I dunno Gonz. I have been really frustrated with our supporters this year, either being too quite, or worse - not showing up at all, but last night I really felt like we didn’t have much to cheer about.

Our game plan, at the G particularly, doesn’t have as much dynamic burst as the slingshot style played against our high press. Instead we win a stoppage, long down the line, punched over the boundary, go again. It’s painfully predictable (by design). I’d say last night there was almost 60,000 Melbourne supporters there. We showed up, but didn’t get much to cheer about aside from a burst in the 2nd and 3rd.

To me this is the key to getting the crowd roaring be it a large or small crowd.

When Hunt, Langford, Rivers, Harmes take a run down the wing, get a handball chain going or Kozzie chases/gets a player or the ball then every time one of them goes near the ball the crowd roars in anticipation.  That anticipation gathers a life of its own and the crowd roars at less exciting things so the noise becomes fairly constant.  Those little moments to excite were few and far between last night.   It was a dour game and the crowd responded accordingly.

I just see it differently - it seems most supporters are waiting for the team to do something they can react to. My view is supporters should be cheering and generating noise/atmosphere for the side (you know, supporting) regardless of what is happening on the field. Now obviously if the team is blown off the park the supporters will go quiet but when it is an arm wrestle all night I expect the supporters to pull their heads out of their arses and actually cheer the team. Maybe that's just me.

Hmm .... Can't see a huge crowd v Lions as being likely on the back of that performance. Low - mid 60s perhaps?

I have a sad horrible feeling that the level of passion and loud support we got over in the west from neutrals will never be beaten.  They showed us how to barrack.

We just haven’t got it in us to barrack the way other supporters do for their sides. We deserve all the ‘fair weather’ jokes etc that get levelled at us.  Sad but true.

Your first paragraph just about says it all.  I hope you will be proven wrong but am not confident.  Fair weather supporters is what we seem to be, even after a premiership

The noise for the two 2018 finals at the G was out of this world. We roared goals much much more loudly than last night.  No logical reason why the difference. 

It took Sydney fans a long time to get going.  Once they hit the lead they didn't stop but until then it was fairly quiet all round.

Maybe covid flattened spirits in more ways than we realise.

Maybe. Or maybe we're just a pretty dour team. (Played with a bit of flair and dare in 2018.) When we're losing,  our style is painful to watch, quite frankly. Hopelessly timid team selection hasn't helped. Same mediocre players, week after week. Nothing and nobody new to get excited about. And now it is too late.

Pies have a point to prove and are up and about. They also have 100k members. 

We got 80k against an interstate club of which had maybe 20k supporters there last night.

We played poorly and had something to cheer about for maybe 20 minutes total.

Turnover after turnover and Swans scoring on almost every single one.

Fumbles.

Missed sitters.

50 metre penalties.

Momentum killers that sap energy from the crowd. It's happened all season.

This isn't our fault.

There really needs to be some sort of vetting process in place for new threads being created. Surely. 
Regardless, If you’re gonna start a waste of space thread, at least check for glaring errors in the title.

Fair enough, was probably more in frustration of the way the game was going, the crowd just seemed really quiet for an 80k crowd 

One of the reasons Collingwood supporters are so loud is because they clearly don’t understand the rules.

Geeing up the crowd would have been painful. Almost like a WWE match that has deadspots and they have to bang the turnbuckle to get fan involvement. 

But worried about the crowd this week. Semis against interstate teams (excluding the Collingwood Giants 72K in 2018) haven’t drawn well over the last few years pre covid.

believe they have all been geelong games with 55, 52 and 44k there.

hoping for above 60 but not confident

Perhaps the club could consider free booze to attract the fans in. Will help loosen up the vocal chords as well

If there was a ladder for fan involvement this week where would we sit?

I went to the Geelong game on the weekend and they also didn’t cheer as loud as pies fans…  go to some non Melbourne games and you’ll see there isn’t much difference.::

You shouldn’t need to be inspired to cheer for YOUR team though. You know, the team we LOVE. 

It’s not easy to make a lot of noise when your team’s losing or playing poorly, but you just DO IT. We do it during every single match, for the ENTIRE match. This is by far and away the single hardest thing about being in the cheer squad. We could be 20 goals down with a minute left on the clock and still we’d barrack hard and loud. Do you know how hard it is to chant and cheer while sad, or even crying? It’s extremely hard. But we do it for the boys. I don’t see why others can’t follow suit.

Yes Geelong fans are typically quiet as well - I went to the 2011 Prelim Feel v WCE and couldn't believe the lack of noise/support. I assumed though it was just complacency bred through success.

Doesn't excuse our own supporters lack of voice though.
