mil?

The only way Rivers gets that deal is with another club, no way will we be able to offer that.

His teamwork is great I iagree but he would have to improve his field kicking substantially to be top 10. Hes a great long kick but not kicking to position.

Yes Rivs disposal can improve and I'm tipping this will come with greater responsibility in the middle and on the ball.  One thing we can't disagree on really is his upside is limitless if given this opportunity.

For sure. Technically he kicks pretty well, there's just the other things like dealing with pressure and decision making that need to be improved in order to hit targets regularly. He's got a great base for improvement.

Will be interesting to see the pressure Jackson comes under this year. Personally I fell he has put himself right under the pump in a two team town that lives and breathes football.

Kozzie might just well see that and say 'no thanks I don't need that pressure. Perhaps I'll win 3 or 4 more flags at the Dees and then head back for bigger coin in a few years time"

Let's hope Jackson cops a ridiculous amount of pressure.

There's a new diversion in the out of contract young stars saga...

The Swans always play their cards close to their chest when it comes to AFL trades, and insiders rarely agree to speak publicly about contracts and offers. But well-placed sources suggest Sydney are willing to offer De Koning a monster, eight-year contract to lure him north. We contacted the Swans with questions about their interest in De Koning; they did not respond by the time of publication.
