I would be furious if I was a Freo supporter, the trade is going to end up being.
13, 4 & 23 (4061 points)

for Jackson, 44 & 67 (431 points)

Valuing Jackson alone at 3630 points
That’s equivalent to p1 and 30… or two top 10 picks 5/6.
I would say this would have to go down as the worst trade of all time giving up more than pick 1.

But but but Peter Bell is the master negotiator

Watched most of the game last night. To my surprised I thought Freo were the better team and should have won only for a poor start. Still with a a very tough run in I can only see them beating the Hawks and Eagles.
If the Suns can get a win today I’d say we can lock in pick 4.

It’s probably fair value. Jackson is a gun.

How could you justify spending more than pick 1 on any player who is out of contract?

Because of Jackson being out of contract, Freo looked to get him for unders. Now their form has dipped - we will get fair value. On an open market Jackson is worth pick 1

It's this sort of uncertainty around what will happen with compensation picks/priority picks/bid matching inside the top 10 which makes me lean toward trading up for pick 1.  All picks below pick 2 look like they'll be diluted.  Only one way to avoid all of that - trade to the top.

Yep.

Project get Reid.

We would have some forward line in five years, with JVR, who will he be a best by then, Jefferson hitting his straps and Reid on the rise.

The Eagles need to inject  mutiple first round picks to jump start their development.

And even if the talk about Reid telling the Eagles he doesn't want to play there is bollocks  there's always the risk of a country boy wanting to come back home to Victoria.

As I posted in the Reid thread, we can rest easy that if Taylor rates Reid as worth it then the hype is real. He has a tremendous record with players like Reid.

He is, but he isn’t what Freo needed. They already have a gun ruckman. They overpaid because they thought he’d be a KPF who rucks. IMO he isn’t and will never be that.

He’s a big midfielder and ruckman. That’s what he is. He’s wasted not being the main ruck. If Darcy leaves then it becomes a different proposition, but they traded not only a huge number of picks for him, but also some really key players in order to fit him into their cap. They went from a top 6 finish to a likely bottom 4 finish in the process.

By all measures, this trade has been a disaster for them. With pick 4 this year they could go after a quality mid which they desperately need. Fyfe is finished and they haven’t been able to replace him.

I don't think Freo ever expected to be down in 15th spot, would pick 19 and 38 have been a good swap if they had finished where they expected to this year. They really expected to win the flag this year.

If that’s what they expected, then they severely overrated their list. They were nowhere near a flag last year. They were building nicely, but their list had some serious holes. One of those holes was not a ruckman however. Darcy is a top 5 ruck in the competition. It’s like if we paid what they paid to get Grundy while we also had Gawn. Madness.

They also got rid of some really key players in the process of getting Jackson, which hurt them enormously.

The joke is that Lobb produced far more up forward for them than Jackson probably ever will. Logue was also a really important part of their defense, which isn’t all that great, when you consider their game plan is built around defensive pressure.

Jackson moved at the best time for us. I think teams thought the 2 ruck approach could work because Gawn and Jackson tag teamed reasonably well n 21 and 22. If Jackson had stuck around we’d be seeing the same problem now we have with BG.

time will tell but I think history will show we got the better deal. And from freo’s perspective it would be a disaster if Darcy left because he wants to full time ruck

If Jackson entered this years draft he wouldn’t go at 1.

Suns letting us down against GWS.

We need GCS pick to stay low, so we can trade for it, as they only need points for academy selections. And we need GWS to stay out of the Harley Reid stakes, as they also have Tigers 1st. Go Giants

We want it much higher than 4. I think 9 would be the sweet spot so we have a good chance of getting it.

I agree entirely. I see this as a 2-step process. We trade up for GCS' pick (which I'm estimating at 6) because they'll definitely be trading that out for points, and then possibly try and package 4 and 6 to get higher. I'd have no problem if we kept 4 & 6 although ofcourseeven those picks will be diluted with Walter likely to go at 2.

It's really easy to say this in retrospect. Did anyone have Freo missing the 8 this year? Freo may have overrated their list but they weren't alone. I think the general view was they were a big chance of Top 4. There was also a widespread view that Melbourne were being dudded because Freo's 1st round pick was so low in 2022 and that was all they could offer. Jacko was a Pick 3 after all.

Good idea because all our number ones have been terrific success stories.

Done early @GCDee. Let's revisit in 10 years.

Okay.

I think I want Reid now. I think it could be one of the biggest stories going into next year if we were able to pull it off.

He is generational.

I mean, part of me is still torn as I really love Duursma and have made that known. He has the potential to be anything.

But Reid could almost have as big an impact off the field for our club as on. One of those players who is so marketable, has had one of the most dominant under 18's years we've ever seen. He would help with memberships, game attendance, new generation of young supporters.

It's a tantalising thought. You just wonder what we'd be giving up for it.

But to have him and Trac playing a tandem deep forward/mid role with Oliver and Viney in there is just absurd.

The more there's talk of it, the more I can't help but think.

Has his under 18 form been that dominant. I thought he has come back to the pack in 2023. Serious question?

Absolutely.  We were able to extract Freo's 2nd rounder for this exact reason.  They begrudgingly relented to our demand and gave us the pick because all parties believed Freo would be much higher on the ladder and that 2 picks in the teens would not have been a fair price for Jacko.

They bet on improving (or at worst holding steady) and now we're getting better than expected value. A win for us, but how big won't be known for a while yet.
