Find it more sad that a church will hound people for the way they were born, but each to their own I guess...

The man has a right to his beliefs even as abhorrent they are to many of us.

It comes back to the lack of due diligence for a cultural fit to today's AFL and general Australian environment.  Someone messed up.

Sure, but making those beliefs as public as he has will impact his suitability to lead organisations that put such a high premium on inclusiveness.

Agree that there was a lack of due diligence there, although - wasn't he one of the people overseeing the review? Seems a bit like he might have put himself forward.

Bit of a different context being a Catholic, Muslim, whatever, in your personal life to being the chair of a church that says history will judge abortions like concentration camps.

In a way I think that is sad that someone could be hounded out of a job for their beliefs and the church they belong to.

Someone at Ess ad the AFL didn't do enough due diligence on the cultural fit.  Just shows some clubs just don't get the importance of being an inclusive club, not just in word but also in deed.

I wish the world had more people with your decency and compassion Luci.

This seemingly answers the question of if his personal beliefs would have influenced his decisions as Essendon CEO:

Can't have been that thorough a reference check.  Should have checked Thorburn's preference 'club vs church' before giving him the job.

Now looks like deflecting the blame.

Ess are still a mess.

Corporate execs don’t go to jail. They get new equally highly paid jobs at a new corporate entity. Morals and ethics are words only when it comes to chasing the dollar for people like him. The fact he belongs to a right wing church is of no surprise.

I actually think you can park religious beliefs and work with all types, as much as I loathe the sentiments his church expresses, he is not a numpty his role with NAB suggests that.  He was also pretty comfortable with the hypocrisy of being a banker and a Christian - Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate one and love the other...you cannot serve God and money".

For someone who considers himself as an astute media performer, Barham is making a complete hash of it.

The coach sacking, insisting on an experienced coach, Sheedy's obsession with Hird and now a CEO that lasts one day.

The whole board has to go.

Not sure what you are getting at? It is clear that not all 'Churches' serve God. My point was A) he is obviously morally flexible having been a CEO of a Big four bank, B) On so many levels being a banker (as demonstrated by numerous scandals, fees for no service, money laundering, wage theft, etc) is inimical to being a 'Good' Christian. Thus he was perfectly suited to Essendon (was always going to be a lightening rod though).

And by the way not describing myself as a good anything, especially Christian, but I aspire to do better. I also 100% respect belief and the right to have beliefs, but draw the line big time at pushing any agenda that limits someone/anyone's' right to a fair go.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
