A magpie Neanderthal came down the aisle during the game and spewed forth a torrent of verbal abuse directly at one of our DA members: a 20yo sweet-natured girl who’s probably not even 5ft tall. And this guy was huge. He looked like a Collingwood supporter who’d swallowed another Collingwood supporter. Idk what his issue was but we just had to take it.
 

A couple of our guys stood and yelled at him in her defence but were quickly told by the rest of us to knock it off as it’s not worth it. Sure enough, he retreated when he realised he wasn’t getting a bite back. 

But in my three months with the DA I’ve not seen anything like this. And he wasn’t the only one, either. Throughout the match they’d come dragging their knuckles down the aisles on either side of our bay purely to mouth off, not at us in particular but clearly to stir us up while we we chanting etc. 
Vs other teams the oppo fans sit in the bays on either side and behind us and yes, they’re loud and obnoxious and they hurl abuse, but they don’t come down the aisles to do so. 
Last night was quite the experience. 😑

So how did we go last night Peter positive? Only 30k Dees turned up. Obviously 25k are negative like me. 
What don’t you understand about not going on a cold wet night for older Dees fans? It’s not negative it just plain common sense for those of us with failing bodies.

Sydney will have nearly as many. A lot of fans don't believe any longer.

Our supporters should be more confident and bullish about the team this year than back then.

I know. I stupidly assumed that winning a premiership and not being able to be there to experience it last year would've been motivation enough to turn up and support the boys in voice all season. On a lovely mild March evening only 58,002 bothered to come to watch us unveil our flag (and 15-20,000 would've been Dishlicker fans). That set the tone this season with our mild and meek supporter base not turning up, and not being loud enough. If there was ever a time for us to turn up in numbers and voice it was last night, to counter the mighty supporter base of the Pies. I want that 2018 elimination final atmosphere to come back.

I really don’t get how the members and supporters thingy works.  We have over 60k members and am totally guessing here, say an additional 30 to 40k supporters. In relative terms, bugger all turn up to games, even the big ones.

I know for a fact that a lot of members - definitely the category that have reserved seats / access to GF tickets (if we make it) - (that have also been fully sold out)- don’t go to many games because there have been many vacant seats in  those reserved areas in every one of our home games this year.

My presumption is that we must have a substantial number of ‘fair weather’ and perhaps somewhat affluent supporters that buy the higher level memberships  just in case we make the finals. Maybe that is the answer for your 2018 question. If that is the case, in my opinion that is a bit sad but so be it.  I also get why we get the ‘going to the snow’ jokes.  We seem to deserve it.

But back to what I cannot work out. If we have over 90k supporters (even allowing for elderly, Covid concerns, distance issues) why so few in relative terms turn up to big games such as against the ferals.

If the answer is they prefer to watch the games on tv, again, or just choose to attend if we make the finals, such is life.  I used to enjoy bagging our northern state neighbours about how bad their attendances were for their rugby games. That has sadly very much become a tv sport.  I’m going to back off doing that because I feel a bit hypocritical. 

I just feel for our players and I am again just guessing again, would appreciate some vocal support at our home games.  Must be disheartening to know that opposition supporters more often than not not only outnumber our supporters but are also more vocal. The real downside being that our team is disadvantaged in home games if that makes sense.
Just like for decades I wished we win a premiership, I now wish (actually have done so for many decades) the values and attitudes of our new supporters also change, dare I say it to resemble the raw passion that most other Victorian based seem to have.

Again in my opinion the MFC as in the board, coaches, players and staff have all stepped up, the only real remaining weak link is us, the supporters base. Apologies to all the die hard fans out there including the cheer squad and people that turn up week in and week out - be you a member or a ‘non financial’ supporter.  You guys are the heart and soul of the club.

Our supporters stay away because they’re largely older MCC members who don’t want to sit in the rain surrounded by rabid Collingwood ****bags when they can be at home with the faux fire on.

Oh dear.. 🤣

Looks like even our own players are envious of Collingwood supporters.

I can’t defend everyone else who wasn’t in-their seat but maybe there are a few members like me who took the gamble of buying a second membership with grand final guarantee access. I am also an MCC / MFC member and I find that a much better spot to watch from. I will put my hand up and say I didn’t go to the game unfortunately but for me the health and well-being of my partner is far more important than going to a game

I sit in AFL members, next time I'll scan in and walk around to the MFC reserved section to sit with Melbourne supporters instead of the Collingwood bogans in the outer.

It was a rough night and after reading these comments I'm not surprised. It's not a friendly rivalry and more often that not things are in a gutter. As soon as that siren went I ****bolted to the exit and to the bridge. 

We might have been shown up on the night but the one thing I'll say is never be ashamed to be an MFC fan, you're all heroes in my eyes.

I think this weeks crowd is going to be very interesting.

Carlton got 64K and against Geelong on a Saturday night but I can't help but feel we wont come close to that.

I think low 50s is accurate and that will be disappointing considering I thought it would be larger than the Pies game a few weeks ago.

Would be nice if more than 25K of us show up.

More turned up to Anzac Eve (away game ffs) than last week...

We have 60k plus members, plenty more supporters, last home game which is a BIG game for us.

I dream that we will outnumber the Carlton crew and give our boys the support they both want and need. Am I hopeful? No, not really…. but I still dream

I predicted 67-72 for the Pies game so am very happy with my work aha.

I think Saturday night also tends to be a terrible crowd drawing slot.

If this were a dry Saturday 2pm we would get 70K.

Based on ticket sales, I think this will be lucky to get above 55K and weather isn't looking great this weekend.

I am looking forward to another weekend sitting on 2A in the AFL reserve surrounded by clueless people from the other team.

In fairness to us that day, I reckon there were a maximum of 10K Carlton fans that day.

Never seen the crowd look so red. Carlton were also shocking at that point of the season.

It just seems to, I don't know whether its because people like to go out on Saturday nights or because late night footy isn't for most people.

I think if the Friday night game against the Pies was a day game it would have hit 80.

Our Saturday night games this year have been really poor as well.

I had this one penciled in for our largest home crowd of the season but that just seems unlikely.

I am also fed up with the excuses our supporters come up with to not show up to games. Where are the 45K who were at Round 1 and where are the 60K who turned up to the elimination final in 2018?

I spose you lose a lot of kids, oldies and country people with the night games. 

It's also amazing how much the weather seems to impact people going to the footy. 

And then there's covid - I had two mates that would've come on Sat but had covid. 

I actually reckon there might've been more than 60k dees at that elimination final. Which begs the question how many come out of the woodwork for finals.

50k would be a poor result. Carlton are playing an elimination final of sorts and we are playing for our spot in the 4! If all we can draw is 50k I'll be disappointed, the club should be hoping for at least 70k again.

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating (imho, anyways), what pi*sses me off no end is that these people who aren’t turning up for H&A matches for whatever reason, are oftentimes the selfsame people who will definitely attend a FINAL come hell or high water. 

All those problems that stymied them during the H&A season: fear of catching covid, night matches, rain, cold weather etc. are seemingly magicked away come September. Funny, that. 🤔

Not a bad idea what some have proposed here. Only sell finals tickets to members that go to at least, for the sake of arguments, 75% of the H&A.
