Death Riding Fremantle 2023 - Feathered Cap Edition

The wrist slashing is in full swing on the Freo bigfooty board. There's some anger but in general they seem to have passed through the first 4 stages of grief and have accepted their lot. Their season is terminal, and they know it. I almost feel sorry for them.

Make of that what you will.

Great viewing today!

That's a tough draw.

The teams Melbourne plays twice are Sydney, Brisbane, Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn & North Melbourne, and we finished one position above them in 2022! Looks like they're suffering this year from what we received by way of a draw last year. The 2 'weak' teams we were allocated were Fremantle (11th in 2021, 6th in 2022) & Collingwood (17th in 2021, 3rd in 2022).

Geelong were worthy Premiers last year but no-one in the media mentioned how they lucked on to an incredibly soft draw. They got to play North & West Coast twice so were gifted 4 games. That on top of the continuing unfair situation where they play Melbourne once every year but it's always at Kardinia Park (naturally unchanged for 2023).

Freo sitting 1-3 (lucky win after injuries plagued WCE) and have this the next few weeks:

GCS (in Adelaide)
Dogs (Home)
Brisbane (away)
Hawthorn (Home)
Sydney (away)
Geelong (home)
Melbourne (away)

If they are better than 3-8 I'd be surprised. Could be as bad as 2-9 is the Sun's get them this week in Adelaide.

I could be wrong but I think you're selling them a bit short. I reckon they're likely to win 3 of the next 4 (losing to Brisbane) and then lose the 3 after that. So maybe 4-7. But I'd definitely accept 2-9 or 3-8.

Okay, I'm being purely sadistic here but how about we aim to use our 2023 draft picks to take the best tall defender (Curtin, from Claremont) and best ruck (Edwards, Peel, and Freo Academy) just so we can watch Freo supporters implode?

Handily, they're probably the two most suitable first round picks for us, anyway.

I mean, recruiters always debate 'best available' vs 'needs', but I don't think there's enough consideration of merciless trolling as a draft strategy.

I'm very impressed. Making draft selections 4 games into the Season 😀

Our 2023 draft picks based on last year's finishing positions are:

Melbourne 13, 14, 32, 33, 88

I'd be ecstatic if that turned into 1, 18, 19, 38 & ? On Fremantle's revealed form those picks 13 & 32 are going to be a lot higher. I hadn't quite appreciated how easy a draw Fremantle had early. I assume that as they finished 6th their remaining draw is pretty tough. Which 6 teams do they play twice?

Hawthorn, Brisbane and Sydney I think

I remember when Sam Newman hosted Street Talk and Freo were just starting of and he asked one bloke what would the Avatar be for Freo and the bloke looked and him, thought for a moment and uttered....... The SHHEEEIT fish!! Not only was Sam doubled over in laughter, I was in Hysterics. Glad to say the way they are playing they are certainly living up to the nickname!😁

The only way we will get pick #1 is if Freo finish last. That is highly unlikely.

Not highly unlikely. Definitely possible. They play Hawks twice. On current form, the Hawks win those games

I said pre season on this forum Freo won't make the 8. I was expecting around 10th - 12th. Very possible they may finish a little lower, hence my highly unlikely comment, rather than impossible.  I have never wanted to be wrong more in my life! Crash and burn you b%*!@$d's

What They are Saying at Freo - Round 4:

I haven't include Jackson comments as there is little point 'death riding' him.  And excluded those quoted by earlier posters.  There is a lot of repetition so here are typical comments:

Bigfooty:

  • We will be lucky to win 5 games.
  • 27 years and I am seriously just about done with this club. I honestly am.
    • you'll be back haha
  • And I’m ready to call it. JLo’s time is up, the players are lost.
  • The drums need to be pounding for JLO. This can‘t go on, and Bell needs to be held accountable.
  • It's amazing how every single one of our players have regressed this year.
  • Pffft, I've got no more vents left
  • And we have ****ed our draft hand this year on a ******* unicorn
    • Unicorns aren't real 😭
  • Pearce is a disgrace, lucky to keep his spot let alone lead the team.
  • Team selection is rubbish…Plan is rubbish…List management is rubbish…Just generally rubbish. Coach, players with a few exceptions all playing like they are on heroin.
  • We didn't actually do anything last year, our players clearly drank their own bath water over the off season
  • Our off-season is starting to look like a club killer.  Got rid of players we need, sold the farm for one we don't and left ourselves with 2 empty drafts
  • Peter Bell is a club killer. Refusing to budge on Acres when it would've cost us so little in the scheme of things, not signing Logue early on. So smug with everything he does it pisses me off.
  • All the other teams do this weird thing where they have space in their forward line and they kick the ball in front of someone who is actually moving so they can mark it on the lead. Can't relate....
  • Ironically today i got an AFL easter egg with the cutout ladder you can build on the side of the box? May as well put freo straight on the bottom...Just for those following who will get Harley Reid. While hawks are firm favourites, so are Melbourne....who have the Dockers’ future first-round pick and the Dockers’ future second-round pick because of jackson.  Sold farm. We're ******. Kill me now. If that eventuates, there's no coming back.

In addition to the 'deeestruction' 🙂 of their list Freo have kicked a second own goal:  Leadership team.

Brayshaw was quite vocal about wanting to be captain.  Captaincy went to Pearce.  Does anyone know who he is?  Brayshaw is a shadow of his 2022 self; peeved at being overlooked, perhaps?  O'Meara is traded in and goes straight into the Leadership team.  Other noses out of joint, perhaps?  Mundy wanted to stay but he was moved on.  Bitter taste with the players?

They are rudderless on field with seemingly unhappy campers out there.

Add the loss of valued teammates to make room for Jackson and his mega $$$$ it is easy to see the green envy 🤢 monster kick in.

They need an attitude change, fast.  But alas I feel it is already too late to redeem this season.  Their chance to bank a few wins is all but gone.

I'll be surprised if they win more than 5 games out of their next 16, on current form and even if they improve. They can't kick goals.

These next 16 games will be against mostly top 4 contenders or teams that will be playing finals this year.

With all their list changes there hasn't been much club-to-player loyalty so one wonders how that and their lackluster performance this year affects player-to-club loyalty.

They are lucky they signed Brayshaw to 2025 and Serong and Hayden to 2027.

As Pearce is just 27, I don't see much chance of Brayshaw being captain in the foreseeable future.  Also there was an article saying when he signed his last contract it was for less than he would have a year or two later.  There is every chance Serong and Young are getting very good $$$ as they re-signed last year.  Unless Freo upped Andy's $$ last year he has a few reasons to be unhappy.

Andy will be a Free Agent in 2025.  Its time for mfc to go to work on him and get him to join Gus:cool: We can build our next gen midfield around Andy!

Wowee. I love this one. Almost funnier than Dylan Stephens lying on top of Ollie Florent in celebration and then rolling off him immediately when he realised failure to make the distance from 45m.

I posted after the trade went through about all the potential risks of trading in a super high priced player at this point in their chase for a flag.

Particularly a player who is still 3-4 seasons away from his peak or in the short term even has even yet to master a specific role (eg nick daicos or Horne Francis)

The rik of player discontent was high on that list of risks. And the vibe is, as you suggest luci, not real for freo on that front.

One thing I didn't include as a risk, is the potential impact of potential discontent on how hard they train over the preseason.

Hard to go the extra mile, pardon the pun, when you are jacked off.

I'm not sure of course how well they trained - but to my eye they don't look nearly fit enough. They simply could not go with the crows, who look to have had a brilliant off season under Burgess.

If true, freo are toast this season.

There is no chance in season to get to elite fitness - at least not a whole team. And with the best teams keeping the ball in motion more often, freo will literally not be able to keep up.

Compare them to the dees. We seem to be super connected and by all accounts trained luke demons on tbe preseason.

And were super committed. For example the voluntary weekend running sessions the dees apparently did.

Or the work the WA young fellas did on their Xmas break to come back in optimal shape (two of those boys, van ruin and jmac are in the 22).

I was thinking at quarter time last night, surely the Suns can play four quarters these days or even a half or maybe three quarters? But no...

When the Suns were on, St Kilda couldn't move the ball and no King or Membrey meant they couldn't dump kick it either. The Suns young ruckman was killing Marshall too. But after quarter time, they failed to win ground ball, 1v1s or set up behind the ball.

I reckon they may as well put the Suns in the bin. A terrible football club.
